Gloria Romero's revolution - 05/01/06

California state senator Gloria Romero will be marching in solidarity with foreign citizens today and joining their boycott and show of force, saying (cbs2 . com/topstories/local_story_119204222.html): "The boycott is as American as apple pie... Many of us have decided to join in recognizing the call of immigrants for one day out of a year, one day out of American history, to simply say we matter." Despite her best efforts to cloud the matter, they aren't "immigrants", they're illegal aliens and their supporters. But she goes even further:

California State Senate supports foreign citizens marching in our streets - 04/27/06

In a shocking - but not surprising - move, the California State Senate has endorsed the May 1 illegal immigration boycott and march: SCR113. This isn't suprising considering that many California legislators frequently act more like their Mexican counterparts. It's only shocking that they would be so bold and that the resolution would be so utterly dishonest.

California's educational system in even worse shape than previously thought - 03/11/06

California's schools used to be at the top of the nation, now, according to one ranking, we're between Alabama and Mississippi. This is largely, if not exclusively, due to "liberalism" (think Jackie Goldberg) as well as ethnically-compromised politicians who support illegal immigration (think Antonio Villaraigosa). Via a comment from 'eh', Dan Walters offers "Dry statistical report portends immense tragedy in the making": ...Extrapolating from the two sets of data, the exit exam could push graduation rates for African American and Latino youngsters down to a third of those who begin the...

Jon Vessey, crops rotting in the fields, and pro-illegal immigration propaganda - 12/05/05

Jon Vessey is a California grower who's been quoted in a few recent articles about how crops will rot in the fields unless growers get more cheap labor to pick it. (UPDATE: see crops rotting in the fields). On 11/21, the WaPo featured him in "Shortage of Immigrant Workers Alarms Growers in West" (link), and today the Los Angeles Times features him in "Picking a Battle Over Shortage of Farmworkers" (link). And, he was apparently also featured saying similar things in Copley News Service and USA Today. And, the CSM article (link) I discussed in "America's produce industry is facing a crisis"...

California Border Patrol rally draws crowd, questionable editing - 10/30/05

Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murrieta held a rally in Sacramento yesterday in support of his proposed ballot measure to create a California Border Patrol. According to the AP, about 1000 people turned out, 700 on the other side. The protest was "mostly peaceful", and the "underlining issue" was the Minuteman Project. The same AP report is featured in these articles: washingtonpost . com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/29/AR2005102901498.html Calif. Border Police Plan Draws Throngs

Reuters on Gilchrist; Campbell is actually pro-illegal immigration; Hoffenblum changes tone - 10/02/05

The Reuters article "Border activist a wild card in Calif. election" discusses the race in California's 48th District. Said "wild card" is Minuteman Project co-founder Jim Gilchrist, who's facing off against "moderate Republican" and state Assemblywoman Marilyn Brewer and the front-runner, former Republican state Sen. John Campbell. The dynamics of this race were previously discussed here. As for the article itself, it says: Campbell won the endorsement of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and has also taken a strong stance against illegal immigration -- coming out against Bush's...

Berkeley to be renamed Ramseyville - 06/02/05

Parents, staff, and students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley, California recently voted to change the name of their school to... Sequoia Elementary School. The name change still needs to be approved by the school board:

California's future not fully 100% doom and gloom - 06/02/05

No, there is the fairly good possibility that things will not end in the complete meltdown of the state and it eventually physically separating itself from the mainland and being crushed by the Pacific, a new report reveals. According to the Public Policy Institute of California's new report "California 2025: It's Your Choice" (ppic.org/main/publication.asp?i=600), by that year we'll have 8 to 10 million more people living here, with a severly strained infrastructure to match:

Fox of Mexico to get tough with the U.S.A. - 10/18/04

More threats from our friends to the south: In recent days Mexican President Vicente Fox and his Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Luis Ernesto Derbez, have sent barbed messages to the U.S.A. The main message - Mexico plans to get tough with the U.S.A. regarding the treatment of migrant workers in this country and the services they should receive...

"Dan Walters: Schwarzenegger pleases neither side in fight over licenses" - 09/03/04

Arnold's actions in the driver's licenses for illegal aliens matter so far are not as good as they could be, but it's the end result that matters. Dan Walters thinks he won't please either side: NEW YORK - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger won boffo reviews for his prime-time Republican convention speech that extolled the virtues of fellow immigrants, but he returned to California on Thursday to veto a bill granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. Schwarzenegger has not been coy about his intention to veto the licensing bill, easily the most controversial of the hundreds of measures enacted...

"Feng Shui, non-citizen voting, and invasive plant species?" - 08/06/04

Carnac takes a long, disturbing look at the envelope and says: CA State Assemblyman Leland Yee. Yee is the guy who I had previously associated only with his call to Feng Shui Sacramento (link). I couldn't recall his name, only referring to him as "Feng Shui guy." However, he seems to deserve a bit more scrutiny.

"Bill Jones speaks out against voting rights for non-citizens" - 07/27/04

From Terence Chea of the AP (sfgate . com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/07/26/state1700EDT0097.DTL): Republican Senate candidate Bill Jones railed on Monday against a ballot measure that would grant non-citizens here the right to vote in school board elections, calling it a "slap in the face" to U.S. citizenship and the country's immigration laws.

"this recall is going nowhere" - 06/15/03

From this: Darrell Issa, a Republican congressman trying to become California's next governor by financing a recall campaign against Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, on Saturday suggested the GOP unite by nominating a single candidate to seek the governorship and by focusing on the state's $38.2 billion budget shortfall instead of rigid ideology... Before a recall election can be held, supporters must submit to the state nearly 900,000 valid signatures of voter support by September. Issa, whose $800,000 in contributions has fueled pro-recall group Rescue California, told the audience that more...

Gray Davis, running scared - 05/26/03

According to [1]: the Davis administration will announce that Steve Smith will leave his government post as secretary of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency to work on anti-recall activities. Smith is no ordinary bureaucrat chipping in for the cause. He is one of Davis' few longtime political allies -- a top adviser who played integral roles in the 1998 gubernatorial campaign and the 2002 re-election effort. He's one of the guys on those morning conference calls that include the governor, political adviser Garry South and pollster Paul Maslin.
