Mexico admits: most emigrants had work in Mexico

Allan Wall discusses this comment from a Vicente Fox spokesman:

In some cases it [emigration] has to do with real problems of poverty, and in others it answers to other types of personal interest. Statistics reveal that a very, very high number of the persons who emigrate to the United Status had work in Mexico. They don't emigrate to get a job, but they emigrate for another series of conditions also of a cultural character, because they hope for a better condition of life despite the fact that they had work here. They aren't going because they don't have work in Mexico.

Kinda shoots holes in the Sally Struthers-level arguments provided by supporters of illegal immigration, doesn't it? Especially those from various Catholic bishops.

Cesar Chavez pointed out how immigration was a tool to drive wages down. Chavez in 1979 testified before Congress about the problems with illegal immigration.

Chavez brother led the first minuteman project to protect our boarders. The biggest problem was the violence associated with Chavez enforcement of boarder control.

MLK talk to Chavez to stop the violence on the boarders. MLK successor Ralph Abernathy did a peace march with the Chavez group to stop illegal immigration.

I do not see how any American could support illegal immigration!

All true, Loma. Their government encourages them to leave for another reason too: they can then import even cheaper illegal labor from further south, which they are doing now. Mexico definitely wants to send their uphappy laborers north to be someone else's problem.

They're coming here because they want a big screen plasma TV and a new car. Many in the open border crowd make it into an issue of survival as though people are starving, that isn't the case.

Yes Lone, it does shoot down those type of arguments.

It also hints at a reason. People yearn to be free and they yearn to better themselves. in this case, many are voting with their feet. Things in Mexico are so bad with a narco-corrupt government, lack of freedom, pervasive corruptness, and diminished hope for improvements, that many just give up and go north.

Mexico gets about $50 billion a year sent back from illegal immigrant workers in the USA and this is second only to oil as their biggest source of money. Moreover, the 2-4 million illegal immigrant Mexicans entering the USA every year provides a safety valve allowing the Mexican government to ignore their people and the things they need. In a very real sense it props up a very bad government and delays help for Mexico's poor.

I can understand why the Mexican goverment wants these incredible levels of illegal immigration to continue. But for the love of God, why does President Bush support open border/mass amnesty policies to prop up a corrupt and repressive government in Mexico? How can he do this 4 1/2 years after 9/11 when he knows the border is open to terrorists? Inexplicable.
