Pepsi starts race-based Census push ("I Count" for Hispanics, but not open to illegal aliens)

There's a Pepsi tag because early in 2009 they tried to glom on to Obamamania, choosing political sides and unfortunately not apparently suffering a backlash. I likewise don't expect much of a backlash from their latest: an attempt at encouraging Hispanics - and not those of other races or ethnicities - to participate in the Census (site: pepsiyosumo.com, report: link):

"We felt the Hispanic consumer needs to go beyond simply being counted, and count," said Martha Bermudez, Pepsi's senior marketing manager, multicultural marketing. "Pepsi partnered with Eva Longoria Parker, who will direct and produce [the documentary]. We want to bring the stories to life in a creative and compelling film." ...Ms. Bermudez said Telemundo will also be broadcasting integrations to drive awareness of Pepsi "Yo Sumo" and the stories that are being collected...

However, Pepsi isn't completely "down". They don't want to be charged with any crimes, so a glance at their Rules shows:

4. Eligibility: Open only to individual legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 17 years of age or older at time of participation. Potential winner(s) may be required to provide proof of legal U.S. residency if requested by Sponsor to determine eligibility.

It might be interesting if a group of non-Hispanics applied and then sued Pepsi as part of a class action when none of them were selected.
