New Chunks for June 15, 2009: "I really should just twitter this" edition

Weren't you supposed to tell your friends about this site? I mean, the good parts of this site, not posts like this? In other news:

* Hiking earlier today, I saw a green figure out of the corner of my eye, directly to my right. At first I thought it was a dwarf or some other faerie sprite. Then, I looked at it and I realized it was just a bush.

* As I drove up to the store, I had a feeling that the better-dressed-than-me Jose Feliciano-looking guy begging outside with a cup and wearing dark glasses was not in fact blind. To test my hypothesis, I parked right next to a curb surrounding a small dirt area that contained a light pole. Then, getting out of the car, for training purposes, I balanced along the curb just as I would when walking along a rock ledge in the mountains. Then, in order to test my hypothesis, I intentionally walked right into a metal sign on the aforementioned light pole, gashing my head. As I suspected, that caused the beggar to smirk at what he perceived to be my misfortune which, of course, is something that I'd planned to do all along.

* John Cornyn's legal helper in his "opposition" to Sonia Sotomayor is Orin Kerr. See the comment here: volokh.com/posts/1245109423.shtml#602567 I suspect that Cornyn's "opposition" to SS is akin to his "opposition" to other things.

* This has less than 150 views. Don't people have any taste any more?

* To answer the last question, see the attached video. I don't know whether they're serious or not, but either way it's funny.

* Today's Cardiff Singer of the World-winning Russian Opera Singer Babe of the Day is Ekaterina Shcherbachenko (link).

* I think - through the power of deduction - I've discovered the source of recent car problems. There were no problems with cold starts, and few problems with starts after traveling even a short a distance along the freeway. However, after driving along just streets for a short distance after a cold start, it would sometimes refuse to start again (dashboard lights on, but no clicking, no turning whatsoever) until it got cold again. It wasn't the starter, battery, or battery connection. In fact, I believe it might be due to a heat sensor or similar causing the computer or some relay to prevent the engine from turning over.

* Isn't "yield to the person on your right" horrible advice? If Person A approaches from the West, and Person B approaches from the South, Person A will yield to Person B. But - at the same time - Person B will seek to yield to the person on their right, which would be the East position. There's no one there, so Person B would go around the circle, attempting to yield to the person from the North but then, finding no one there, eventually seeking to Yield to Person A. In other words, Person B would yield to Person A at the same time as Person A is yielding to Person B. Who, then, would go first? If you add a "no going around the circle to find the person to whom to yield" rule - as the DMV does not do - there could still be a problem if all four positions are filled. Each person would be yielding to the person to their right, and a similar situation would obtain. Edsger Dijkstra discussed this in the province of computer programming over four decades ago. Have we learned nothing?
