How the Reason Rupe poll misleads on immigration amnesty (Emily Elkins, Ed Morrissey)
Ed Morrissey of HotAir will grasp at any straw to support amnesty, and the latest is "Reason-Rupe poll shows majority approves path to citizenship, oppose targeted drone killings of Americans" [1] referring to a poll by Reason Magazine [2].
That poll obtains its result by misleading; here's the question that was asked with the results:
Which comes closest to your view about unauthorized immigrants who are currently living in the United States?
* They should be allowed to stay in the U.S. and eventually be allowed to apply for citizenship if they meet requirements.. .......... 55%
* They should be allowed to stay in the U.S., but not be allowed to apply for citizenship .......... 4%
* They should be allowed to stay in the U.S. temporarily as guest workers, and then be sent back to their home countries ............. 11%
* They should be deported back to their home countries ............................................................ 27%
* DK/Refused .......................................................... 3%
* Total ................................................................. 100%
First, it's misleading to use the term "unauthorized immigrants" since many people might not realize that those being referred to are more commonly called illegal immigrants or illegal aliens.
Second, that poll question misleads by omitting another popular option: attrition, aka "self deport". The "should be deported" question implies the U.S. will actively seek out and deport all illegal aliens in the U.S. That's completely different from attrition, under which illegal aliens would be encouraged to return home on their own.
Please write @EdMorrissey and @emilyekins ("Polling Director at Reason Foundation") and let them know you now know what they're doing.
