Tom Ammiano tries to block Secure Communities in California; will Kamala Harris help?
California state Assemblyman Tom Ammiano [1] has introduced a bill [2] that seeks to hamper the Department of Homeland Security's Secure Communities program in California. That program is Janet Napolitano's answer to 287g: those who are booked into local jails are checked to see if they're deportable. Illegal immigration fans complain that the program catches mostly non-criminals.
Under Ammiano's bill, all California counties would automatically opt out of Secure Communities, and they'd have to explicitly opt-in to the program if they want to be part of it. The Feds have previously stated that their program is mandatory, over the objections of San Francisco and others. Needless to say, that and other counties (such as Los Angeles County) would decide not to opt in to the program.
California Attorney General Kamala Harris - like Ammiano a strong supporter of illegal immigration - will apparently be meeting with him this week (link). While she hasn't yet indicated her position on the bill, expect her to support it in one way or another.
If you want to do something about this, send her a tweet letting her know what you think: @KamalaHarris
