Eliot Spitzer jeopardizes New Yorkers safety for votes (drivers licenses for illegal aliens)

New York governor Eliot Spitzer will allow illegal aliens to get New York driver's licenses beginning in 2008. You may recall New York City as home to a terror attack that took place on 9/11/01 and whose perpetrators were able to obtain 35 or so driver's licenses from various states. That includes those like California that - as New York will - make special allowances for illegal aliens.

That change clashes with the 2005 REAL ID law passed by Congress that states require, among other things, a Social Security number in order to get a license. States have until December 2009 to be in compliance.

States that fail to meet the standards will lose their certification by the Department of Homeland Security, meaning that driver's licenses in those states will no longer be valid for air travel, entry to federal facilities and for tax purposes.

Travelers will now have to carry a second form of ID, like a passport, which was met with criticism yesterday.

"To outright dismiss the security needs of our state and nation and provide illegal aliens documentation is dangerous and inconceivable," said Sen. Dale Volker (R-Depew).

"Gov. Spitzer should not view New York state driver's licenses like baseball cards - handing them out just to score political points."

He's not doing this for votes. Invaders aren't allowed to vote yet, even in New York. As for the legitimate voters, we'll see what they want when they recall or impeach Spitzer.

Tanstaafl, I downloaded the NY application for voter registration. Doesn't appear that any ID is actually required, only a signature swearing that the applicant is a citizen. Think illegals don't vote? No matter, The DL is still a bad idea, providing both a magnet and a gateway to further crimes.

You're right Edward, some illegals do vote, and there are lots of legal immigrants and brown supremacists in NY who will also vote for Spitzer. But the numbers don't explain what Spitzer is doing because any new votes for him are matched or exceeded by the votes he will lose. At any rate Spitzer's reasons for committing treason are less important to me than calling out that treason and seeing him punished for it.

this is not good. this is not a good idea either. for me i can say its a trap for all those illegal aliens out there so think a lot of times before getting a drivers license. if u want to live in an american dream you should do it in a legal way. just think about it...

Governor Spitzer is a walking, breathing train wreck. He might as well hang a sign on the Statute of Liberty that reads, “Just make it across the border”. Here in Los Angeles County: (2006) • The County’s annual health care costs for illegals are $423,360,829. • The County’s costs for all illegal subsidies exceed $1 billion annually. Not including education. • One in seven illegals in L.A. County have criminal records.
