Lindsey Graham denies NAU, smears Buddy Witherspoon (Beth Brotherton/WYFF; Robert Morris/Myrtle Beach Online)

Buddy Witherspoon is a dentist from Columbia, South Carolina who's challenging Senator Lindsay Graham, and he's apparently basing his campaign around opposition to illegal immigration and also opposition to the North American Union.

Rather than asking for evidence of plans for a NAU and doing research, Beth Brotherton from WYFF News 4 turned to Graham:
"I think most Americans would find it hard to believe, it is hard to believe, a baseless Internet rumor... People on the Internet talk about a highway built from Mexico to Canada, the countries merging, a secret plan to create a new currency, I don't know where these things come from... But the U.S., Canada and Mexico merging into one country is nothing to worry about."
(It doesn't help that Witherspoon refers to the "trans-NAFTA highway" rather than the term everyone else uses, "NAFTA Superhighway".)

A slightly less disreputable article is from Robert Morris/Myrtle Beach Online, who offers "Graham foe against any merger with Mexico" (link):
"They could be carrying illegal aliens, they could be carrying smart bombs, they could be carrying munitions or they could be carrying drugs," Witherspoon said, although he never professed a firm belief in any such union. "We don't know. But if that happens, you might as well kiss your sovereignty goodbye."

Similar theories were promoted by Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul, leading to an article called "Wrong Paul" on the nonpartisan Factcheck.org. That article calls the highway a "myth" and states that there are no plans for such a union.

Graham campaign manager Scott Farmer said Thursday night he was unaware of any secret plan or government conspiracy to merge the three countries into one, or any new international currency intended to replace the dollar.
The referenced article (factcheck.org/elections-2008/wrong_paul.html) is from Joe Miller and it's a stock dose of mockery and intellectual dishonesty. Surely, if Robert Morris were interested in the truth he could have mentioned that other sites offer supporting evidence.

If you support the north american union, then move to the EU. If I ever hear anybody in person say they support the North American Union, I will kill you right there on the spot and tell the authorities what i did, was no different than our soldiers fighting for our country. I recommend everybody who stumbles upon somebody talking about supporting the NAU, to kill them right away to protect our country. Supporters of the NAU are real terrorists. My grandfather fought for the United States, and I will fight(kill) anybody who is against the future of the United States. START FIGHTING AND REMOVING THESE TERRORISTS WHO WORK INSIDE OUR GOVERNMENT BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. TELL BUSH HE IS NOT ALLOWED BACK IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO. I'm so disgusted about this NAU, I think it's only appropriate to arrest George W. Bush for treason and if they won't do it, then I guess people like me will have to take matters into their own hands. I am all for the UNITED STATES you backstabbing piece of shit who calls himself president.

If something appears on an official web site it must be true. What do you call writers who mostly just cite OTHER articles as proof of something? Pseudo-journalists? And what do these 'reporters' call those people who just want to know what government officials who theoretically represent them are doing behind closed doors with corporations? Good citizens? To IMPEACH Don't kill anyone its not time. when OBAMA Get's his ass in the white house, he will make Amnesty the new right for his people and after that 40 million third world people will come here over night. and 50 million that are here will start to work the system big time. that will become the reason why the NAU Will be made in front of all of you for real. Americans will be forced to fight for freedom most of you will understand what freedom means by that time and understand what I mean by third world people. Our government is owned by other people and the ideals of freedom and duty to each other is not part of the third world ideals/one world, that is why so many live in the third world under total corruption and that is what the real owners want for us.

Fred, Look guy can stock up on al the ammo you want. But, I would relax just a bit. At least put the safety back on. If he does get the nomination, Obama is still going to go down in the most one sided landslide in presidential history. The vast majority of Democrats are not going to vote for a commie like Obama.
