Anti-American DREAM Act to be reintroduced?

Is Orrin Hatch (R-UT)'s explicitly anti-American Dream Act going to be reintroduced in coming months? This article mentions that in passing.

That Act gives illegal aliens discounted college educations. Meanwhile, U.S. citizens who haven't established residency in the state where they attend college would continue to pay the full price.

That's right: a citizen of another country who's here illegally would pay less than a citizen of this country.

Here's a handy chart:
illegal alien: discount
U.S. citizen: full price

Over two years ago I posted this entry, which has attracted an endless stream of comments from supporters. If you find any logical reasoning in their "arguments", please let me know.

To start off i support the dream act. I think it would be great if it was actually passed. Second of all i am getting very frustrated about people bringing up the issue of .. ohh my gosh!what would it do to taxpayers? why should we be rewarding these people?. to be honest to say something like that is to be truly ignorant. first of all illegal immigrants pay taxes too. When was the last time you walked into the grocery store and you were asked " are you illegal? ohh ok then, because if you are, you dont pay taxes" i mean honestly. Not only that, but some actually file, and pay for taxes through the IRS, i bet you didnt know that. One last thing, if were to tell you right now that you were not a legal resident of this country, even though your whole life you thought you were, or you even "knew" you were, you are telling me that i would have all the right in the world to kick you out, even though it was not your choice to come here in the first place?
Its not like this law is giving free rides to anyone either, the cost would ultimately be payed by the generation of students that would benefit from this. After all there is no where in the dream act that says "the income of these students will be tax excempt."I really hope people take the time to learn more about the dream act and make informed decisions about it. If you support the dream act, Thank you very much a lot of deserving students will be very grateful.

In-state tuition my friend Debbie is based on state residency. In order words, an immigrant does not get discounted tuition as opposed to an American citizen that decides to attend an out of state college that's simply their choice. The remark you have stated on receving an American education at the American tax-payers expense is erroneous. An individual submerged in an any economy is obligated to pay taxes on any product or service. Try working year-round an not getting a income tax return because of a fake social security number. I, myself, a Dream Act advocate can firmly agree we are not asking for special treatment but only to be given equal opportunity just to go to College and work. Remember that the people given the chance to work after College mostly are potential productive members of society not criminals.

i am currently doing a paper on the DREAM ACT. i believe that some people here in this web site are ignorant and should first research more information about the bill before they make their comments. The DREAM ACT is for immigrant student under 21 who arrived to this country when the were little and maybe don't even rememebr where the originally came from. these students work hard in school which is why they are being "honored" by furthuring their education. Its not their fault that they're parents brought them here, after all they were only kids. I dont think they should be excluded from something so important. And if they do go back to their country where would they go? After all they probably dont even remember it or even know the language. Well I strongly believe in the DREAM ACt and for all those selfish ignorant poeple out there like Debbie and Danny, you should be happy that you were born here and not have to live with all those struggles those people had.

NO ONE SHOULD BEG FOR ANYTHING OR EVEN BEG THOSE RACISM PEOPLE LIKE THOSE WHO MAKE COMMENTS IN THIS WEB SITE WHO ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS THEM SELF AND NOT ABOUT OTHERS WHO NEED SOME HELP. AFTER ALL THOSE IMMIGRANTS WHO LIVE IN THIS COUNTRY, WHO MANY AMERICAN CITIZENS DONT WANT IN THIS COUNRTY ARE THE ONES WHO DO ALL THE HARD WORK FOR THOSE LAZY AS CITIZENS WHO ARENT BRAVE ENOUGH TO DO THE HARD WORK IN THE HOT FIELDS. IF IT WASNT FOR THESE IMMIGRANTS THE ECONOMY OF SUPPOSLY YOUR COUNTRY WOULDUV CRASHED DOWN ONES AGAIN. YOU AMERICAN CITIZENS SHOULD GIVE THANK'S TO ALL IMMIGRANTS WHO DO ALL THE FIELD WORK SO YOU LAZY ASSES CAN HAVE FOOD ON YOUR TABLE. THEY MAKE IT ALOT EASIER FOR YOU TO JUST GO TO A SUPER MARKET AND GRAV FRESH PRODUCTS AND NOT HAVE TO GO TO A FIELD, I MEAN YOU WOULDNT EVEN TOUCH A FIELD YOU WOULD BE TO SCARE TO BECAUSE MAYBE YOU WOULD DAMAGE YOUR BEATIFUL HANDS OR MAYBE GET A SUN BURN. YOU GISE PREFER TO STARVE TO DEATH AND NOT WORK. I THANK ALL IMMIGRANTS AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT IN THIS COUNTRY FOR MAKING EVERYTHING ALOT EASIER FOR US AND FOR WORKING SO HARD IN THOSE NASTY HOT FIELDS AND STILL GETTING PAID SUCH A LOW WAGE AND NOT COMPLAINING. THANKS TO YOU THIS COUNTRY IS ECONOMICALLY OK. AND IF THIS COUNTRY HAS A LOW INCOME IS BECAUSE ALL THE AMERICAN TAXES IS GOING TO ANOTHER COUNTRY TO BE USED IN STUPID WARS AND NOT TO HELP THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, AS MANY AMERICAN CITICENS BELIEVE. SO STOP BEING RACIST YOU CITIZENS AND START WORKING IN THE FARM FIELDS IF YOU REALLY WANT ALL THOSE ILLEGAL ALIENS TO LEAVE YOU COUNTRY. I CANT IMAGEN ALL YOU AMERICANS DOING THE IMMIGRANTS JOBS. YOU WOULDNT EVEN LAST A DAY OR AN HOUR JAJAJAJA EVEN IF DONT ADMIT IT THIS COUNTYR NEEDS ALL THOSE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO SURVIVE SO LETS SUPPORT THE DREAM ACT AND IF YOU DONT WANT TO SUPPORT IT YOU KONW WERE GO**** ***.

oh shit totally agree debbie

I support DREAM act for several reasons.
No offence but I think people in USA should
know what DREAM act is really about and why bother to support it.
I strongly agree that US citizens think it's
enough to give away thier taxes to illgal
immigrants' children.
That's why I think that US citizens should
support this act.
If we paid so much money to educate illgal
immigrants' children why not let them to work
for us?
I know some guy who's older than me who paid
more than 22,000 a year to graduate from
UCLA and graduated and couldn't find a job
because he was a undocumented immigrant.
So he decided to go back to Korea because
there's no way he'd work for some construction
or grocery store for rest of his life with
education like that. He came here when he was
15, and he and his family was very sad because
he couldn't come back here for forever and he's kind of stuck there forever. (Under our great laws anyone who became illgal to live here lived here for certain period of time can't come back here. It's true go to library and read a book about immigrant laws.)
According to the number of immigrants in US, USA
is queit a place to live. If you are a citizen of
USA there are lots of adventages. All of great
cities are here, great laws are here and great
land we have! It seems that a lot of people all over the world wants to be an American that's why
we have so much illegal immigrants.
Bottom line is that any immigrants' children who
came here and got all the good educations (one of the free highest education system in the world) shouldn't be sad because they can't drive, open a new bank account, get a grant or scholarship for going collge, and get to work(undocumented alien can't get a working permit and you can't work without it at lot of places Try,, it's hard).
and I also noticed that in some state undocumented aliens can't get a fishinf permit!
what in the world??;; they rather go back to
where they came from! You can't even fish here
because you are undocumented? what a country you shoud be going back! (nice work state councils! you've done it! I have an idea! why don't we pass a breathing law that is if you are not a legal resident here you shouldn't breath so we can get rid of them fast? why? is it too brilliant?) I was mad when I heard that. We know we shouldn't treat people like that even though they are not citizens. Espcially when they are already Americans inside of their heart and love this country and also knows importance of education and belive in good future and lots of them even didn't know about their status.. they were kids!
you know what? DREAM act is all for them. New opportunity to help them to achieve their dream.
and it's not for every illigal students, If you want to be legal resident through DREAM act, you shouldn't have any criminal records and should have came before age of 16 and have lived here for at least 5 years and graduated or got GED for highschool.. etc. there are many more things they should have. That means basically they were "good kids" (you know them who works hard at school and don't do anything bad)
SO why don't we support this act for our better
country in future and now.. I bag you.
Please do it for our country.

I would like to know why our representatives are wasting their precious time writing legislation to benefit illegal immigrants. They have already gotten a free education so far at taxpayers expense and they are whinning to get more stuff at taxpayers expense and our politicains seem to think that is A-OK. I see, in many cases they seem to get the advantage over the American citizen and this just does not make any sense. They should not be in our country in the first place so why should they get all these advantages plus it just encourages more illegal immigration. What is happening to our country, we seem to be wanting to give it away.

John, your comments are a little over the top, don't you think? this is not liberal vs. conservative. Senator Hatch may be many things, but he's not a liberal.

There are plenty of incentives to come to the U.S. Ours is a great country, after all, and neither one of us would have it any other way. This little proposal won't make a dent on immigration to the U.S. one way or the other, believe me. It will, however, make our laws a little more compassionate and a little more sensible. Homeland security dollars should be used to fight terrorism, not honors students.

Give it up. Let this one go.

This is another instance of a liberal 'solution' that would greatly worsen the 'problem' it supposedly would solve or ameliorate. When you give such a powerful incentive to illegal immigration, you get more of it, and this kills the educational chances of the students who were already in difficulties, which it was proposed to ameliorate. The third world advocates say give me, give me, while offering their own failure as if it were a sort of merit! None of them even makes the slightest attempt to explain how increasing the scale of aggression on the net taxpayer, would not be evil. This is because morality means nothing to them; they see other people as just something with a 'duty to die' for them, in their wretched iniquity.

Please get your facts straight. You and your readers may not feel the same way once you know what the DREAM Act would really do.

The DREAM Act would apply only to people like the Wilson 4, discussed in the article you link to, who were brought to the U.S. years ago as children. It says that if they stay in school through to high school graduation, and if they can demonstrate good moral character, that they can apply for temporary residence.

If they then continue on to colleger or serve in the U.S. military, they can apply for permanent status and become eligible for U.S. citizenship after 6 more years.

The only thing the DREAM Act would do about in-state tuition is repeal the weak federal law that limits states' ability to determine the issue for themselves.

The Wilson 4 are a good example of why we need the DREAM Act. They are honors students who won a state-wide science competition, and who are all now in college. They all were brought here before the age of 7. I belive that at least one of them did not even know she was undocumented until the 4 state prizewinners traveled to Buffalo for the nationals and were picked up by the border patrol while visiting Niagara Falls.

Why should we squander needed Department of Homeland Security resources tracking down honors students who grew up here and who barely know the countries where they were born? All of the Americans whose lives will be most affected by their deportation--their classmates, their teachers, their neighbors--want desperately to keep them here.

That's what the DREAM Act does. It gives us a way to take them, and others like them, off the field of battle in the immigration wars. Please, is that anti-American?

I skimmed a few of them, and the general feel seems to be "right a wrong." In other words, these kids were punished because their parents brought them here illegally without their knowledge, and the only way to right this wrong is to help them get their education.

If I had been smarter when I was younger, I could have gotten a college discount also. I have dyslexia, astigmatism, and a deviated septum. I am Oppressed.
