.@JB_Cox: let's start in 1st grade. Are there only so many people UCLA can admit in one year, yes or no?
24AheadDotCom Backup's avatar
From @24aheaddotcom
.@JB_Cox: college admissions are in fact zero-sum. Otherwise colleges would have infinite slots. Some get in, some don't. Do you grok that??
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@24AheadDotCom It's not zero-sum because (a) colleges respond to changes in demand; & (b) most colleges accept everyone who meets min reqs.

.@JB_Cox: for every illegal alien UCLA admits, an American is forced to attend a lesser UC school (or a CalState school).
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@24AheadDotCom Your account is way too simplistic. Not zero-sum, supply isn't constant, etc.

From @24aheaddotcom
.@JB_Cox: now you just have to be intellectually honest enough to broaden that to other schools: UC Manteca instead of UCLA, etc.
24AheadDotCom Backup's avatar
From @24aheaddotcom
.@JB_Cox: in other words, you admit that by enrolling an illegal alien, Harvard forced an American to attend a lesser school.
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@24AheadDotCom I admit no such thing.

From @24aheaddotcom
.@JB_Cox: most would consider Penn a slightly lesser school than Harvard, and much lesser vis-a-vis admission to the "corridors of power".

From @JB_Cox
@24AheadDotCom The "they'll be fine" comment is from experience: I was admitted to Harvard, went elsewhere (not Penn), still got to Yale Law

.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom What if they lost a scholarship to a DREAMer? Can't just get a "lesser scholarship" and be okay.
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@Glaivester @24AheadDotCom Not quite what I said, esp. as I didn't accept the premises of the question (as I also stated).
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@Glaivester @24AheadDotCom Give me an example of that happening.
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@Glaivester @24AheadDotCom And DREAMers *are* "Americans" - just don't have papers yet. They're not going anywhere, so don't waste talents.

.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom DREAMers are "Americans?"Like the students at LiveOakHighSchool who are offended by the flag? http://t.co/VaZ20xGf8c

.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom If they are "Americans," why don't they want to speak our language? http://t.co/2haJakKcet

.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom I'm not certain how to find specific examples. Any time a #DACA recipient gets a scholarship, someone else doesn't.
Glaivester's avatar
From @Glaivester
.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom Or are you arguing that #DACA or #DREAMAct will increase scholarship availability to compensate?
John Glanton's avatar
From @ThenTheJudgment
@Glaivester @JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom Not to mention if someone gets displaced at Harvard, then someone gets displaced at Penn, on down.
John Glanton's avatar
From @ThenTheJudgment
@Glaivester @JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom And ultimately a poorer, less fortunate, born American citizen gets cut for a DREAMer from up the ladder.
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@ThenTheJudgment @Glaivester @24AheadDotCom That's not how it works. See supra re: supply not being fixed & how many colleges take everyone.
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@Glaivester @24AheadDotCom Not true. There are many DREAMer-specific scholarships. And DREAMers have inspired many to create new ones.

@JB_Cox @Glaivester @24AheadDotCom Guess magical "infinite supply! infinite spots!" thinking really is a mainstay of pro-immigration types.

.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom English is the American language. It just doesn't have the papers yet.
Glaivester's avatar
From @Glaivester
.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom So you are tacitly admitting that by calling DREAMers "Americans" you are endorsing a linguistically disunited US.
Glaivester's avatar
From @Glaivester
.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom So you deny DREAMers apply for generally available scholarships?
Glaivester's avatar
From @Glaivester
.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom Or have they inspired any scholarships that non-DREAMers are eligible for?

.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom Are you denying that there was fear at Live Oak that displaying an American flag would enrage Latino students?
Glaivester's avatar
From @Glaivester
.@JB_Cox @24AheadDotCom I'm not arguing legal decision, I'm wondering why American students would be offended by American flag.
Justin Cox's avatar
From @JB_Cox
@Glaivester @24AheadDotCom Then read the decision.
