What Donald Trump should say in his immigration speech
On Wednesday August 31, 2016, Donald Trump promises to give a speech that finally solidifies out his ever-shifting immigration position.
Here's the speech he should give. I'll compare this to the actual speech once it's available:
In order to solve immigration-related problems, we need to get smart. I've spent a lot of time thinking about it, and I realize my Muslims ban and my regions ban have downsides that render them not as effective as other plans. I've decided to just support stringent vetting for refugees, immigrants, and visitors. If someone doesn't have a trustworthy, verifiable paper trail, they won't be admitted to the U.S.
You may have heard different things from different people about my deportations force and so on. I've decided to scrap those ideas and instead I'll support attrition. I realize I didn't speak well of that plan some years ago, but since then I've reviewed it in more detail and I realize it's the best of the many options. Instead of any sort of legalization of illegal aliens, we'll move to encourage illegal aliens to return home on their own. We'll do that by gradually increasing immigration enforcement at the border and in the interior such as at workplaces. We'll also do that by gradually decreasing non-emergency services to illegal aliens. We will continue to provide emergency services to everyone in the U.S. regardless of their immigration status. However, there are various non-emergency benefits that illegal aliens or their children can receive, and those will be gradually reduced.
I realize now that attrition is the only way to truly reduce illegal immigration: any form of legalization will just encourage more illegal immigration and will give more power to those groups that support or enable illegal immigration.
One of those benefits that some illegal aliens can receive involves college. In some states, illegal aliens can go to state schools at the in-state rate, receive state funding, and so on. The problem what that is it harms American students: there are only limited college resources, and when some go to illegal aliens that means Americans won't get those resources. In the past I've been asked about "DREAMers", those who'd be covered by the DREAM Act. At the time I just went into an unrelated sales speech. I realize now that was wrong and that the DREAM Act and similar efforts are anti-American. From now on I'll move to oppose the national DREAM Act and similar state efforts. I'm highly sympathetic to DREAMers and I realize many would be an asset to the U.S. However, these efforts force me to choose between Americans and foreign citizens, and as your future President I have to come down on the side of my fellow citizens. While many DREAMers would be an asset to the U.S., allowing them to remain here would mean that we'd be depriving foreign countries of smart, active citizens. I will work with foreign countries to repatriate DREAMers so that they can help their own countries prosper.
I realize that many of you support the "Trump Wall", but I realize now that due to various factors that plan won't work. It won't be necessary, because from now on I'll be supporting a "smart wall". The reason why illegal immigration has continued for many years is mostly because politicians have allowed it to happen. To see that, imagine what would happen if every politician was strongly opposed to illegal immigration. If that were the case, they'd do everything in their power to reduce it. That's what I intend to do, and I figured out how. I realize that the way to make politicians strongly oppose illegal immigration is to make supporting or enabling it a threat to their careers. If a politician knows that supporting or enabling illegal immigration will end their career, then they won't support or enable it. And, the way to do that is to make smart arguments and discredit any leader who supports or enables it. I intend to do that in smart ways, by making factual, smart arguments. I realize some have complained about my habit of calling people names. I might still do that occasionally [pause for laughter]. However, I'll also be making smart arguments and encouraging others to do that same. And, I intend to do that in a non-partisan fashion: I realize that making the opposition to illegal immigration a partisan issue undercuts the opposition.
Thank you, and I look forward to being your next President!
