John Morton of ICE misleads, says he and Obama don't support amnesty

Back in 2007, former Department of Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff said that the DHS wasn't "in the business of doing amnesty". Now, the head of the DHS' Immigrations and Custom Enforcement ("ICE") is making similarly false claims.

From this:

Director John Morton denies the Obama administration favors giving amnesty to illegal immigrants, and says his agency is doing all it can to deport those who have entered this country illegally.

"The President doesn't support amnesty, the [Secretary of Homeland Security] doesn't support amnesty, I don't support amnesty," Morton told Neil Cavuto on FOX Business Network Wednesday night.

It's unclear whether he was just referring to the "administrative amnesty" ideas that were in a recent memo from the USCIS, or whether he's referring to the general case. In the first case, the Obama administration clearly wants to legalize as many illegal aliens as they can, and because most of their leading opponents are very weak they might think they can get away with it. They do support it; the only question is whether they'd actually do it. In the second case, Morton would be engaging in the reform not amnesty charade, playing word games just as many officials and politicians have done.
