Trump laughs after a fan suggests Border Patrol shoot illegal aliens. What he should have done instead.
Like everyone else, we urge you to wash your hands and engage in social distancing.
Unlike everyone else, we urge you to also help with this smart plan to get more tests, ventilators, and PPE. Everyone can do that plan right now, at home, in just 15 minutes.
If enough people help with the plan we can save lives. Take time out now and help get more desperately-needed supplies.
At a rally in Florida, Donald Trump yucked it up about how dim and deranged his base is, and showed yet again he isn't fit to lead.
[Trump said:] "When you have 15,000 people marching up and you have hundreds and hundreds of people and you have two or three border security people that are brave and great... And don't forget, we don't let them - and we can't let them - use weapons. We can’t. Other countries do. We can't. I would never do that. But how do you stop these people?"
At that moment, a rallygoer shouted, “Shoot them!” It is hard to hear the audience member’s outburst, but it has been confirmed by reporters who were there as well as Trump supporters who attended the rally.
The audience responded to the man’s “shoot them!” remark with cheers and applause.
“That’s only in the Panhandle you can get away with that statement,” Trump laughed with a shake of his head.

Now, here's what Trump would have said if he were smart, interested in patriotic solutions, and if he truly opposed mass/illegal immigration:
"Your idea is immoral and reprehensible. I realize some in my base would agree with you, so I want to speak directly to them. As I just said, that's not the American way. They shoot people trying to escape from North Korea. They used to shoot people trying to escape from East Germany. Other countries take similar actions against those trying to sneak into their countries. We don't and won't do things that way.
As your president, I must abide by the Constitution and eschew any form of unjust violence or any other violation of our laws. Here in the U.S.A., we do things according the laws and we don't solve political issues with violence. Your solution would be a violation of the Constitution and other laws and international norms. It would make the U.S. look as bad to the rest of the world as rogue regimes like North Korea look.
And, even by proposing that, you make it easier for those leaders who enable mass/illegal immigration. You're hurting the effort to reduce illegal immigration. As you'll see in a few hours, my opponents will jump on your suggestion to make me look bad, so you're hurting me too. But, hurting me is meaningless compared to hurting the effort to reduce illegal immigration.
Instead of dumb, deranged, immoral, reprehensible ideas that only help the other side, let me ask for your help to solve the problem in smart, sane, patriotic, and big tent ways.
The first thing you need to understand is that border problems don't start on the border, they start in Washington D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, and other cities. They don't start with potential illegal aliens, they start with our leaders: politicians, journalists, and the like. They're the ones to constantly enable mass/illegal immigration. If they didn't do that, illegal aliens would have much more trouble finding jobs or getting benefits. Those leaders roll out the welcome mat, and potential illegal aliens respond by coming here illegally.
I realize in the past I've constantly harped on the illegal aliens themselves, trying to demonize them. I realize now that's been a major mistake. The real groups I should have gone after are other leaders. And, instead of lunkhead ideas, I should have pushed smart, sane, patriotic, and big tent ways to undercut those leaders and reduce the damage they're doing.
Accordingly, I want all of you to realign yourselves on this issue. Instead of suggesting immoral and ineffective solutions, I want you to support moral and effective solutions. I want you to help me undercut those leaders who enable illegal immigration. And, I want you to do it intellectually, not in dumb ways like chanting or waving signs.
When you see a leader enabling illegal immigration, I want you to develop smart arguments that would undercut that leader to their supporters. What that means is, if their supporters don't watch Fox News, it's likely that Fox News arguments won't work. You have to use arguments tailored to their supporters. Don't worry: there are plenty of arguments why liberals should oppose illegal immigration and I'll be posting them shortly.
What I'm proposing is a much stronger, much more effective way to solve the problem, and it's completely consistent with our laws. Who will join me in this effort?"
Obviously, Trump would have to say things like that over and over before it sunk in and he'd need to say it in his own way. Some in his base would still reject the strong solution as weak because there aren't too many smart and sane conservatives. However, the few who are smart and sane could help solve the problem if they actually worked it at.
