Jack Kelly: we can have it both ways on illegal immigration!

The titular person is a write for the Toledo Blade, and he offers "Combine Enforcement And a Path to Legalization".

In brief, he wants to enforce the border. But, he also wants to legalize those already here.

What will happen when our border defenses are ignored by corrupt politicians and even more illegal aliens come here to take advantage of future amnesties is not specified. Perhaps he needs to think about this in a bit more depth.

He bases his opposition to simply enforcing our laws on the - dare I say it? - braindead strawman arguments offered by two leading lights of America's intellectual life:
George Will noted it would take a line of buses stretching from San Diego to Alaska to deport 11 million people. To devote the resources required to round up all those who pick fruit and clean houses would be like telling the police to forget about murderers and rapists to crack down on overdue parking tickets. That would be insane.

And immoral, said the Web logger the Anchoress:

"We have to think long and hard about what it means to gather people at gunpoint and put them on trains to send them to a place they do not want to go," she said. "That cannot be America, if she is to survive."
We also need to think long and hard about why anyone would take anyone who makes either of those strawman arguments seriously.

What we should do is enforce sanctions against employers for once (that means you, Tyson Foods!) for one year and see how many people then self-deport or stop coming at all before we enact new laws no one will enforce. (Who is going to do the background checks on 11 million people, TSA?) 100% enforcement is not possible, but if the carrot is taken away, illegal immigration will decline.

I'm beginning to think Fox also wants illegal immigration from Mexico to the US, because then his bosses can import cheaper labor from further south. So far his cheap labor tactics are working for Mexico, if not for us, based on this article about Mexico's growing economy.

Yes, these are diversionary tactics to keep the ssues clouded. Called disinformation. Long and cherished tactic of the old Soviet Union.
We eliminate hiring (the economic incentive) and the illegal aliens go home willingly and quickly.
