What Dave Weigel doesn't want you to see - 01/23/09

On January 8, Dave Weigel - formerly of Reason Magazine and now with the Washington Independent and The Economist - wrote a post at his site (link) mocking my efforts to bring to light the Obama citizenship issue. I replied with a comment showing how he's wrong (printed below), but the comment remains in moderation: Weigel is too afraid to approve it because it points out how much of a hack he is. It's standard journalistic practice to have a "right of reply", allowing those to be or those who have been written about to reply to articles about them. For instance, see this from the BBC. By not...

Challenge: get Hawaii to clarify their 10/31 statement - 01/23/09

This post assumes you're already thoroughly familiar with the Obama citizenship summary, so please read that through first if you haven't already. If you believe that FactCheck is telling the truth, here's what you need to do: get the state of Hawaii to clarify their 10/31 statement and/or obtain clarification from a recognized legal scholar. For instance, you can call Janice Okubo from the Hawaii Department of Health at (808) 586-4442 and ask her one of these: 1. Did the 10/31 statement (or any other official statement from the state government) confirm that Obama was born in Hawaii, as...

Hawaiian state law allows children born outside Hawaii get valid Hawaiian birth certificates (S. 338-17.8) - 01/15/09

The following Hawaii state law (Hawaii Revised Statutes S. 338-17.8) allows children who are born outside Hawaii to obtain valid Hawaiian birth certificates, depending on the residency of their parents. This law isn't restricted to those born in the other 49 states; a child could be born in a foreign country and still get a valid HI birth certificate. This law was added in 1982, as confirmed by law librarians at the U. of Hawaii and L.A. County law libraries.

Laura McCann/Washington Independent's faith-based "facts" about Obama certificate issue - 01/09/09

I just spoke with Laura McCann of the Washington Independent about the Obama citizenship issue, specifically relating to her paper's attempts to portray those who know the difference between the truth and falsehoods as tinfoil hat wearers.

Senator David Vitter misleads about Obama certificate issue (and Dave Weigel helps) - 01/08/09

Someone wrote senator David Vitter about the Obama citizenship matter, and his office apparently replied as follows: "Thank you for contacting me with concerns about President-elect Barack Obama’s citizenship status... I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue... Hawaii state officials have verified that President-elect Obama was born in Honolulu on August 4, 1961, making him a natural born citizen." Now, please go read the full 10/31/08 statement from those "Hawaii state officials". As pointed out repeatedly, they only confirm that Obama has a valid cert on file. They did not...

Hawaii Department of Health 10/31/08 press release about Obama birth certificate - 12/13/08

[IMPORTANT UPDATE BELOW] The following is the full text of the October 31, 2008 press release from the director of the Hawaii Department of Health, Dr. Chiyome Fukino. Nowhere in this press release does she verify that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. The PDF is available at hawaii.gov/health/about/pr/2008/08-93.pdf.

Dr. Chiyome Fukino responds to my Obama birth certificate questions, "takes the Fifth" - 12/10/08

On October 31, 2008, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, director of the Hawaii Department of Health, released a statement verifying that Barack Obama's birth certificate was on file in their records. However, despite what you might have heard, she did not verify that he was born in Hawaii. And, she did not verify that the certificate on file in Hawaii matches the "COLB" pictured on Obama's site and at FactCheck. That hasn't stopped many people from assuming that she verified something she did not. See the obama citizenship summary for all the details. I recently sent some questions to Dr. Fukino's...

Dana Milbank lies about Obama birth certificate - 12/09/08

Dana Milbank of the Washington Post offers "President Alien, and Other Tales From the Fringe" (link), about a press conference held by Philip Berg following the Supreme Court's decision not to hear the Donofrio case which claimed that Barack Obama is a dual citizen and ineligible for the presidency. And, it's not a big surprise that Milbank lied. Discussing statements made by Berg, he says: Uh, and what about that birth certificate showing he was born in Honolulu, a fact confirmed by the Hawaii Health Department and validated by independent groups? The state of Hawaii never confirmed where...

FactCheck's "Born in the U.S.A." as of December 7, 2008 - 12/07/08

Included below is the content of the FactCheck page retrieved from factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html on December 7, 2008. Screengrabs were taken, each of which is less than 200k: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8. The page content follows the graphic showing the part about which FactCheck lied: Born in the U.S.A. August 21, 2008 Updated: November 1, 2008 The truth about Obama's birth certificate. Summary In June, the Obama campaign released a digitally scanned image of his birth certificate to quell speculative charges that he might not be a...

Dave Weigel /Slate /Reason Magazine lies about Obama birth certificate issue - 12/04/08

Dave Weigel of Reason Magazine takes to the webpages of Slate to offer "Change They Can Litigate/The fringe movement to keep Barack Obama from becoming president" (link). It contains at least one lie and several misleading statements (I didn't read the whole thing, so there's probably more).

Ben Smith /Politico misleads about Obama birth certificate - 12/04/08

Ben Smith of the Politico offers the blog post "Thank you for your e-mails, cont'd" (link): The baseless Obama citizenship rumor is back, based on an attempt by its purveyors request that the Supreme Court get to the bottom of the case. The "rumor" isn't "baseless", despite what Ben Smith would have you believe: the fact remains that Obama simply has not proven where exactly he was born. In the paragraph above, Smith links to the October 31, 2008 article he wrote "Cover this! Inside the nastiest ’08 rumors" (link). In addition to mocking Obama's opponents, Smith says: ...there's lots of...

Ed Morrissey /HotAir misleads about Obama birth certificate - 12/04/08

Ed Morrissey of HotAir offers "The sadly obligatory SCOTUS birth-certificate post" (link) in which he joins the long line of people misleading about the Obama citizenship issue. As with others, he links to the Sara Olkon/James Janega article and, among many other misleading statements, says: The State of Hawaii only keeps birth certificates from births in Hawaii. The State of California only keeps birth certificates from births in California, Minnesota only keeps those from births in Minnesota, and so on. They don’t store information on births outside of their state. Why would they bother...

Dionne Searcey /Wall Street Journal lies about Obama birth certificate being "authenticated" - 12/04/08

Dionne Searcey of the Wall Street Journal offers "Obama’s Citizenship Again Questioned And Then Answered" (link), which links to and barely rewrites the article from Sara Olkon and James Janega of the Chicago Tribune.

Rick Montgomery/ Kansas City Star lies about Obama birth certificate - 12/04/08

Rick Montgomery of the Kansas City Star offers the same old article as others dealing with the issue of obama citizenship in "Anti-Obama bloggers challenge birthplace", link [1]. The sentence below contains one lie and two misleading statements: The argument is over his place of birth - Hawaii, if you accept statements by Hawaiian officials, his 1961 birth notice in a Honolulu newspaper and a certified document his campaign obtained 18 months ago. As detailed at the penultimate link, officials have never stated that his birthplace was Hawaii, only that his certificate is on file. And, the...

Sara Olkon, James Janega/Chicago Tribune lie about Obama birth certificate being authenticated - 12/04/08

Sara Olkon and James Janega of the Chicago Tribune offer "Tax activist's ad challenges Obama's eligibility for office" (link), a supposed fact-checking article that contains a few variations on the same lie. They falsely claim that Hawaii officials have authenticated the supposed Barack Obama birth certificate as shown on his site and at FactCheck. In fact, all those officials have done is verified that there is a certificate on file. It would be illegal for those officials to have released any details on whatever certificate is on file, and verifying information would likewise be illegal....

Marc Ambinder pretends Obama's citizenship isn't a "legit" topic - 12/03/08

Marc Ambinder of The Atlantic - a blogger who tries to pretend that he's a real reporter - offers "Discourse Watch: Obama's Citizenship A Legit Topic?" (link) in which he falsely states that questions over where exactly Barack Obama was born are "specious" and have "been convincingly refuted". At his post, the last bit links to Snopes, which is not a reliable source. In fact, where exactly Barack Obama was born has not been definitively proven. Ambinder might want it to be in the U.S., but that's simply wishful thinking. Statements from Obama himself are not proof, since he might not even...

Alan Keyes petitions court over Barack Obama's eligibility; guess: he has standing - 11/15/08

Gadabout Alan Keyes - last seen running for president under the banner of the American Independent Party - has filed a court petition in California trying to block the CA Secretary of State (Democrat Debra Bowen) from certifying that state's results for Barack Obama. Details here.

Obama's October surprise-ish: State of Hawaii says his birth certificate is genuine (but...) - 10/31/08

[See the 12/05/08 update below] The Associated Press offers an article perhaps misleadingly titled "State declares Obama birth certificate genuine" (link). There are some problems with the article, as will be discussed below. State officials say there's no doubt Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. Health Department Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said Friday she and the registrar of vital statistics, Alvin Onaka, have personally verified that the health department holds Obama's original birth certificate. Fukino says that no state official, including Republican Gov. Linda Lingle, ever...

The Non-Partisan Case Against Barack Obama - 10/29/08

You don't have to be a conservative or a Republican to be opposed to Barack Obama. Here are some of the reasons that almost anyone should oppose him:

Berg lawsuit over Obama citizenship dismissed; didn't have standing - 10/25/08

The Philip Berg lawsuit against Barack Obama in which he claimed that BHO wasn't eligible to be president due to not being an American citizen has been tossed. According to judge Barclay Surrick, Berg didn't have standing, saying: If, through the political process, Congress determines that citizens, voters, or party members should police the Constitution’s eligibility requirements for the Presidency, then it is free to pass laws conferring standing on individuals like Plaintiff. Until that time, voters do not have standing to bring the sort of challenge that Plaintiff attempts to bring in the...

FWIW: Berg says has tape of Obama's grandmother discussing BHO's birth in Kenya - 10/23/08

Picture a gigantic, flashing neon sign saying, "it might be true, but we need actual evidence" as you read this: [Philip J. Berg, Democrat and a former deputy attorney general for Pennsylvania] has confirmed he has a recording of a telephone call from the senator's paternal grandmother confirming his birth in Kenya... ..."This has been a real sham he's pulled off for the last 20 months," Berg told Savage. "I'll release it [the tape] in a day or two, affidavits from her talking to a certain person. I heard the tape. She was speaking [to someone] here in the United States." Just release it...

Has Barack Obama (legalistically) admitted his COLB is a forgery and he's not a U.S. citizen? - 10/20/08

I tend to be very doubtful of this, but I'm linking it here anyway just in case it turns out that Obama has fled the U.S. tomorrow. According to Philip Berg - he of the lawsuit challenging Barack Obama's eligibility to run for president - the defendents (BHO and the DNC) only had 30 days to respond to Berg's laundry list of admissions, which includes various things that would make BHO ineligible to run for president.

Where was Barack Obama born? In Hawaii? In Kenya? Somewhere else? - 10/19/08

(Please see the Obama citizenship page for the latest.) Was Barack Obama born in Hawaii, or Kenya, or somewhere else? He claims to have been born in Hawaii, but no definitive proof has been provided. It is a false statement to definitively state that he was born in Hawaii, as some media sources have done. The most they should state is that there's a very strong possibility that he was born in Hawaii and he claims to have been born there, but some reporters and other sources cross the line into pretending that the matter has been settled. The matter has not been settled, and in fact...

Karen Tumulty misleads for Barack Obama (Jeffrey Frederick) - 10/12/08

Karen Tumulty of Time Magazine offers this bit of mainstream media wisdom designed explicitly to support Barack Obama. It starts with something that could have been written by the BHO campaign: If John McCain is as serious as he says about running a "respectful" campaign against an opponent he considers "a decent person," word hasn't yet trickled down to his newly opened storefront field office in Gainesville, Virginia. Then, she shows her lack of respect for anything approaching real reporting: With so much at stake, and time running short, [Jeffrey Frederick, Chairman of the Virginia...

Is "Barack Obama" a complete scam? (Philip Berg lawsuit; Indonesia) - 10/11/08

Could "Barack Obama" be a complete fake? Hillary Clinton supporter and decades-long Democrat Philip Berg is suing Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee (DNC), claiming he's not eligible to be president. From this: the Plaintiff, Philip J. Berg, a Philadelphia attorney, alleged that Defendant Barack Hussein Obama is not eligible for the Office of the President because Obama lost his U.S. citizenship when his mother married an Indonesian citizen and naturalized in Indonesia. Plaintiff further alleged that Obama followed her naturalization and failed to take an oath of allegiance...

FactCheck recompresses, removes EXIF data from Obama birth certificate photos - 09/30/08

Back on August 21, FactCheck released photos apparently showing Barack Obama's birth certificate (actually his "Certification of Live Birth" or "COLB"). At the time, I noted that the EXIF information (added by the camera) showed that the pictures had been shot months before and I mentioned such possibilities as them not setting up their camera correctly, a bad battery, and the like.

FactCheck presents real Barack Obama birth certificate. Or do they... - 08/21/08

The twists and turns surrounding Barack Obama's birth certificate appear to have ended with FactCheck.org claiming that they've seen and handled the real certificate, complete with an official stamp and everything. They've even got pictures here. Well, that ends that! Except, all they have is the "Certification of Live Birth" (known in the trade as a "COLB"), and not the original birth certificate or a "long form" certificate containing things like parents' cities, etc. And, for some strange reason - as pointed out in a comment here - the EXIF information on their photos shows that at least...

Barack Obama is a dual citizen? Kenya? Indonesia? Sister's name on birth certificate? - 08/10/08

Is Barack Obama a dual citizen of Kenya? The "Things you might not know about Barack Obama" post from "The Rocky" of the Rocky Mountain News (link) drops this bomb in the middle of their list: Holds both American and Kenyan (since 1963) citizenship. That's from four days ago and no correction is appended.

Eli Saslow/WaPo lies in support of Barack Obama - 06/30/08

Eli Saslow of the Washington Post lies in support of Barack Obama while giving him a front page advertisement in the story "In Flag City USA, False Obama Rumors Are Flying" (link). Consider this: On the television in his living room, Peterman has watched enough news and campaign advertisements to hear the truth: Sen. Barack Obama, born in Hawaii, is a Christian family man with a track record of public service. But on the Internet, in his grocery store, at his neighbor's house, at his son's auto shop, Peterman has also absorbed another version of the Democratic candidate's background, one that...
