Remember when I said that new U.S. senator Kirsten Gillibrandmight be corrupted? Well, it just happened as earlier today (Sun. 2/1) she met with Latino leaders in New York and has now pledged to push comprehensive immigration reform, aka amnesty [1]. She's also going to meet with Michael Bloomberg to discuss the "controversial issue" of local police working with ICE on immigration enforcement.
She also pledged to support the DREAM Act, would make it possible for many undocumented high school students to obtain a legal status after meeting certain eligibility requirements, and follow the lead of her predecessor, Hillary Clinton, on a bill that would secure funding for ESL programs.
UPDATE: Both El Diario and the New York Daily News say she's now a CIR supporter, but that isn't in the New York Times report from Michael Powell (link). Powell does say that she now supports the Dream Act, although he only describes it without naming it. And:
[She] said she no longer supported cracking down on so-called sanctuary cities like New York that fail to enforce all immigration laws... which would have led to financial penalties for the city. "In a lot of these issues, it's a case of learning more and expanding my view," Ms. Gillibrand said in an interview after the meeting.
Even despite such a capitulation:
Some of the Latino elected officials who met with the senator at the Brooklyn offices of El Diario, the Spanish language newspaper, did not sound persuaded by Ms. Gillibrand’s statements.
UPDATE 2: I've asked Gillibrand's office for a statement on the El Diario article and probably won't receive a response. Feel free to try and leave a comment if you get a response: 202-224-4451
UPDATE 3: The mystery deepens. Per this, she'll be calling on Obama to "stop deportations immediately" and she says "she is now in favor of creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants" and "she will vote no on deputizing local police to enforce immigration laws" and "she also says she will not vote in favor of eliminating federal funds and tax incentives for so called sanctuary cities -- which is something she fought for in the House of Representatives." That page also teases an exclusive interview she did with NY1 Noticias, but I can't find anything like that at ny1noticias.com; all the video is basically her just talking like a politician and saying that her positions might change.
And, one of those who met with her on Sunday, NY City Councilman Joel Rivera, is quoted here:
The raids and deportation that's ripping our families apart, that needs to stop... I posed the question, 'are you willing to commit to call for an executive order to stop these deportations?' and she was unable to make that commitment."
