The L.A. Times, the DREAM Act, and a jolly good Fisking

A recent L.A. Times' editorial on Orrin Hatch's DREAM Act (which would give lower college tuition to illegal aliens than to U.S. citizens*) gets a good Fisking here:

...I have no problem with the idea of liberalizing citizenship laws, in and of itself, though again that is the province of the federal government, not the states. I have a huge problem with rewarding people who flout the law by pretending they are "citizens," particularly when their faux "citizenship" gets them privileges that are not available to immigrants who obey our laws, or even to U.S. citizens who recently moved from another state.

My posts on the DREAM Act and related bills start here.

*No, you didn't read that wrong. Orrin Hatch and Dick Durbin want to give citizens of another country a better break than U.S. citizens.

Let me say that again: Hatch and Durbin want U.S. citizens to pay higher tuition than illegal aliens.

I felt the need to write on behalf of all the people who have dreams. Before I befriended an illegal immigrant, I did not know how cruel our immigration system can be. I was deeply sadened to learn that my friend who was brought here when he was 16 by his parents could not become a citizen without marrying an American. He graduated from high school here, and has had to endure tremendous hardships. As an American, I feel it would be unamerican to NOT support the dream act. Let freedom ring from coast to coast by reforming our immigration system.

well what can i say i agree with sindi we shouldnt hate were all human beings. i was brought here by my parents when i was 5 years and the exact situation that other immigrant have. i really want to futhur my education and have my own bilingual business so i can help all hispanic all over the world....i would really want people to support the dream act....we all need it please god listen to all of us ......

Hi everyone. I just wanted to comment on the issue which is the Dream Act. Well, huh. I was reading some of the stuff Terry was saying. And the thing that really made me laugh was that she complained on how her brother couldn't find a construction job. NEWS FLASH for Terry. IT'S NOT OUR PROBLEM!!!. He is a us born, he has a SSN # and every privilege all american people have. It's his fault if he didn't go to college and got a degree so he wouldn't be outside on the scourging sun. So don't blame us for your/his mistakes. Us illegal students don't have the privilage to go to college, plus we have to suffer humiliation from people like you. Don't you think that some stuff that you said was a little harsh? It made me cry, and it should have made you too Terry. Look at yourself in the mirror and tell me "Do you like the person you are?" Well now that that's out of my system. I just wanted to tell a little bit about my situation. I was brought here by my parents from Guatemala when I was 3 years old. I went to school here from Kindergarten-12th grade. I graduated a year ago. But what now? Thankfully I live in a state where illegal immigrants can still get their driver's lisence. I can't get a job, why? because I have no SSN# or work permit. I have no money right now, so I can't even think of going to college. I want to get my PHD for Child Psychology, but without the Dream Act or my husband helping me, it's not going to happen. My parents have done so much to keep me dress and fed. I'm just glad that my brother and sister were born here so they can have the privilege EVERYONE deserves to get in this country. And because I've been here for 17 years,(Consul Processing) I have to go back to my home country for 4-6 months. I don't even know that place. I was too little to remember. And even if I did go back, what would I do? I am praying to God that with the help of many people as like the people in this forum the Dream Act will become a reality for all illegal students. For the last time, lets not blame anyone, but let us all reunite, to enforce the Dream Act. All of us can make it happen. Thank you all for supporting the Dream Act and God bless all.

Hi I was broght to the US when I was least the a year old. I came here with my older sister who is a US citizen and her mother who I not really sure what her status was at the time was. My step mother and my father had my older sister in California and then had to go back to Mexico for some reason. When my step mother came back to the US she broght my sister and me but with out my father.I couldn't pervent my crossing, I couldn't even walk or do much of anything. We have lived in California for about 18 year, in which my step mother had two more kids who are also citizen. Last year I finish high school but because I am not a citizen I can't get money for college even if I got into Cal University so now I am at a JC. I moved out of my step mother house before I turn 18 because of problem that we were having and it has been very hard just to pay for school, rent, food, and basic item one needs but with the help of friends I'm starting my second semester where I working on transfering to get my BA and living okay. Still it would be nice to have a fix income so that I didn't have to worry about paying everything off and getting school work done. Now I also worry about the future and if I have a BA what would I do with it I can't even work a fast food place let alone a business were my BA would be useful. I trying to get document on behave of my older sister who is 21 and can petition for me but I have to wait 12-14 year before getting a residence card and file the paper in Mexico but would incounter a 3-10 year block out, meaning I wouln't be able to come back for those year. So I would be in a country that I dont know with no one I know, By MYSElF. I know so many people who dont have papers and dont even want to finish high school because they dont see a point when they may not be able to go to college. The Dream Act would help so many people out because they, like me, just want to be make of a culture and country that we were raise in with our families and friends. Support the DREAM ACT.

If I would have had a choice on weather or not to migrate illegally to this country I would have elected to stay in mexico. My family is quite prominant and I would have had no problems economically. But our case is diffrent we did not come to this country to better our economic situation. My mother was a pediatric surgeon. The reason why we had to come here was because our lives were in danger. My father wanted to execute my mother for taking us away. He has contacts all over mexico and he would surely find us in due time. You would not believe all the hardships we had to go through. My mother; a well educated doctor had to pick up aluminum cans from the side of the road to feed us because she didn't have the necesary documentation to get a job in her field. my family lived in an aluminum shack for aproximately eight years. Now I am twenty years old and I am currently attending a two-year college that I pay for out of my own pocket. I do hope that the dream act passes,However if it doesn't I have lived in the u.s. illegally for 14 years I think I can manage a few more.

Please support the student act because we are sufferring let our dream come true

Does any one have any info about any laws in illinois that would allow me to go to college with out having immigrant documentation.

SUPPORT THE DREAM ACT!!!!

This is all too funny!!
This is all in act.

For those living in california I hope you know you can attend either a 2 year college or a 4 year university legally by using AB540. AB540 allows you to attend school paying instate tuition if you attended high school in california or you received your GED in california. AB540 allows you to attend school legally, but it does not allow you to receive any type of financial aid. For more information go to MALDEF.org Good luck.

How do you get into College?
Well, for many of us, the answer is quite simple: you lie during the enrollment that you are an American citizen. The government only verifies this information when you are applying for financial aid, but because we do not want the "heat"; we lie and deny any financial assistance. The schools do not care as long as they are getting paid and the only records they check are those of you in high school or transfer records of any other previous college or university (each school has a different enrollment preference in grades, reference or recommendation letters, SAT scores, etc.).
Many of us, as we have been trying to explain for some time, are not that stupid and can work to pay for our own tuition. In my case, I work as a consultant (that

It's just funny how some people here think that "illegal immigrants" are all from Mexico, crossed the borders and what-not. Well I came here (from Southeast Asia)years ago by plane on a tourist visa. That would mean that I entered this country LEGALLY. GOT CHECKED FOR DISEASES and came into this country through THE FRONT DOOR. with NO BOMBS or TERRORIST PLANS and shit. It was getting out control in my country and almost have no hopes for a bright future. If my mother hadn't found any good place to work at over here or if she thought that there wouldn't be any difference than from where we came from, we wouldn't have stayed here.So then we worked on changing our status into working visa for her and student visa for me. Still, no ILLEGAL acts have been committed here. My mother didn't just get a job in a hellhole under the table and "not pay taxes". I went to a private high school and paid 300 dollars a month for tuition. Yes thats right. So they could sponsor me into getting my student visa. But since the terrorist acts they have made it virtually impossible for EVERYONE like me to get proper documentation here. I have to appeal to the people who are basically "playing God" in my life right now coz there have been some mix-ups in my damn application which details i wont bore you by elaborating on it. My lawyer filed it and everything. yes all the shit they asked for i gave it to them. now I can't get a driver's license, a social security number and all that I need to live a simple, normal life that is just a dream, no pun intended, and would forever be a dream. Thanks to the wonderful immigration people who just denies practically everyone who would even just have the slightest idea of trying to change their status into the proper one so no LEGAL immigrants would feel cheated on or whatever.

although, i am not an illegal immigrant i am in the same situation as those who are illegally here. i am currently on TPS, and graduated from highschool two years ago, while in highschool i maintained a 3.5 GPA, and took many honor and advanced placement classes. i thought that i was going to get federal aid, but due to my status i can not get in state tution. i want to go to college and right now i am goign to college but i have to pay everything out of my pocket, and i am not goign to the college that i want to go to. right now i am at a community college, what am i'm goign to do when i get my associate degree but i can't afford to pay for school if i wanted to recieve my bachelor degree. there are so many kids like my self who are trying to go to school and not depend on the federal goverment for further assistance. a majority of these kids who are immigrants just want the chance to go to school and learn. what about the kids who are american citizens, but don't want to go to school? do we not have the same right to learn as any other person, especially if we have the motive and capabilities.

This message is to B.A.,

I would like to know how did you enroll in University when you are an illegal resident.

Hi, I would also like to share my personal experience so that those against the Act would change their mind. I was born in Mexico, however my mom brought me to this country illegally, at the age of 11 months. I feel like this is my home, and I am very proud of it evethough I am considered an illegal to them. I am fatherless, therefore I pay for my full time,
cal state tuition, transportation, housing, and other expenses. My mother cannot get a decent job due to the 9/11 incident. I don't have any sort of a criminal record instead I wish to help this country in any way I can once I get my residence. For those who are against or in doubts please help us, who only dream of persuing a proper education in our own home.

you mother fuckers have no clue about what its like being an illegal alien. To not be able to even go to school because of fear of deportartion, not being able to go to work because you don't have a social security card. How the fuck is it a childs fault that they were brought to a country illegally? Can they do anything about it? And since they are here and ARE leading a PRODUCTIVE life, is there anything they can do to change their statis?oh wait thats what the dream act is for, so before you close minded people complain about a few more hundred dollars you have to pay for college, think about all of the people who are illegal and work shitty jobs that no one else would work just to make their crappy existence mean something. There are millions of people all over this country that were born here and have legal statis and ruin their lives costing the government to use money on them. Then again there people who are illegal immigrants who work long hours just to put food on the table but they can't get a break because of the fact they were brought here as a baby (YOU CAN'T CONTROL WERE YOU GO IF YOU ARE BROUGHT TO THIS COUNTRY AT 5 YEARS OLD) that try to make something of themselves yet have no hope only have the DREAM Act. Being an illegal i can honestly say that we are not all alike. We have a common goal of citizenship but my education level far surpasses that of a "typical" illegal immigrant. To think that a that child grows up in America as an American and becomes a responsible member of society cant get a break because of something he can't control is outright ridiculous.

I have a question regarding the DREAM Act. I and Indian American (Asian) who moved to the US from Canada with Canadian citizenship. My family applied for a green card and were waiting. However, two years ago, a tragedy struck one of our close relatives in Canada and my family rushed to Canada without thinking to get an Advance Parol (permit to leave country-takes about 3 months to get!). When we made our trip back to the US, we got held at the border. They wouldn't let us in at first, but then decided to let us in. However, we had to start the whole green card process over again. I am a senior and applying to colleges. The green card will take another three years to get. Without it, I wouldn't get in-state tuition or eligible to any finacial aid to expensive colleges. Say the DREAM Act was passed today and was in session the next day. Would I be entitled to the in-state tuition and financial aid, even though I'm not an illegal immigrant and currently in the legalization process?

Iam a 21 year old girl, I am one of the people whom the dream act will help. I was 9 years old when brought to this country. Some times I feel like I love this place(The US), more than some citizens. I have no love for the counrty my parents brought me from. This is my home. I Fear that one day I will be made to go to a place which is not my home and Alien to me. What am I to become in such a place? I dont know the ways of this distant world or how to read and write their language. God I pray to every day not to take my life from me. I AM AN AMERICAN, I just wish people realize how much it hurts when I am tolded I am not.

My name is Gabriel. I was born here in the US to two American citizens. My girlfriend, just graduated high school this year like I did. We are very much in love. We plan on having a family, and we want to have the American dream. We are both god-fearing individuals who speak very good english. All we want is to make the best life for our future children. I want to be a Mathamatican. She wants to be a nurse. All we want is to die holding each others hands. But there is a problem with our dreams. We cannot afford to send our children to the best schools in California. We cannot afford the best living place so our kids will not grow up around gangs and drugs. We cannot afford to even live together. Why? I am the only one able to make money at this point. She is an illegal alien. She cannot provide the best life for her kids because she cannot get a job. She now sits at home, and watches TV. She does not drain the economy. All she does, is sit and wait for me to come by and comfort her. She voulenteers at a local Old Folks Home. Only to be reminded she can never be paid to help these elderly ones. She has to totally depend on me. She has nothing. I am everything to her. In our little world, I am the president. She cannot even marry me to gain citizenship, because she would be forced to go back to Mexico when the gov't figured it out. She and I are stuck. If we have kids, we are forced to live in a small aprtment in some ghetto. Our kids are gowing to grow up, and quite possibly turn to drugs or gangs because there parents cannot give them a fair chance to stay in school. Those of you who say that Illeglas should leave, why dont you spend a year in mexico, and see how long you last? You dont speak your native language, you have no citizenship, you have no friends. You have nothing. Just like my future wife has here. She didnt have a choice. She was brought here when she was 3. ALl she wants is to is be a nurse, and help women give birth. Help women spread life. But she can't. BEcause people who only think of themselves, and dont want to look into someone elses misfortunes... people who do not want to help others, keep only thinking of themselves. If we could learn to get along. To help each other, maybe more 9/11's can be diverted. Why not try to help each other? "My jobs are being taken away!" If you went to college, I can guarentee you 99% of the jobs you qualofy for, an illegal couldn't even touch. SO now your excuse is "They eat my tax money". Illegals take what money? They dont go to college, they cannot work an actual job, they cant use medicare... care to explain how they "eat your money?" Just try to see that they are disadvantage. You are above them on the "Job(food) Chain". Are you really going to step on them because they "are here illegally"? Try to think it of it like this: They are not taking what isnt theres, you are giving someone something who does not have what you have.

I just don't think that it is fair that things, like not having been born here, can deprive you from achieving your goals.

I was the Salutatorian of my senior class(2004) and also got accepted to UCBerkeley, being that I have only been in this country for 5 years.

I really think that all the money that the gov. gets from people like us that pay taxes should go to the youth of us, illegal immigrants.

I believe the dream act should be passed. This is the United States of America, and as a U.S. citizen it enrages me to see people who have the potential to be succesesful in life, fail because of their legal status in this country. This is supposed to be a country of freedom and equality. No one should be denied the right to higer education.Everyone is capable, and therefore should be given the chance."For a better future, let's help make dreams come true, and pass the dream act."
