Sierra Club members turned out in historic numbers in April to elect five of their peers to the Board of Directors and to reject a ballot initiative that would have forced the group to support restrictions on immigration. Over 15 percent of the Club's membership returned 122,308 ballots - the second highest in the Club's recent history - and defeated the anti-immigration measure by more than a 5 to 1 margin...That's linked from their home page by the headline "Club elects new board; measure to restrict immigration soundly defeated". The prominent placement given to the defeat of the measure, and the use of the word "soundly" immediately prompted me to add, "Did you hear that, Mr. Gelbaum?"
"I did tell Carl Pope [Executive Director of the Sierra Club] in 1994 or 1995 that if they ever came out anti-immigration, they would never get a dollar from me..."In case they want to make sure that he hears their message, perhaps they should rent the Goodyear blimp, buy billboard space, print up some coasters, or do all three.
