For Earth Hour, I'm going to light some toxic waste using old tires and a flaming squirrel

Some group of leftwing environmentalists are going to protest global warming and the like by dimming their lights for "Earth Hour" between 8:30pm and 9:30pm tonight. For every action there's a reaction, and in this case the reaction is as dumb as we've come to expect, with some people encouraging others to light Christmas lights or the like in response. Moving just a little to the right on the bell curve, the Competitive Enterprise Institute is promoting instead celebrating "Human Achievement Hour" (cei.org/human-achievement-hour):

The Competitive Enterprise Institute plans to recognize “Human Achievement Hour” between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on March 28, 2009 to coincide with Earth Hour, a period of time during which governments, individuals, and corporations have agreed to dim or shut off lights in an effort to draw attention to climate change. Anyone not foregoing the use of electricity in that hour is, by default, celebrating the achievements of human beings.

At some point in time you have to put away childish things. Conservation isn't necessarily a leftwing thing, unless one defines non-leftwing as "bought off by polluters". It would be possible for smart non-lefties to support conservation at the same time as opposing the anti-human extremists, those who use conservation to promote different agendas, and so on. Instead, the reaction makes non-lefties look even more like tools of industry and supporters of pollution.
