I'm not willing to put much faith in this until I see evidence from HUD; a very basic search didn't bring up anything but if anyone has another news report or link to hud.gov please leave it in comments.

I linked to that report at open city and its natural enemies. Malkin had a report saying 50,000 mortgages in the Denver area were to illegals, which would suggest a national total of 2 million at least, though 5 million sounds possible.
Seem dubious to me; see this comment [1]. In time we'll what the facts are -- could be that looking at mortgages given to those who provided only a TIN will be a good proxy for illegals, since the immigration status of those who got mortgages might be very difficult to quantify otherwise.
