Gavin Newsom: fines unless Frisco residents meticulously sort their trash

From this:
Garbage collectors would inspect San Francisco residents' trash to make sure pizza crusts aren't mixed in with chip bags or wine bottles under a proposal by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

And if residents or businesses don't separate the coffee grounds from the newspapers, they would face fines of up to $1,000 and eventually could have their garbage service stopped...
Read the whole thing for much more, such as this handy chart showing what would go where. And, below the chart is Newsom's new theme song.

Believe it or not, in areas that do have comprehensive curbside recycling for this work the waste has to be sorted properly when it is put out. Otherwise the whole purpose is defeated and/or it has to be sorted again, which greatly increases the expense and/or reduces the effectiveness. And it is amazing how many idiots just cannot be relied on to sort properly in even the simplest way. Either that or they just don't give a shit.

I'm all for recycling and composting, but the composting part of that law sounds ridiculous. As the saying goes, compost happens. It doesn't matter where, the food will break down. Perhaps Newsom would rather not have the healthy compost "poisoning" the plastic in the landfill? *scratches head* While I wish everyone would recycle, there is no way to make a law like this fair for everyone. Look at the apartment example provided. Besides, it seems like an at-home issue, not a government one.
