Fred Barnes: paid to promote immigration "reform"?

FoxNews just had a segment with Fred Barnes discussing Randy Graf's loss to Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona, and he discussed how Graf was a member of the Minuteman Project and how (of course) this loss indicates voter support for "comprehensive immigration reform".

The only problem was he looked like he knew he was lying. In fact, he looked like a paid shill who had been given a certain line to read. He had the lines down pat, but it was the furtive movements of his eyes that, had I been speaking to him about a used car, would have caused me to run the other way.

I have no proof of this, but if anyone can post that specific segment to Youtube it might be a bit instructive.

"You have to remember that Kolbe is gay."

The only openly gay Republican in the HofR, eh. His National Journal Ratings for 2004 (most recent) was Lib/Con 23% to 76% on Economic issues, 58% to 42% on Social issues, and 55% to 44% on Foreign Affairs issues. Graf was well to the right of this district on most social issues. A more moderate Republican WITH the right stand on immigration could have won handily. However, the more moderate Republican that Graf beat was an open-borders cheerleader. Too damn bad.

This was Kolbe's district and he had a fairly moderate to liberal record on social issues and foreign policy issues.

Yes. You have to remember that Kolbe is gay.

What will she actually do?

Hard to see a rookie congressperson going against the party line.

Any thoughts on why Graf lost?

1) Graf was good on the immigration issue but was farther to the right on other social issues than the district was itself. This was Kolbe's district and he had a fairly moderate to liberal record on social issues and foreign policy issues.

2) The Democrat Giffords waffled all over the place. Yeah, she was for enforcement too. What will she actually do? Didn't really say.

3) The RNC etc pulled all support out of this district weeks before the election. Graf was doomed by his own party.

If Fred Barnes is a paid shill for pro-illegal immigration reform, he's been one for a while. He's been a stout proponent of "comprehensive" immigration reform for at least the last 2 years. His co-editor at the Weekly Standard, Bill Kristol, has said that he is a liberal on immigration issues. I wish it wasn't true, but I think they really believe in it. And I bet they believe in it because their money protects them from it's bad effects.

Any thoughts on why Graf lost? Brit Hume said that the district Graf in which Graf was running was the one in the country most ravaged by illegal immigration. Hume also suggested that the growth in the Hispanic population may explain the loss.

Independent, in-depth coverage of immigration, politics, and media bias since 2002. Also: multiculturalism, Los Angeles, California, privacy, and occasionally celebrities and wacky humor...
