Illegal aliens, supporters to protest in Washington

Illegal aliens and their supporters are agitating for more rights inside our country, and thousands will be visiting Washington DC in March.

Thousands of pro-immigration advocates will protest next week at the U.S. Capitol against a bill that they fear would result in fines or jail time for operators of businesses, churches, day-laborer centers and other facilities that help illegal aliens.

The National Capital Immigrant Coalition (NCIC), an umbrella for about 40 immigrant-advocacy groups, says the bill -- HR 4437 -- is "anti-immigrant."

The measure is expected to come before the Senate Judiciary Committee next month.

"HR 4437 permanently criminalizes undocumented immigrants and everyone who knows, cares about or assists undocumented immigrants," said Kim Propeack, a spokeswoman for CASA of Maryland, an NCIC group...

Obviously, it's trivially easy to discredit Casa and all those who associate with them. See "Casa of Maryland helps illegal aliens get driver's licenses" and "Casa de Maryland might soon get big surprise".

Would the reader please send more information on Casa to any news organization that mentions them or has a quote from one of their members? Let's rain on their parade.

Is anyone dumb enough to believe that HR 4437 would "criminalize everyone who knows, cares about, or assists undocumented immigrants"? Assistance can come in a wide variety of forms, some potentially criminally culpable and other not, but the idea that someone will be prosecuted for "knowing" or "caring about" someone is simple hysteria.

When McGeorge Bundy, former White House national security advisor, became Ford’s president in 1966, the foundation’s activism switched into high gear. Bundy reallocated Ford’s resources from education to minority rights, which in 1960 had accounted for 2.5 percent of Ford’s giving but by 1970 would soar to 40 percent. Under Bundy’s leadership, Ford created a host of new advocacy groups, such as the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (a prime mover behind bilingual education) and the Native American Rights Fund, that still wreak havoc on public policy today. Ford’s support for a radical Hispanic youth group in San Antonio led even liberal congressman Henry B. Gonzales to charge that Ford had fostered the “emergence of reverse racism in Texas.”

Modeled after the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, MALDEF, with an initial $2.2-million grant, was formed with the mandate "to assist Hispanics (legal or otherwise) in using legal means to secure their rights." A second grant was made to establish the National Council of La Raza "to coordinate efforts to achieve civil rights and equal opportunity" through support of Community Development Corporations. Under the guidance of newly installed McGeorge Bundy, the Ford Foundation, in addition to creating MALDEF and La Raza, funded numerous other Hispanic advocacy groups, such as the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project and the Latino Institute. In 1974, Ford would establish the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund to mimic MALDEF's efforts among Puerto Ricans.

Over the next three decades Ford and other liberal institutions, such as the Rockefeller and Carnegie Foundations, would seek to expand the rights of Hispanics in a variety of ways. One report by the Latino Institute found that in 1977-78, "the Ford Foundation, provided over half (54 percent) of the support for Hispanic needs and concerns. The Ford grants were nine times greater in value than the foundation providing the next highest amount." The survey also revealed that MALDEF alone received almost one-third of all funds given to Hispanic-controlled organizations. To date, Ford has given more than $18.9 million to MALDEF, and $12.9 million to the National Council of La Raza.
