Julie Myers now head of Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Bush has made several recess appointments, including Julie Myers to head the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE or BICE).

Almost everyone agrees that she has no real qualifications for the job.

However, she is eminently qualified in Bush administration terms:

* she's the niece of Air Force Gen. Richard Myers
* she worked for Michael Chertoff when he was at the Justice Department
* she's now married to his current chief of staff.

"I am pleased that the President has appointed Julie Myers as Assistant Secretary for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement... Julie and Tracy have consistently demonstrated that they possess the experience, judgment and determination necessary for these demanding positions. They have my trust and full support, and I look forward to their contributions to the department's mission."

Unqualified? How could you say that, she was the president's special assistant for personnel! I mean really, if you can't use a job like that and family connections to get you to something a bit cushier, why waste all that time in personnel?

On the plus side, she will have experience in reading the resumes of folks who try to get jobs in ICE now.

"no real qualifications for the job"

The same could be said about many jobs in Washington, and also elsewhere. As Bill Maher once observed: Mary Bono got into Congress mostly because her husband skied into a tree.

Independent, in-depth coverage of immigration, politics, and media bias since 2002. Also: multiculturalism, Los Angeles, California, privacy, and occasionally celebrities and wacky humor...
