Car problems...

The last time I had any major car problems was over a year ago. Driving up the White Mountain Road near Bishop, CA the temperature light suddenly came on. Stopping didn't help; adding a bit of water didn't help. Apparently the water pump had broke, and not in such a favorable place. I was 10 miles from the 395 and at 8000'. It was a Saturday also, but at least it was during the day and mostly all down hill. Making an executive decision, I decided to risk limping back to L.A. by putting water in it occasionally. I got the pump replaced the next Monday, and nothing seemed to be damaged.

Other than deciding to have a brake job, I haven't so far had any serious car problems on my tour. Until earlier today.

"What is all that water doing on my windshield?" I wondered. Did I pass through an area where they're spraying the plants at the side of the free, er, highway? When the temperature light went on, and I saw a bit of steam, I realized what had happened.

Pulling over, I quickly noticed that one of the hoses had flown off. I put it back on and put some water in the radiator. Thankfully, it was during the day and a weekday and I was about a mile from Monterey, a small town with a few auto repair places. I've driven through many other places in which it wouldn't have been so good to have a breakdown. Like, Maine north of Bangor during a wicked rain storm, or the ghettoes of Chicago or Philly. The first place I stopped at thought it was probably just the hose getting loose, and I agreed with him. So, with the addition of some antifreeze, I was on my merry way.

Just as I began to get back on the highway, the temperature light came back on again. Oh my. (Even my '77 Datsun B210, '86 Mazda 626, and '88 Mitsubishi Mighty Max had a temperature guage; my '94 Jeep Cherokee just has a light.)

So, I pulled into another garage. After much deliberation and thunking, we decided to see if replacing the temperature sensor would do it. I was certainly hoping that it would, as I was standing there running Plan B through my mind.

Plan B involves trading the Jeep for another cheaper car, and using that to limp back to wherever I'm going back to. I'd rather avoid Plan B if possible.

Thankfully, Plan A seems to be still in full force and effect, as I was able to drive about 60 miles after the incident without the light going on or anything else happening. And, it just cost me about $30 and a couple hours, so I consider myself quite lucky.

I have a 1999 expidition. I took it to the mechanics to get the engine lines, injector and all that cleaned. They cleaned it with Sea Foam. But the fuel tank was almost on empty. When the engine started the exhaust threw out alot of grey smoke. And I felt a big performance loss in my engine. I'm wondering if they damaged something because the cleaner was superconcentrated.

Hello reading through the forum I can offer what I have found with my 97 mercury mystique
I had trouble with it wanting to quit at stop signs etc or didnt always want to start . It would idle up and down. It was that the heat sensor had to be replaced.
Now I have to find out why I have to add water /anti freeze enery few days I cant see where it is leaking but it has to be going somewhere

I have a 1988 BMW German spec. I have a problem with the car over heating. the thermostat is good. Just replaced the radiator and the car still over heats. When I turn the car heater on it doesn't get hot but the car it self is over heating. I don't understand whats going on with it. Would the water pump cause this?

i have a 2002 grand prix car. the moon roof open and started to go back but stop. I check the fuse and the switch for voltage AND FOUND 12V ON BOTH.WHAT IS THE PROBLEM

i'm having problems with my car. someone put in new wires today, and now it does'nt want to excellerate. before he worked on my car, it sputtered when you came to a stop sign, and gave it gas to take off again.

I have a car which is Opel Vectra 97 2.0l. The ingine working temp. is too hight and the radiator starts boiling. the temp. meter indicates (95-100 centegrade). We check the radiator we found it in good condition. the ambient temp is 50 centegrade. Please inform me what is the problem and the solution.

[I have no idea, but 50 Centigrade works out to 122F. My suggestion is to move. If the rad. works, then perhaps it's the water pump or perhaps the problem described in the post above. --LW]

Well I have a 1994 Toyota camry and not to long ago the engine light came up and when I turn on the car the car starts shaking. When i'm driving the car acts like its not receiving any gas and then it reacts and starts going again, but when I stop it starts shaking but it has never turned off can you help me?

[No, but you might want to take it into a shop and have them check the computer codes -- LW]

I am driving a Ford Mercury Cougar 1989, 3.8 ltr engine.
I have radiator problems. There is air bubbling out of my radiator overflow container. There was a overhead check done with a special liquid, there was no discoloring. Thermostat has been changed. I could see no leaks and it seams I am losing antifreeze.
Where could it leaking from?

Ever notice how the most difficult problems can be solved with the simplest solutins. My dad took my car out for a test drive to try to figure out why it kept acting up so much and guess what? Very little transmission fluid was left so I had to put it in when my dad brought the car home. I guess that explains why my car was always giving me trouble.

I have a serious problem with my car. I e-mailed Midas for help asking them to give me an initial idea of what the problem was and they suggested I bring it in. I now leave my problem to you guys. I drive a 95 Ford Mercury Mystique. Whenever I stop at a red light or a stop sign the car feels like it's about to shut itself off because the needle on the speedometer drops then quickly rises again. The car has actually stopped four times already while I was at a stop light or stop sign. I would then have to put the car in park and restart the car. The car never sputters or shakes or makes any strange noises it simply shuts off. What's worse is after I apply the gas pedal after stopping at a traffic light or stop sign, the car jerks a couple times before finally moving. It doesn't do this at every stop but at quite a few. This also causes the needle on the odometer to jerk back and forth. If that wasn't enough, sometimes, when I stop at a steep hill, and then apply a little pressure to the gas pedal, instead of the car moving forward like it should it drifts bacwards. I have the car in Drive when this happens but I find I have to step on the brake, and then put the car in park, step on the gas twice and then resume driving. The entire time this stuff happens I never hear any strange noises and the car never sputters. Could someone please tell me what could be wrong. I'm very lousy with cars. I wouldn't be able to tell a carburetor from the transmission. No joke.

[Like it says above, this is not a car site... Have you checked your fuel filter? Is the carb (if it has a carb) loose and sucking in too much air? Any loose spark plug wires, dirty distributor connections, drain on the engine from air conditioning or something, etc. etc. etc.? --LW]

I am driving a 1989 Topaz GS. Just lately the AMP light has come on and is staying on. I don't see any signs of other problems. Can you tell me why this is happening and what I have to do to fix it,also how severe is the problem.

Thank you
Donna

[I repeat: this is not a car site. Plus, this sounds like an electrical problem and that usually means people with specialized knowledge. I'd suggest taking it into a shop and having them check the computer codes. --LW]

i have a question i drive a 97 chevy malibu and my engine light came on and my car shakes when i drive it sum ppl say its the fuel filter! wut were my car be doing if i needed a new fuel filter???

[Lonewacko comments: not being even a backyard mechanic and this being a 1.5 year old entry on a site not related to car repair, I have no idea. However, it seems like not getting enough fuel could lead to some hesitation. And, since fuel filters are fairly cheap it's not like they're trying to sell you on replacing the engine or something.

Does it shake when you aren't moving? If not, that probably has nothing to do with it. Could it be engine mounts, shock absorbers, or similar? I'd suggest calling the Car Guys or posting at a more appropriate website.]
