Tea Party loses another race for the GOP (Paul Ryan, upstate New York, Kathy Hochul, Jane Corwin) - 05/24/11

If you're a Republican Party partisan, the tea parties are a mixed blessing. On the one hand, their insane rantings bring a fresh piquancy to the sometimes staid GOP. On the other hand, they're putting pressure on the GOP to be crazy, extremist, and largely unappealing to moderates. And, they're splitting the vote, even when the "Tea Party" candidate appears to be a fake teapartier. Thus it is in the case of the NY-26 special election from earlier tonight. Democrat Kathy Hochul "defied political experts [who gave] her little chance of success [and] ground out a stunning and surprisingly...

Obama zings Trump, millions of Americans at White House Correspondents Dinner - 05/01/11

Barack Obama spoke at the White House Correspondents Dinner last night and joked about Donald Trump and smeared millions of Americans who have valid questions about Obama's past. None of what Obama did was presidential, but it's what most of his supporters want and his detractors are generally unable to do anything about it.

Tim Pawlenty's crazy Tea Party outreach - 03/01/11

Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty is reaching out to the tea parties and doing it in big, crazy ways. Over the weekend, he appeared at the Teaparty "Patriots" summit in Phoenix, Arizona and said among other things this completely false statement (video: peekURL.com/vNQNJUT ): "I'm here to say thank you for standing up to the ruling class" [meaning: "liberal power brokers, guardians of the status quo and the royal triangle of greed: big government, big unions and big bailed-out businesses"] In fact, the teapartiers are having their strings pulled by one set of the "ruling class",...

Illegal immigrants in Minnesota costs $188 million/year; "liberals" whine - 12/11/05

Minnesota's Department of Administration recently released a report showing that illegal immigrants to that state cost them $188 million a year. Governor Tim Pawlenty commissioned the study and, while offering no specific legislation at this point, appears to be intending to do something. That caused this: "It's playing to racism, basically," said Rep. Karen Clark, DFL-Minneapolis. " ... I think it is a desperate move.

"The Crisis of 'Sam's Club' Republicans" - 01/11/05

From Sully stand-in Reihan Salam in the LAT: ...What Pawlenty realized - and what President Bush apparently fails to grasp - is that the Republican Party has changed. The rich still vote for Republicans in large numbers, but they're not the party's heart and soul. To win elections, the GOP increasingly relies on socially conservative voters of modest means. Which is why Bush's second-term agenda is so spectacularly wrongheaded.

"[MN Governor] Pawlenty Asks Cities To Rethink Immigration Ordinances" - 09/02/04

From this: Minneapolis (AP) Gov. Tim Pawlenty has asked the city councils of Minneapolis and St. Paul to reconsider laws that limit situations in which police officers can ask about a person's immigration status... Pawlenty asks each city to amend or repeal "an ordinance which effectively prohibits police officers from inquiring about immigration status if such an inquiry is the sole basis for questioning or detaining an individual."
