"Al Gore's son busted for drugs in hybrid car"

This site and others are frequent critics of Reuters. However, in this case, they deserve a Pulitzer. Give 'em two Pulitzers!
The 24-year-old son of former Vice President Al Gore was arrested for drug possession on Wednesday after he was stopped for allegedly speeding in his hybrid Toyota Prius, a sheriff's official said.

Al Gore III -- whose father is a leading advocate of policies to fight global warming -- was driving his environmentally friendly car at about 100 miles per hour on a freeway south of Los Angeles when he was pulled over by an Orange County sheriff's deputy at about 2:15 a.m..

Why not, indeed, Fred? This kid has seen the spectacle of Dad and Mom living in a huge house with an equally huge swimming pool, all powered by all the types of energy that cause so much of our environmental problems but which THEY avoid by paying a "fine". Swell. So why shouldn't Junior believe that the laws don't apply to HIM as long as he (or the 'rents) can pay the fine. Book him, Danno!

I can't fault a parent for an errant adult child. I've seen too many families with a golden child and then a devil child to think that the fault lies only with the parent.

Mary, I agree as long as Gore's kid is being treated the same as anybody else with the exception of a bit more jailhouse oversight for his protection, there is not much to be said here for now. If folks can show he has received special treatment than that is another matter.

What's "environmentally friendly" about a Prius travelling 100 mph driven by an intoxicated driver? I'd rather be sharing the road with a Suburban driven at the speed limit by a driver who was sober. Even when reporting on the abuse of a vehicle by a prominent person, Reuters still has to hew to its political agenda. Pulitzer? You're kidding.

Did he post bail using carbon credits or with money printed on dead trees?

Just to be clear... _What's "environmentally friendly" about a Prius travelling 100 mph driven by an intoxicated driver?_ Not as much as at lower speeds, that's for sure, because at that speed the internal combustion motor is going full tilt (although it is still a small motor). But the article says "driving his environmentally friendly car at about 100 miles per hour", meaning the car itself is "environmentally friendly" (which it is, comparing its mileage and emissions profile to a Suburban, e.g.), not necessarily that driving it at 100mph is. Also, the article makes it clear he was stopped for speeding, not for driving erratically ("intoxicated"). Although he may have been high, and therefore impaired, he has not been charged with that (yet) -- he was charged with drug possession. Driving over the speed limit isn't always unsafe, but 100mph at nite....well, he may yet be charged with reckless driving. _Did he post bail using carbon credits or with money printed on dead trees?_ In California: odds are it was electronic money, with electrons created by burning natural gas. There are less "environmentally friendly" technologies for generating electricity.

Hilarious on many levels. First, it is funny that someone can get a Prius up to 100 mph and if you can do it you either have to be very brave or very high. Can you imagine tooling along the freeway at 70 and this ding-dong zips past you in his tiny little half-electric car. Second, I doubt that someone driving a Prius at 100 mph is very environmentally friendly. Third, I am sure the next story we will here of is this kid is going to go into rehab. He already did rehab once to get out of jail; lets see if a judge will let him get out again with a promise that he's going to change his behavior.
