Schumer, Senate Democrats discuss their immigration plans, including a national ID card

Spencer Hsu of the Washington Post discusses a press conference Senate Democrats held earlier today to discuss their plans for comprehensive immigration reform (link). As previously discussed, Charles Schumer supports a national ID:

"I'm sure the civil libertarians will object to some kind of biometric card -- although . . . there'll be all kinds of protections -- but we're going to have to do it. It's the only way," Schumer said. "The American people will never accept immigration reform unless they truly believe their government is committed to ending future illegal immigration."

It's quite difficult to believe the government is committed to following their own laws since most political leaders support or enable illegal activity, with some even outright promoting it such as Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Schumer said legislation should secure control of the nation's borders within a year and require that an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants register with the government and "submit to a rigorous process to convert to legal status" or face immediate deportation. Rejecting the euphemism "undocumented workers," he said: "Illegal immigration is wrong -- plain and simple."

See secure the border and amnesty require. And, if he wants to immediately deport those who won't take part in the program, why can't he do that now? Regarding the last sentence, that's just posturing. However, if you get a chance, it would be a good thing to bring up when discussing this issue with him or other leaders.

The Obama administration gives a noncommittal response, but:

Key Republicans reacted cautiously, saying they would work with Obama if he thinks a deal is possible.

"What we need now is not another photo op at the White House," Sen. John Cornyn (Tex.), the ranking Republican on Schumer's panel, said Tuesday. "What we need is a plan from the president of the United States."

And:

Also unclear is what backing might come from business groups. Schumer's priorities did not include expanding a guest-worker program, which employers sought. Instead, Schumer said that any deal must also create mechanisms to attract highly skilled immigrants, control the flow of low-skilled immigrants and protect native-born workers.

A system to access legal workers "is non-negotiable from a business point of view," said Tamara Jacoby, president of the ImmigrationWorks USA lobby, adding: "But we're open to a discussion of what that legal mechanism should be."

_"The American people will never accept immigration reform unless they truly believe their government is committed to ending future illegal immigration."_ I'm not so sure about the "unless" part. At this point, with all his immigration 'reform' bullshit, this hypocritical Jew Schumer, who would never advocate for Israel to reform its immigration policies, is like the Senate counterpart of 'One Bill Gil'.

"Schumer said legislation should secure control of the nation's borders within a year and require that an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants register with the government and "submit to a rigorous process to convert to legal status" or face immediate deportation." Schumer should enlighten us on exactly what devices he anticipates being around a year from now that aren't equally available now. E-Verify? 99.5% accurate. Can't get much better than that. Require that illegal aliens register with the government? How? If they won't obey our laws now, why would they "submit to a rigorous process to convert to legal status"? The only way they'd do that is if it is ridiculously lenient and easy. And, face it, who would trust the government not to go back on its word? Amnesty - even amnesty with some costs to the person being amnestied - is forever. Enforcement goes down the drain the first time our Congress critters refuse to appropriate money to pay for it, which would be the first year after amnesty is granted. If I entered into a business contract with somebody and delivered everything I promised and more only to have the other person refuse to honor his part of the contract, I'd be crazy to enter into any sort of contract with this person ever again. What I'd need to do is seek a means to force the other person to honor his part of the contract - the same contract that I had already fulfilled my part of. Show us the enforcement NOW. Then amnesty will not be necessary. Most of them will be gone in about 2-3 years.

Both of the above are right, but to understand one other fact this government is not a government for the people and by the people its a soviet government in other words it is our enemy. if the rats inside the political boy lovers government do what i think it will do its time to take up arms and do the right thing.

Schumer is just a poser on immigration who is up for reelection in 2010. He wants to protect himself for drawing a credible Republican challenger in 2010 willing to make immigration an issue. As head of the DNSC he knows that a lots of Democratic Senators are very vulnerable on immigration in 2010. Schumer's brown nosing hack reputation makes him completely untrustworthy on immigration matters. On other 2010 New York Senate election news, Sen Kristen Gillibrand appointed to Hillary's seat by Gov. Patterson with the support of Chuck Schumer is now expected to face a tough Democratic primary fight by Congresswoman Caroline Maloney and/or Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in 2010. Ultra Leftie Jerry Nadler may also enter the race. Gillibrand was a moderate upstate Democrat from Albany who as a congresswoman supported immigration enforcement measures like the SAVE act and 287g. However, as soon as she got the Senate nod she caved into the downstate ethnocentric open borders lobby and the NYT under the threat being labeled a "hater". And as was said at the time what was the point politically. The NYC lefties and the NYT were going to attack Gillibrand anyway and throw their support behind a pro Open Borders downstate leftie. It will be interesting to see if Malroney, Stringer or Nadler are desperate enough ethnocentric panders to make immigration the issue in the primary. Gillibrand is wounded either way and even if she survives the primary will face a tough fight against a staunch immigration enforcer like Republican congressman Peter King of Long Island. The last thing Gov. Paterson wanted was for immigration to be a major issue in the 2010, not after the Spitzer driver's license for illegal aliens fiasco. One suppects the Obama administration feels likewise. Looks like a bunch of upper class Manhattan left-liberals and the NYT might make immigration a front and center issue on both coasts.

Not identifying E-Verify as the perfect tool to extract illegal immigrants from the workplace, doesn't wash with the American worker anymore? The once great US Chamber of Commerce, compliant with the ACLU, and other anti-sovereignty factions, have pushed our soft politicians to null E-Verify. Sen. Harry Reid(D-NV), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) have lost a great deal of public loyalty, because between them, they manufactured excuses to undermine any new law that enforced our weak immigration laws? Chief of Homeland Security is Napolitano who joined the other pathetic Senators, to stealthily direct ICE not to implement large immigration raids anymore. This has also been noticed by the public audience in the months since inheriting the office from Chertoff. By no means are these the legislators who are stating they are supporting E-Verify, or any other immigration law, but in actual fact voting against it.

This has also been noticed by the public audience in the months since inheriting the office from Chertoff. By no means are these the legislators who are stating they are supporting E-Verify, or any other immigration law, but in actual fact voting against it. Their attitude shows up distinctly when they keep voting E-Verify being delayed for Federal contractors who of all people should be using it. It displays their complete apathetic when politicians allow 300.000 illegal workers, making use of Stimulus money in the construction industry. The 1986 Immigration Act has never been enforced, it has always been fully jeopardized and now the politicians want to replace it, by enacting another AMNESTY. Amendments to the 1986 Simpson/Mazzoli bill is all that's required to add strength, to our border security and internal enforcement. Even any new health care for the American people is compromised by the illegal alien pestilence, because a great portion of the uninsured in our nation are these people heading in large numbers to emergency hospitals. In the decades since Europe saw the ingress of illegal immigrants into their countries, they have seen medical care sink in the quality of service, including rationing. Here in America health care has also been disparaged by added forced mandated laws, that illegal people must be attended to, for even the common cold--which becomes yet another financial impediment to the legal population. It's just sheer madness on the part of the open border globalists, to keep feeding the country with millions of cheap labor. The burden for these services has never been financially appropriated from the businesses that employ foreign labor, but--ALWAYS--from the US taxpayer. We have been brain-washed by the media and government that there are only 11 million illegal people who have violated our laws, whoever this is far from the truth. We can not afford for another AMNESTY to succeed, and must fight back tooth and nail? It's enactment would terrify the most conservative of financial analysts, of even larger obligation on every taxpayer. Of all the immigration tools at our disposal, we must not let our government exempt E-Verify from our ordinance. It should mandated in every human resources office that--ALL ERRORS-- can be reconciled, after being hir

They better get new phone systems for the Capitol. With the current economic tailspin and with no end in sight, citizens are going to be extra pissed off this time around. CIR is not going to happen without a fight.

Forget the phone. If they try to destroy this country Americans should take to the streets much like the brave citizens of Iran.

Mary is right if people just do nothing we will come-apart and become some third world joke. by the way within 20 years without mass amnesty we will still become a third world nation with the population mostly hispanic "but if we stand up and say no", "and mean it", "ith guns", in our hands we may stop the rats for now. but anyway you cut it we as a nation of laws, and away of life that is great is doomed to become some monkey country. but when the history is put down on paper, "we who live now", will be said to have put up a fight and not just handed over our butt's like a prison bitch.
