Stanford University/Associated Press: only racist Dems won't vote for Obama (biased poll, Knowledge Networks)

Stanford University, the Associated Press, and something called Knowledge Networks have released a poll which is, frankly, designed to call those Democrats who won't vote for Obama racist [1]. In fact, the official title is "Poll: Racial views steer some white Dems away from Obama" (by Ron Fournier and Trevor Tompson, link). As discussed here there's a lot of data involved and I'll leave sorting through it to others. In a comment here, someone states that the survey uses the answer to "moderately well" as the mid-point of the statistics, rather than using a neutral answer. I haven't verified that and discussing how that impacts the study is left to those more familiar with how these type of things are conducted.

However, the first link has a sidebar called "Adjectives that describe blacks" featuring the answers to the question "How well does each of these words describe blacks?" And, in some ways the answers to that question are more a test of whether someone is politically correct to the verge of being delusional.

For instance, the responses from white people to "law-abiding" and "violent" are:
Democrats: around 25%/15%
all whites: around 20%/20%
Independents: around 17%/23%
Republicans: around 14%/22%

That adjective is horribly imprecise. However, considering the high rate of crime among blacks (link, link), one might consider that those who answered yes are doing so based not on prejudice so much as simple facts. Better questions would have attempted to ascertain whether respondents think all blacks, many blacks, blacks in the same socio-economic class as Obama, or many young black males are "law-abiding" or "violent".

Likewise with some of the other adjectives. 25% of white Dems said *most blacks* are "intelligent at school". What exactly that means isn't clear, but that 25% now needs to explain the differences in test scores and overall performance. There are a large number of articles along those lines (eg., link). Once again, a more precise question is needed to determine whether racism is involved or whether someone is basing their reply on statistics.

Whatever the merits of the underlying study (and the above doesn't show it to be worth much), the overall purpose is clear: Democrats who don't vote for Obama are racist.

Denver public school system dumbs down "highly gifted" program to be more "equitable" (ACLU)

Jeremy Meyer of the Denver Post offers 'Minorities, poor get "highly gifted" lift/A new DPS system awards some kids an extra boost to make things more equitable', but don't worry it's even worse than it sounds:
...To determine who gets into [their "highly gifted" program], the [Denver Public School district] previously relied on oral tests that measure a student's reasoning and IQ.

To make things more equitable, the district now relies on a sum of measures to determine eligibility into the highly gifted program — cognitive tests, annual assessments, reading tests and teacher nominations. Next year, the district will consider artwork and writings.

Also, students get extra points toward entry into the program if English is their second language or if they receive federal meal benefits — a measure of poverty.

For example, a student who scores as low as the 75th percentile on cognitive tests could be considered, [Diana Howard, principal at Polaris at Ebert, the district's sole elementary school for the highly gifted and talented] said. Previously, that child would not have been admitted...
"Gifted" should mean smart, not artistically talented, since those are entirely different traits and in many cases not present in the same person. Those who are able to take challenging math classes may not do that well in painting classes, and vice versa. They might end up having two different math classes: those for the students who are really gifted, and those who've just been declared "gifted" by the administrators.

And, by including subjective measures such as assessments and nominations in the mix, they're opening themselves to teachers and administrators deciding to give an "extra boost" to certain less-qualified students who hold left-leaning political views or who are of the same race as the teacher or administrator. All the other issues involving affirmative action - and its pushers like Howard and the Denver Post - apply as well.

And, as might be expected:
The American Civil Liberties Union in California last year threatened to sue the Tustin Unified School District over low numbers of Latinos and African-Americans in the district's gifted programs.
Then, we find out that one of DPS's officials needs to go back to math class and learn that school resources are not infinite:
"If there are a limited number of slots in those programs, then the wealthier student who is excluded will always feel wrongly excluded if their test scores were higher than a lower-income student or Hispanic student who was included," [Joshua Wyner, executive vice president of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation] said.

Jaime Aquino, DPS's chief academic officer, said adding more highly gifted students will not exclude others.

"Every school gets an allocation per student who is identified as gifted and talented, so they can provide them some enrichment or some differentiated services within the building," he said. "You have several magnet programs throughout the district. Many still have room. It's just whether the parents want to send their kids to those schools."
Hopefully they'll get sued either by one of the American counterparts to the ACLU or by some of those parents whose children have been excluded from the program.

Civil rights solved, lawmakers push for diversity in Capitol statuary collection

From this:
Just nine statues in the Capitol's 100-piece Statuary Hall collection depict minorities, a figure that some lawmakers claim is woefully inadequate.

Concerned about the lack of diversity, the legislators are spearheading efforts to make changes to the Capitol's artwork...
Those quoted as supporting a de facto quota system for statues include Reps. Charlie Rangel, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Jesse Jackson Jr., Joe Baca, and Mike Honda. I'll admit that they have a slight point, even if they won't admit that this is a completely trivial issue and they're engaged in a power play. But, it least it will mean that Baca will have less time to work on opening the borders.

ACLU loses church/state separation case (Jesus painting in courthouse)

Their Communist paymasters friends and allies are probably still steamed about this September 10 story:
A disputed portrait of Jesus Christ will remain at the Slidell city courthouse in Louisiana after a federal judge refused to grant a demand by the American Civil Liberties Union to have the painting removed...

In response [to the ACLU], the city of Slidell mounted additional portraits of 15 of history's preeminent lawgivers alongside the Jesus painting [which had been there for a decade]. The framed portraits added on Aug. 31 included those of Confucius, Hammurabi, Moses, Charlemagne, and Sir William Blackstone. Alongside the 16 framed portraits are a reproduction of the U.S. Constitution and a mounted explanation of the various figures in the paintings...

Block a bulldozer for Al Gore! (civil disobedience against global warming)

According to Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times (Times Select; excerpt) Al Gore not only "vibrates with passion [about global warming]", he wants young people to take direct action. Now, certainly, civil disobedience is perfectly justifiable in many cases, but I don't think Big Wooden Al is either Gandhi or Thoreau, even as he tries to assume their mantles for his own ends.
I ran into Al Gore at a climate/energy conference this month, and he vibrates with passion about this issue -- recognizing that we should confront mortal threats even when they don't emanate from Al Qaeda.

"We are now treating the Earth's atmosphere as an open sewer," he said, and (perhaps because my teenage son was beside me) he encouraged young people to engage in peaceful protests to block major new carbon sources.

"I can't understand why there aren't rings of young people blocking bulldozers," Mr. Gore said, "and preventing them from constructing coal-fired power plants."

Al Gore now available in holographic form

Al Gore - before John Kerry the president-in-exile of the United States of America - opened the Tokyo version of Live Earth... as a hologram! Concertgoers invariably said, "kamisata wa merari, holographic-a Al Gore!", which roughly translated means, "The holographic version is even more creepy than the real version!" On the clip he stresses his globalist credentials by literally holding a floating Earth; I had a flashback to watching the (IIRC) United Nations-produced "Big Blue Marble".

Hopefully the holographic data has been replicated on hundreds of servers worldwide so that Gore can continue to spread his global message for centuries to come.

Take the Al Gore Live Earth Climate Pledge!

Al Gore has a simple demand: that everyone on Earth takes the Al Gore Live Earth Climate Pledge! Whether you're sitting in a theatre, a theater, a [pub/bar/saloon/cantina/lokal] or whatever, raise your right hand NOW and repeat after Al Gore:

Please don't mind the sudden cut when he enumerates the Pledge Conditions; that's only there to help you remember the Conditions. While some might complain about the demand about signing an international agreement, Big Brother assures us it's necessary. As for turning in those who refuse to take the Pledge, that's necessary to avoid the Coming Global Superstorm. And, if you're worried about that nagging feeling that Al Gore isn't just interested in climate change but has bigger things in mind, you're probably right.

UPDATE: I realize watching the Two Minute Gore can put anyone in a bad mood, so as an antidote let me suggest the anti-Al of the Movement, Sexy Simran Sethi:

UPDATE 2: As Live Aid, or whatever it is, continues on somewhere, I now require you to read "How Celebrities Apply Eco-Consciousness to Everyday Living":

Actors such as Morgan Freeman, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst drive electric or fuel-efficient cars. Canadian singer Alanis Morisette, who earned the 2003 Environmental Media Association Missions in Music Award for campaigning against oil drilling in Alaska, has a solar home and drives a Prius... ...Sitcom star Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her husband, writer/producer Brad Hall, have been environmentalists for years... ...Cate Blanchett's Sydney home is solar-powered... ...Former Agent 007 Pierce Brosnan has been active in environmental causes for years... ...Edward Norton, who grew up with environmentalist parents [ed. note: a so-called "Green Diaper Baby"], has taken eco-consciousness from his solar home to the homes of others by spreading the word among other actors...

WTF: ADL's "No Place for Hate" campaign

Via this we learn that the Anti-Defamation League has been conducting a "No Place for Hate" campaign in New England with the Massachusetts Municipal Association since 1999 [1]. Cities in New England and elsewhere can join the program ([2][3][4]), and, as long as they conduct three events designed to show they're free of hate and that they respect diversity, they get a nifty sign that they can attach to a post (not provided) at the entrance to their town. Of course, as the second link above shows, the ADL has a rather flexible definition of "hate", with one required to support illegal immigration in order to rid oneself of all vestiges of "hate".

Campaigns like this are an attempt to enforce far-left ideology, and their effectiveness can be seen from the news story:
When Ralph Filicchia came across a "No Place for Hate" sign on a pole outside Town Hall, he was, to put it in his own words "offended."

On Tuesday, he came before the council with a message and a plea to take down the sign and rescind a Town Council proclamation honoring Watertown as a "No Place for Hate" community.

"The proclamation is discriminatory and a violation and infringement upon my civil rights as an American citizen," he said. "I want the right to speak out without being guilty of a hate crime."
Such campaigns are designed to make one wonder what exactly Filicchia could object to. Is he a... hater? Is he a... racist? There isn't that much difference between this and cities that would declare themselves to be "No Place for Satan", then define or imply that all those who aren't fundamentalist Christians are Satanists.

Note that the ADL has a related "Communities of Respect" program (both NPFH and COR are trademarked by the way). Sugar Land, Texas was the latest to be converted, including asking his residents to sign an oversized "Resolution of Respect." [5] Earlier, a "Rally for Respect" was held; choose 'view image' on the center picture to see schoolkids holding up "Respect" signs. [6]

Professor sends link to Pat Buchanan website, gets put on leave

But, it wasn't just any old link:
The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) has placed a professor on forced administrative leave and has recommended that he be terminated for e-mailing a Thanksgiving message to his colleagues last November. On the day before Thanksgiving, Professor Walter Kehowski sent out the text of George Washington's "Thanksgiving Day Proclamation of 1789" and a link to the webpage where he'd found it—on Pat Buchanan's web log. After several recipients complained of being offended by the e-mail, MCCCD found Kehowski guilty of violating the district's Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policy and technology usage standards. Kehowski then contacted the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) for help...

...On November 22, 2006, tenured mathematics professor Walter Kehowski at Glendale Community College—part of the MCCCD system—sent an e-mail containing Washington's "Thanksgiving Day Proclamation of 1789" to all MCCCD employees using a district-wide listserv designated for "announcements." Within weeks, five MCCCD employees filed harassment charges against Kehowski, claiming his message was "hostile" and "derogatory" because it contained a link to Buchanan's website, where the conservative Buchanan had also posted his criticisms of immigration policies.
Feel free to contact them and let them know what you think:

Andrew Sullivan Syndrome (Don Imus)

Regarding the Don Imus matter, Andrew Sullivan says:

...Punishing someone for calling college women "whores" - especially those who have beaten the odds and are role models for other back girls and women - is not a new step in political correctness. It's applying a very old American standard of fairness and decency, which now applies to all Americans, regardless of race or gender. This was the voice of mainstream America speaking...

And, in this post he prints a letter from a reader implying that those concerned about double-standards do so because they want to use the "n-word".

Obviously, the letter writer has made an obvious error, which Sully - oddly enough - either didn't notice or didn't think his readers would. Namely, perhaps the issue is not so much that they want to use the "n-word", but that they wonder why the same punishment meted out to errant white people is not meted out to the endless string of blacks and Hispanics who've said far worse things than what Imus did.

Just as obviously, the Sully's "standard of fairness and decency" do not apply to errant People of Color. If they did, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been driven from public life years ago.

For another example, the chairman of the California Democratic Party (Art Torres) said this in the 90s:

"[Proposition] 187 was the last gasp of white America in California."

If he said that today, would he be Imus'ed? I highly doubt it. The media would cover it up and if that didn't work they'd try to downplay it.

Torres even has a bit of an Imus connection; currently at cadem.org we read the following:

Imus Off The Air... Thank you to the thousands of Americans who spoke out! Because so many people expressed their outrage by taking action, such as signing our boycott petition, CBS has fired Don Imus, sending the strongest possible message that demeaning any group in the name of entertainment will not be tolerated.

Chairman Torres would like to share this letter of thanks he received from Elizabeth Badger-Bartels, CEO/Founder of the Minority Outreach Committee.

I'm sure Sully's "standard of fairness and decency" will apply the next time a Democrat, "liberal", or leftist says something far worse than anything Imus ever said.

How to be a Gramscian in fifty easy links (race awareness, anti-racist, etc. etc.)

Would you too like to increase your race awareness and work on your anti-racist viewpoint while at the same time learning about transracialism, white privilege and Oppression?

I knew you would! That's why I recommend visiting this page and following all the links at the "super-sized link post" from the "10th Erase Racism Carnival": blogher.org/node/16991

Your host is the fetching Carmen Van Kerckhove, who's the co-founder and president of New Demographic (newdemographic.com), "an anti-racism training company that goes beyond diversity buzzwords to tackle the real issues behind race and racism.". She podcasts at "Addicted to Race", and her other sites include "Racialicious", "Anti-Racist Parent", and "Race Changers".

Now, I'd like you to express how much you hate racism. Let it all out! Stamp out that racism! Spend a good two minutes doing that.

Tennie Pierce Part 2: supervisors sue city

Tennie Pierce is the black firefighter who sued Los Angeles for racial discrimination. As a prank, fellow firemen put some dog food in his spaghetti and he ate two bites of it. For that, the L.A. City Council voted to give him $2.7 million. Oh, and by the way: at the time he didn't think it was racial, he'd played several pranks on other firefighters, and his nickname was "Big Dog".

The Council backtracked after bad publicity and has since hired outside lawyers to fight Pierce's suit. The original settlement was "negotiated" by City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo; the outside lawyers could cost as much as $750,000.

Now, Eric Leonard (no permalink) says:
Two Los Angeles City Fire Department captains accused of racial harassment by firefighter Tennie Pierce have filed a reverse racial discrimination lawsuit against the City accusing fire department administrators of unfairly punishing them.

Court documents filed jointly by captains Chris Burton and John Tohill say they were suspended and transferred without due process after Pierce accused them of taking part in a fire station prank in October, 2004...

Burton says he was summarily demoted, transferred, and suspended for 30 days and says despite his request for an, "advocate investigation," of the discipline, no formal investigation of the Pierce incident or Burton's discipline was ever conducted by the fire department.

Tohill says he was suspended for 24 days and transferred, again, he says, without a formal investigation.

The Hispanic firefighter who put the dog food in Pierce's spaghetti was suspended for only six days, they say...

Congressional White Caucus: for whites only

From this:
Freshman Rep. Stephen I. Cohen, D-Tenn., is not joining the Congressional White Caucus after several current and former members made it clear that a black lawmaker was not welcome.

"I think they're real happy I'm not going to join," said Cohen, who succeeded Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., in a majority-white Memphis district. "It's their caucus and they do things their way. You don't force your way in. You need to be invited."

Cohen said he became convinced that joining the caucus would be "a social faux pas" after seeing news reports that former Rep. William Lacy Clay Sr., D-Mo., a co-founder of the caucus, had circulated a memo telling members it was "critical" that the group remain "exclusively European-American."

...The bylaws of the caucus do not make race a prerequisite for membership, a House aide said, but no non-white member has ever joined.

Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., who is black, tried in 1975 when he was a sophomore representative and the group was only 6 years old...

BNP Ballerina taunted: "many more of us than you"

The case of the BNP Ballerina (England's Simone Clarke) spins and twirls, with this column defending her political rights and discussing a protest by far-lefties at one of her performances:

Despite her fear of mass immigration, Clarke has an immigrant boyfriend of Chinese-Cuban descent, also a dancer; there is a hint of inconsistency here surely, and the BNP certainly finds it a touch embarrassing. And then the protesters in the street [presumably Unite Against Fascism activists], who say that ethnic English people's fear of immigration is nothing but irrational racism, rather undermined their own case by shouting "We are Muslim, black and Jew, there are many more of us than you" — by this threat confirming that a fear of mass immigration is not merely irrational racism. Brilliant.

"BNP ballerina" blitzed by Gramscian goons

Ballerina Simone Clarke of the English National Ballet is coming under a large amount of fire from a small number of sources due to her membership in the British National Party (BNP). The Guardian, other papers, and the Gramscian establishment are trying to get her fired over her private political views.

That party is apparently "far right", in the law & order, isolationism, halting all immigration and so forth sense. The elites of England might be attempting to misrepresent them, but there's a good chance they're a bit closer to thugs in suits. Sorting that out is left to the English, but they are apparently a legal political party.

A seven-month long undercover "investigation" by the Guardian's Ian Cobain resulted in an article with nothing overly shocking ("Exclusive: inside the secret and sinister world of the BNP", link; there may be more in their print edition). That 12/21 article is where it was revealed that Clarke was a member.

She refused comment except to give one interview, which I believe was in 12/30's "The BNP Ballerina" by Elizabeth Sanderson (link). In that she said she's been a member for 18 months.

To recap: she's been a member for a long time, her membership was only revealed after an undercover investigation, and she gave one interview attempting to explain why she was a member.

With that in mind, now comes al-Guardian again with 1/1's "BNP ballerina defies rising clamour to sack her" (link):

The interview has caused fresh difficulties for the ENB, which was able to deflect criticism about Clarke's BNP membership by insisting that her stance was an entirely private one. The company, which is publicly funded and is therefore obliged by the Race Relations Act of 2000 to promote good race relations, will be asked to explain how one of its highest profile employees was able to use her position as a platform for the far right party.

Obviously, the Guardian is engaging in their own form of thuggery, since she wasn't using "her position as a platform" and if the Guardian had not revealed her membership no one might have known about it. And, they're attempting to use state power to enforce their own far-left Gramscian viewpoint and punish someone for their heretofore private membership in a legal political party. Their attempts are as transparently fake as this photo of her in front of Buckingham Palace.

Only four voices in the "rising clamour" are quoted, one anonymously. Lee Jasper, "equalities director for the mayor of London and chairman of the National Assembly Against Racism" thinks "she should be sacked". Inayat Bunglawala from the Muslim Council of Britain thinks she's abusing her position. Jon Cruddas, "Labour MP for Dagenham in east London" thinks she's ignoring the BNP's "underbelly".

And:

A spokeswoman for the Commission for Racial Equality, which polices race relations legislation, said it was monitoring events. "We will be interested to see what action the ENB takes given that it has a member expressing such views in public."

Apparently there as here the major political parties support massive immigration - legal and illegal - even if some may talk a good game. And, apparently the BNP is the only party willing to go against the Gramscian flow. And, presumably many or most Britons oppose those policies imposed on them by the elites. It shouldn't be surprising that some would seek an alternative and that the elites would attempt to punish those who get involved with that alternative.

"Jane Elliott and her Blue-Eyed Devil Children"

From this:
Why does racial diversity training, whose deleterious effects have been chronicled in these pages more than once, seem like a children's group exercise, a sadist's version of "patty cake, patty cake, baker's man?" There's a good reason: It is a children's exercise. At least that's how it began and operated for many years until the pillars of our society became convinced of its necessity. We have a retired school teacher named Jane Elliott to thank for the leftward infantilizing of the American mind...

...Jane Elliott is our nation's long-reigning Dominatrix of Diversity. For nearly 40 years this native of rural Iowa has been engaged in a Torquemada-style quest to eradicate racism, real or imagined, from every nook and cranny of American life. She casts a mighty long shadow. Every time a corporation forces new employees – at least Caucasian ones – to endure intensive and prolonged anti-bias training, it is ratifying the legacy of Jane Elliott. Every time a college requires incoming white freshmen to be "cured" of racial, ethnic and religious prejudices presumably lurking within, it is fulfilling Elliott's vision...

Airstrip One: veiled Muslim woman to give Christmas speech on UK's Channel 4

Channel 4 is a "publicly-owned not-for-profit broadcaster" out of the UK. Since 1993 they've been offering an alternative to the Queen's XMas speech, and this year will feature a veiled Muslim woman:
[Khadija... a freelance lecturer in Islamic studies and the Koran... and a Zimbabwean-born British citizen], who has been wearing the full veil - or niqab - for 10 years, has been given the slot.

The message will reflect a year in which the wearing of religious clothing and symbols have "dominated the news agenda", said a Channel 4 spokesman.

...The right to wear the niqab made the headlines earlier this year when the Leader of the House of Commons, Jack Straw, said that it hindered communication.

The niqab - Arabic for "full veil" - means covering up completely, including gloves and a face covering which leaves just a slit for the eyes.

Channel 4's spokesman also said that the controversy has "generated a debate about multiculturalism, secularism and integration - a debate in which British Muslims have played a key role and one that will shape the future of British society".

Infiltrator watch: DailyKos meets sharia law

The DailyKos user "cador" continues his trolling of DailyKos with this (warning: pics posted in comments NSFW):
One of the many benefits of immigration is the fact that we can adopt many non-Western concepts of law and justice which are much more progressive than traditionally oppressive, patriarchal, racist and sexist European laws...

[quotes from "Sharia law is spreading as authority wanes"]

...Let us replace the tyranny of Pat Robertson and the Religious REICH with the freedom-giving Sharia law which is known to be tolerant of womyn's rights and the GLBT community. Pym Fortuyn would certainly approve.

Although we here at the kos community have many misgivings about the Resident-in-Thief, George "DUMBYA" Bush, we should urge the newly elected Democratic Congress to implement his guest worker program so that we can bring in many more immigrants to enrich and improve our culture...

Tookie Williams... the stage play!

On December 12, a group of actors and activists will be reenacting the events leading up to the execution of gang co-founder Tookie Williams. The stage play will be performed in Berkeley, California, and a troupe of actors will reenact the fateful 1979 evening during which he shotgunned four innocent victims to death, terrorizing South Central L.A. and later resulting in his lengthy imprisonment.

Just kidding.

Actually:
The Black Repertory Group will re-enact the execution of Crips co-founder and murderer Stanley Tookie Williams to mark the one-year anniversary of the former gang leader's death by lethal injection.

Williams' longtime friend and co-author Barbara Becnel and Shirley Neal, a vice president at The Africa Channel, are co-producing the Dec. 12 event to show what they witnessed as "dramatic and horrific."

"This is what the state of California is doing in the name of its people," Becnel told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "We were there. We saw it. Now we want the public to see what we saw."

Happy International Day for Tolerance!

Today is the United Nation's "International Day for Tolerance". Obviously, anyone who's against such a day is - by definition - intolerant. And, intolerance has no place here or elsewhere, and will be extirpated as soon as it is spotted. As Our Leader Kofi Annan is fond of saying, "in our globalizing world, tolerance is more essential than ever."

This site would like to stress that our Mission Statement - as approved by a plenary of our member states - has issued its complete support for this Day, and that the only thing we're intolerant of... is intolerance! And, mean people.

This site is also working with NGO (non-governmental organizations), political officials, cultural leaders, and other interested parties to ensure that all persons celebrate this day fully. We are currently working to ensure that school curricula throughout the World teach the principles of Tolerance, observe this day as the landmark in Human History that it is, and require all schoolchildren to recite the Pledge of Tolerance every day.

We encourage every Person to print out and keep in their wallet, purse, satchel, kilt bag, fanny pack, or similar ethno-cultural-specific container the thoughts of St. Maarten Cultural Affairs Commissioner Louie Laveist:

"I am very concerned with global trends in the rise of intolerance, extremism and racism... Our island nation is a multicultural society which makes us rich due to this diversity. Each and everyone who has made St. Maarten their home must strive to uphold the principles of tolerance, pluralism and mutual respect for a peaceful coexistence. Those who are not able to abide by the aforementioned have no place in our homeland."

Now, let us sing.

Academic McCarthyism from the SPLC?

Say it ain't so! However, consider the case of Kevin MacDonald, a Professor of Psychology at California State University–Long Beach. If he didn't have tenure he'd probably be looking for another job, because the Southern Poverty Law Center has mounted a vigorous campaign against him which appears to be all or almost all based on smears. (The SPLC is also indirectly linked to the Mexican government and is also involved in a Georgia lawsuit which would have the effect of helping Mexico send us more of their citizens.)

For the shortest possible summary of this case, take a look at the section concerning MacDonald from the "Thirteen Scariest People in America" (alternet.org/story/43586); that section was written by two people from the SPLC. Then, take a look at Kevin MacDonald's rebuttal. Then, for the longer version, see "Heidi Does Long Beach: The SPLC vs. Academic Freedom".

If you see any MSM sources presenting the SPLC as a trustworthy source, please at least send them the first link and suggest they do a bit more research.

Kweisi Mfume: "right people" needed for Maryland

It wasn't too many decades ago when "the right kind of people" was a racist code word. Guess what? It still is. In Maryland, Democrat Rep. Ben Cardin (white) won his Senate seat against Michael Steele (black). In the primary, Cardin beat former NAACP president Kweisi Mfume.

Now:

Saying Maryland Democratic leaders must do more to encourage black candidates so "we do not have another Michael Steele problem," Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean on Thursday criticized the state party's lack of diversity on its recent winning tickets...

Mfume doesn't think he got as much support as he could have, and says:

"I agree with [Chairman Gov. Dr. Howard Dean M.D.], and we're all Democrats who believe more than anything else that the Democratic Party really holds the best hope for that kind of racial and gender diversity... At the same time it's not enough to just get people in the process. They really do have to be the right people who really do care about the communities in this state."

Translating that into Alabama-in-the-50s-speak is left as an exercise.

Firefighter eats dog food, gets $2.7 million

From this:
A black firefighter who was served dog food in his spaghetti by fellow firefighters will be paid more than $2.7 million to settle a lawsuit alleging racial harassment within the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The award, approved on an 11-1 vote Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council, is the latest in a recent string of settlements of lawsuits by firefighters claiming discrimination and harassment and retaliation against those who complain.

...Firefighter Tennie Pierce, 51, alleged in his lawsuit that Firefighter Jorge Arevalo mixed canned dog food into Pierce's dinner at their Westchester station two years ago; that Capt. John Tohill purchased the dog food; and that Capt. Chris Burton knew about the prank but didn't warn Pierce. All three men were present when Pierce ate the dog food.

Pierce "took a large bite, at which time he noticed the other firefighters were laughing and making noises," the lawsuit says. He took a second bite, then demanded to know what was in his food, "but no one would tell him." Pierce then left the kitchen "with his co-workers laughing at him."

A Fire Department investigation suggested the incident was intended to "humble" Pierce — who stands 6 feet 5 — after his team won a fire station volleyball game. A lawyer for one of the defendants initially called the incident "a good-natured prank ... [not] in any way motivated by race."

But a UC Santa Cruz professor who was hired by Pierce's attorney to review department records of discrimination complaints said the prank was clearly intended to "humiliate and dehumanize" Pierce.

"The association of a black man and dog food resonates with the deep historical roots of slavery and the corresponding dehumanization," said sociologist David Wellman [bio], co-author of "Whitewashing Race: Colorblind Policies in a Color Conscious America."
One would think if there were any specific association between African-Americans and dog food you'd be able to find it within the first 100 searches. The "expert witness'" stated speciality is finding "hidden" (white) racism, which is reminiscent of witch hunters using various clues to find witches.

The only Councilpersonage voting against the award was Dennis Zine. John and Ken of KFI will be leading a campaign to send cans of dog food to the other 11 Councilbeings who voted for the award.

England: Town council bans use of phrase "political correctness"

Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire (somewhere in England) has or had a 44-page booklet for their employees containing various far-left Gramscian suggestions, including a section banning the use of the phrase "political correctness". I couldn't find it on their site, and the new head of the council says they're no longer using it, but it does help illustrate Britain's slow Orwellian slide:
It states:'Political correctness is often used to describe what some of us think are unnecessary changes which don't really bother anyone.

'The term political correctness was coined in 1988 by John O'Sullivan III, who was a member of the Ku Klux Klan. He was making an after dinner speech complaining about how Black Americans were being allowed to take the jobs traditionally reserved for the white majority because of a wave of political correctness.

'Since then the phrase political correctness has almost universally been used to decry changes which aim to prevent offensive behaviour.'

It goes on to say because this takes the form of 'blaming the victim, denying peoples experience or expressing the view of a popular majority,' using the phrase can represent a 'physical attack.'
Other suggestions from the booklet at the link, such as their opposition to -man words like "policeman."

Note that a customer service satisfaction survey of a sort contains several complaints about political correctness:

UK: Hardline Muslim teacher now national school inspector

From this:
A hardline Muslim teacher who caused a furore by denouncing pupils for celebrating Christmas [at Washwood Heath Secondary School in Birmingham] has been made a Government schools inspector.

Israr Khan's Ofsted appointment was described by a former colleague as 'absolutely astonishing'...

...It has been claimed that Washwood Heath school was then a 'hotbed of Islamic fundamentalism'. Rashid Rauf - the airline terror bomb suspect whose extradition is currently being sought from Pakistan - was a pupil there at that time...

The "Strategic Plan to Foster Immigration to Francophone Minority Communities"

Or: When your country isn't divided enough, double down.

From this:
The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, along with the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of International Cooperation and Minister for La Francophonie and Official Languages, today launched the Strategic Plan to Foster Immigration to Francophone Minority Communities. The five year plan seeks to increase immigration of French-speaking people to Francophone communities, and to help them to settle in their new surroundings.

"Immigration is a key factor in the growth and vitality of Francophone communities outside of Quebec," said Minister Solberg."Our government plans to attract more French-speaking immigrants to these communities and to work with our partners to help newcomers succeed."

"By participating in the implementation of the Strategic Plan to Foster Immigration to Francophone Minority Communities, our new Government contributes directly to Canada's linguistic duality and to the vitality of our country's Francophone communities," said Minister Verner...
I've only been to Canada twice, and both times it was like visiting a foreign country. So, I'm no expert. But, it seems to me like they're encouraging "internal" migration from Quebec to other parts of Canada and not migration from, say, France to Canada. One wonders, besides trying to provide yet more evidence that multiculturalism is a failed ideology, what they're trying to do. Is it a desire for cheap laborers? Are they trying to disperse language police throughout the country instead of just having them in certain parts? Perhaps a Canadian expert can tell us what's really involved here.

Most hate crime victims are young, poor, and white

WASHINGTON – The most likely victim of a hate crime in the U.S. is a poor, young, white, single urban dweller, according to an analysis of Justice Department statistics collected from between July 2000 and December 2003.

A November report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics detailing a study of 210,000 "hate crimes" a year during that period has gone virtually unreported by the U.S. press.

But it does contain some surprising numbers. While race is, by far, the No. 1 factor cited as the reason for hate crimes, blacks are slightly less likely to be victims and far more likely to be perpetrators, the statistics show...

Pacific News Service: "Tired of the White Left"

It takes the Pacific News Service to feature a column called "Tired of the White Left":
Editor's Note: NAM contributor Roberto Lovato is attending the World Social Forum in Caracas, where more than 60,000 people, half of them from outside Venezuela, have gathered for the annual event. His impressions will be posted throughout the week.

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Standing proudly beneath the statue of Latin American liberator, Simon Bolivar, located at the center of a Caracas plaza, World Social Forum delegate Dorothea Manuela says she feels more at home here than she does standing near the statues of dead white revolutionary men dotting parks back home in Boston.

"It's inspiring to come here and see people from all over the world leading their own struggles," she says. I ask her about the leadership of struggles in the United States and the beaming smile of the self-described "black woman who is ethnically Puerto Rican" disappears.

"Being here reminds me how very important it is for all of us to change the U.S. But we can't change the U.S. unless we all deal with the white left's racism and privilege" says the statuesque "fifty plus" Manuela. Along with members of her Boston-based Rosa Parks Coalition, Manuela and many of the World Social Forum delegation from the U.S. are delivering a strong message to the thousands attending the global gathering: We (nonwhites/people of color) can lead ourselves. Whites do not speak for all of us...

...The racial dynamics at the Foro seem more like the dynamics on the field of the World Cup, where the non-white majority exercise leadership concomitant with their numbers, while whites have their place too. The tenor here touches on a shift in the way movements have historically been carried out in the U.S. "Why don't they come here to Latin America to lead struggles here?" asks Dorothea Manuela. "Because they know they can't. Why do they lead struggles in places where they are now a minority? Because we let them – and that has to change. That will change."

Another World Is Possible.
How sad. But, I guess if the white left revolutionary vanguard is of the wrong color than new leaders of the proper color must be found. It's time they knew their place. I guess Katrina vanden Heuvel will have to find a new proletariat to champion.

In other sad news, we learn that, supposedly, no one talked to Cindy Sheehan at an event at which she had supposedly received top billing.

Bellwood, IL: school kids beat up UPS driver

A UPS driver was beaten up by 15 to 20 school-age kids who surrounded his vehicle in Bellwood Illinois. Video at the link. They apparently came from a nearby middle school. Are we Brazil yet?

The driver appears to be white, and based on the demographics there's an 80% chance that the perps were black.

Your assignment:
1. Spot the first "liberal" who claims the driver had it coming.
2. Spot the first "liberal" who claims the perps are just misunderstood.
3. Assuming my presumption above is correct, spot all the "liberals" who will not even consider this to have been a hate crime, but who would have rushed to call it that if the (presumed) races were reversed.

Ex-ACLU attorney: Group 'terrorizing' U.S.

From this:
An attorney who once worked for the American Civil Liberties Union has slammed the organization for "perverting" federal law by successfully threatening government officials into getting rid of public expressions of religion.

Rees Lloyd made the comments in an online podcast hosted by Rep. John Hostettler, R-Ind., in which the two discuss the congressman's legislation, the Public Expression of Religion Act, or PERA (H.R.2679). The bill would prohibit judges in civil suits involving the First Amendment's Establishment Clause from awarding attorney's fees to those offended by religious symbols or actions in the public square – such as a Ten Commandments display in a courthouse or a cross on a county seal...

"They use this statute to extort behavior out of individuals," the congressman said, citing the Indiana Civil Liberties Union threatening local educators. The group sent a letter to officials saying they would be sued and be forced to pay attorney's fees should any graduation prayers be offered at commencement ceremonies. The threat sent the message, Hostettler said, that individuals tied to school districts could be impoverished personally...

The congressman wonders why the ACLU would oppose his legislation since it still provides for "injunctive relief" – e.g., a court can rule in the ACLU's favor and force the removal of a Ten Commandments display – but takes out the monetary incentive for lawsuits.

"If they're not out for the money but are really out to preserve our civil liberties … then the ACLU should not be opposing my bill," Hostettler commented...

"Police tell Christian couple view on gays 'close to hate crime'"

From England, Land of Orwell, comes yet another disturbing story about "liberalism" run amok.
POLICE questioned a retired couple for 80 minutes about their "homophobic" views after they asked their local council if they could display their Christian literature next to gay rights leaflets, it was reported last night.

Joe and Helen Roberts said that police officers warned them that their actions "were close to a hate crime" after they complained to Wyre Borough Council about its gay rights policies.

The couple claimed that the police told them they were "walking on eggshells".

Mr Roberts, from Fleetwood, Lancashire, said he had been offended because of the council's distribution of the gay rights leaflets and its promotion of its theatre as a venue for civil partnership ceremonies.

He said he complained to Paul Deacon, the council officer responsible for Wyre's part in the Navajo Charter Mark campaign being run by several local authorities to offer assistance to gay and lesbian people.

Mr Roberts, 73, told the Daily Mail: "I told him I was offended. I asked him if I could put Christian literature on display alongside the gay material. He said I couldn't because it would offend gay people.

"I said we had no objection to gay people, but we thought that homosexual practice was wrong and we were offended by the gay culture which the council is promoting.

"They warned me that being discriminatory and homophobic is in line with hate crime. The phrase they used was that we were 'walking on eggshells'. I asked the officer, if I phoned the police with a complaint that the council were discriminating against Christians would he go to interview them?"

Lancashire police said its visit to the Robertses' family home was a matter of routine after a complaint from the council. A spokesman added: "Words of suitable advice were given and we will not be taking any further action."

Examples of PBS's "liberal" propaganda

Is the Associated Press a trustworthy source?

Look at the following screengrab of an AP report reprinted at WRAL and let me know:

can you trust the associated press

At post time, the headline is "White Supremacists Riot In Toledo, Ohio", and the first paragraph is:

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Protesters at a white supremacists' march threw rocks at police, vandalized vehicles and stores and cursed the mayor for allowing the event.

If you read the link, you'll see that the rest of the story directly contradicts the headline: it was the presumably all or mostly all black residents who rioted, not the Nazis. There were reportedly 600 or more people in the crowd, including an unstated number of rioters. However, there were at "least two dozen" Nazis, and the article doesn't report them rioting.

And, this is clearly an AP-supplied headline: the exact same headline and first paragraph appears here and here. ABC even publishes what appears to be an earlier-posted version of the same article here (note the lower ID number); the only difference is that the headline of that is "Emergency Declared After Anti-Nazi Riots".

And, note that the questionably-headlined ABC report even has a subtitle of "Mayor of Toledo, Ohio, Declares Emergency, Sets Curfew After Hundreds of White Supremacists Riot".

I sent an email to feedback *at* ap.org asking them how they could make this mistake and I'll update this report in the unlikely event I get a response.

While no one wants to defend Nazis, everyone needs to defend their right to peaceably assemble. If someone isn't going to do that, perhaps they should consider their citizenship options.

I believe the problem here is that the AP wants First Amendment protections for themselves, but isn't willing to extend that right to others with whom they disagree. Perhaps the AP as well as the residents of Toledo should attend the same Remedial Constitution class.

When race-baiting goes awry

ABC is broadcasting some shows with an additional Spanish-language audio track available through the SAP channel. That's caused some people to complain, and, of course, professional Hispanics have a response. A column by one Roger Hernandez displays some of the anti- response in order to make a point. Of course, trying to use a few quotes in order to portray all opponents in a bad light is fallacious reasoning, but it's all Hernandez has at his disposal:

"There's nothing like aiding and abetting the detioration (sic) of American civialization (sic) than promoting a freakin' (sic) prime-time foreign language," wrote one poster at right-wing cyber-rag FreeRepublic.com, in a language with a grammatical structure and spelling system not entirely the same as English's.

Those wacky FReepers. Or, actually, one FReeper who can't spel that gud.

Said someone else at Drudge Report: "Speak english (sic) or sink to the bottom. Tolerance has gotten us into the mess we are in - it will take big dose of intolerance to get us out."

Now, here's where it begins to go awry, as you no doubt have figured out already. As you know, Brother Matt does not have a forum or comments. In fact, our fallacious reasoner is referring to this thread at the Drudge Retort. Has he been reading drudge.com all this time, thinking that it was that Drudge Report he'd heard about?

One consistent theme revealed the influence of the My-Ancestors-Learned-Why-Don't-Yours school of American history. "When my parents came to this country, they expected to learn English. They expected me to learn English. They didn't expect people to print government forms, building signs, etc. in Yiddish." Wonder what that descendant of Yiddish-speakers thinks of an ideological ally in the same forum who had the following succinct explanation for the evil of Spanish on American TV: "ABC OWNED BY JEWS. End of story!"

Oddly enough, I was unable to find that comment on that Drudge Retort page. The only thing I found through google was this from 7/29/05:

ABC owned by Jews, just like everything TV. End of Story.

Gosh, that's odd.

"Final solution" on CSPAN Million Man March coverage; DUmmies defend Farrakhan

The unverified report here discusses a CSPAN broadcast from 10/14/05 entitled "Hurricane Katrina & Issues Facing African Americans." It was part of their Million Man March coverage.

One of the speakers on CSPAN (Kamau Kambon, author and owner of Blacknificent Books) reportedly said this, according to the rough transcript at the link:

"Now how do I know that the white people know that we are going to come up with a solution to the problem. I know it because they have retina scans, racial profiling, DNA banks, and they’re monitoring our people to try to prevent the ONE person from coming up with the ONE idea. And the one idea is, how we are going to exterminate white people because that in my estimation is the only conclusion I have come to. We have to exterminate white people off the face of the planet to solve the problem. *tepid applause* Now I don’t care whether you clap or not but I’m saying to you that we need to solve this problem because they are going to kill us. And I will leave on that. So we just have to set up our own system and stop playing and get very serious and not get diverted from coming up with a solution to the problem and the problem on the planet is white people."

Discussing this AP report of the March itself (which doesn't mention the above remarks), the DUmmies do an intricate but most unsubtle dance around "liberal" racism, including this:

99% of what was said by Farrakan today I have read at DU in many threads.

Of that I have no doubt.

Massachusetts Public Schools Requiring Teachers to Wear "Gay and Lesbian Coming Out Day" support Ribbons?

October 11 was "Gay and Lesbian Coming Out Day". According to this second-hand report from a hitherto unknown site:

My friend -- who works as a "permanent substitute teacher" -- was presented with her ribbon upon reporting to school yesterday and "strongly urged" to wear it.

If confirmed, this could be dynamite! Except, of course, it would all be explained away and ignored by the MSM.

"How does it feel to be a black guy that can swim?"

Here's an essay on "liberal" hypocrisy:
...The cover of last March's Sports Illustrated on Campus featured a picture of Eastern Michigan basketball player Henry Bekkering with a caption that read, "How does it feel to be a white guy with hops?"

...And what else would you expect? Everyone knows white kids can't play.

But imagine if the cover had featured something equally as stereotypical about another race.

What if MAAC Diver of the Year Chris Coles were featured on the cover with the caption, "How does it feel to be a black guy that can swim?"

Or Dallas Cowboys linebacker Dat Nguyen asking, "How does it feel to be a yellow guy that can tackle?"

Or what if PGA star Vijay Singh were on the cover and the caption read, "How does it feel to be a red guy that can drive a golf ball 300 yards?"

After his mandatory racial-sensitivity training course, the editor of the magazine would be looking for a new job tomorrow.

But it's all fun and games as long as it's white guys we are talking about.

Sometimes, the blind eye we turn to racist comments about white people isn't quite so innocent, however...

Oklahoman brings kids to Brooklyn to experience "diversity"; kids beaten, called "cracker"

I'm sure you could have seen that coming from a mile away, and the NYDN has the details here (or here):
City education officials are investigating the claims of a pair of boys from Oklahoma who moved to Brooklyn to experience diversity, and instead say they got schooled in racism and violence.

Mom Lisa Brown, 33, told the Daily News she relocated her family from their small Oklahoma town so her husband, a Brooklyn native and social worker, could more easily find work and her sons could experience different people and ways of life.

Brown enrolled her sons, Sloan, 12, and J.T., 13, at Ebbets Field Middle School in Crown Heights. But when the boys, who are white, showed up, their mom said, they got a chilling indication of what was to come.

"Oh my gosh, we are going to have fun this year," a security guard muttered, according to Brown.

Things quickly got worse.

Sloan was beaten mercilessly, called "cracker" and "white boy," and chased into traffic by his new classmates, his family said...
You won't believe what happened next! Oh, sorry, I forgot you're familiar with "multiculturalism". Yes, you're right. The school officials did nothing until this got press attention. And, none of NYC's "civil rights" or "human rights" organizations are involved. And, yes, the victims will eventually be blamed and perhaps even called "racists". And, of course, this whole story will fall down the "liberal" memory hole since, well, see, it's like this...

Put a fork in England, it's done

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British prison officers who wore a St. George's Cross tie-pin have been ticked off by the jails watchdog over concerns about the symbol's racist connotations.

The pins showing the English flag -- which has often raised hackles due to its connection with the Crusades of the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries -- could be "misconstrued," Chief Inspector of Prisons Anne Owers said in a section on race in a report on a jail in the northern English city of Wakefield.

The banner of St. George, the red cross of a martyr on a white background, was adopted for the uniform of English soldiers during the military expeditions by European powers to recapture the Holy Land from Muslims, and later became the national flag of England.

A section on race relations in Owers' report said: "We were concerned to see a number of staff wearing a flag of St. George tie-pin.

"While we were told that these had been bought in support of a cancer charity there was clear scope for misinterpretation, and Prison Service Orders made clear that unauthorized badges and pins should not be worn."

As one of her formal recommendations Owers said: "Staff should not wear unauthorized badges or pins..."

Oz: Uni appoints "Heterosexuality Officer"

The University of New England in Australia (huh?) has appointed law student Dave Allen to be their new "Heterosexuality Officer". Even in an Oddly Enough report, the AP can't help but show their biases:
He's a little vague on what his official duties will be. But it looks like the student association is trying to make a point about gay rights and supposed special treatment for homosexual students.

Allen says he has nothing against gays. He tells The Australian newspaper they should come down to the local pub and have a few beers with him.

African-American Rep. wants to join Tennessee's White Caucus

This article is extremely shocking:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A black Tennessee lawmaker lamenting his exclusion from the state's White Legislative Caucus claimed Tuesday the group was less accommodating that even the Nation of Islam.

"My understanding is that the NoI doesn't even ban members by race," said Rep. Stacey Campfield, adding that the NoI "has less racist bylaws" than the white lawmakers' group.

The freshman Democrat from Knoxville was rebuffed earlier this year when he asked for the White Caucus' bylaws and inquired about joining. There are 18 white state lawmakers in Tennessee.

Caucus chairman Rep. Johnny Shaw, a Republican, dismissed Campfield's request and called him a "strange guy" who was simply interested in stirring up trouble.

"He is using this as a joke. This is an insult coming from him," said caucus member Rep. Larry Miller, also a Republican. "Why he chose to focus on the White Caucus, I have no idea other than he is crazy and a racist."
If you've heard of this story, you'll notice that I switched things around above. Rep. Stacey Campfield is actually white, and he inquired about the bylaws of TN's Black Caucus. That prompted the expected "liberal" reaction.

For instance, the WaPo prints the above modified AP article by Matt Gouras under "White Lawmaker Likens Black Colleagues, KKK". And, Gouras turned to a usual suspect to provide more smears:
Experts on race and hate groups said Campfield hit a nerve when he used King's words to take on a black institution. It's the same tactic white separatists often use, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center.

"Very typically these days we see white supremacists, hate groups, trying to use the words of King and other civil rights leaders to try to advance their agendas," Potok said.
Question "liberal" racism, get called a racist. Not only that, but on his blog he says he's received threats of violence. Ah, the peace-loving, non-racist left.

Let's take a look at an earlier AP report, here under "White lawmaker 'just curious' about joining Black Caucus":
...As he was talking to [Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Johnny Shaw] about these questions, the possibility of Campfield joining the Black Caucus came up.

By Campfield's account, Shaw was against it.

"I said, 'Why?' and he said, 'Because you're white.' I thought, 'What? Whoa!' " Campfield said...

...Shaw said he thought Campfield had brought up the possibility of membership in the Black Caucus in "a kidding sort of way."

"He's an oddball, and I didn't take him seriously," Shaw said. "I felt like he was trying to do something that was, well, not good."

"We don't have anything going on in the Black Caucus that anyone wants to hide. There's nothing out of the ordinary in the bylaws," Shaw said. "We are strictly legit and up front."

The bylaws [provided to the reporter but not to Campfield] say, "The regular membership shall consist of those black elected officials serving in the state Senate and House of Representatives."

Another provision says that "honorary membership" can be granted to "those persons whose belief and actions contribute to the purpose for which this caucus was formed."

"We still want to make sure the black community gets the representation it needs," Shaw said. "But it's not just the black community. We represent people as a whole. When you start dividing people up into race, if you're not careful you can get yourself into a lot of trouble."
Perhaps Gouras should have read - and referenced - the earlier AP report containing that zinger. And, needless to say, if I switched things around in that article it would sound like something from the 50s or before.

Far-lefties pushing Gramscism on 5-year-olds in Massachusetts

Here's a test. Is the following report from Massachusetts in 2005, or from the Soviet Union in 1965 and I've just changed the names and locations? You decide:
While the trial of a Massachusetts parent arrested while attempting to secure a promise from school officials to notify parents before teaching about homosexuality in his son's kindergarten class has been postponed until next month, the school district is taking a hard line against such notification.

Paul Ash, the superintendent of schools in Lexington, has announced his instructions to all teachers in the district to give no notice to parents of efforts to teach "diversity" lessons about "alternative lifestyles" – even in primary grades.

In April, David Parker of Lexington spent a night in jail and was charged with criminal trespassing after refusing to leave a scheduled meeting with officials [over the policy]...
What kind of lessons were involved?
...Parker's then-5-year-old son brought home a book to be shared with his parents titled, "Who's in a Family?" The optional reading material, which came in a "Diversity Book Bag," depicted at least two households led by homosexual partners.

The illustrated book says, "A family can be made up in many different ways" and includes this text:

"Laura and Kyle live with their two moms, Joyce and Emily, and a poodle named Daisy. It takes all four of them to give Daisy her bath."

Another illustrated page says:

"Robin's family is made up of her dad, Clifford, her dad's partner, Henry, and Robin's cat, Sassy. Clifford and Henry take turns making dinner for their family."
Answer: no, this is actually from Massachusetts in the United States. If it had been the Soviet Union, Parker would be in Siberia by now, and "liberals" haven't gotten to that point yet.

Lawyer objects to legally correct term "illegal alien"

Westchester County NY's Reeducation Roadshow - more formally known as the "Stop Prejudice Now listening tour" - visited Spring Valley and discussed immigration matters. Based only on the report available in "Immigrant activists speak" I'm going to assume that this is a far-left, Gramscian attempt to open up the borders. It does however includes this humorous bit:
[Westchester Human Rights Commissioner S. Ram Nagubandi] received a number of thoughtful replies and practical suggestions, in addition to the idea that county employees be trained. One, from [attorney Vicki] Cohen, was straightforward.

"One thing that we can certainly do is try to eliminate the phrase 'illegal alien,'" she said. "It's an outrageous phrase."
Needless to say, the term "illegal alien" appears multiple times in the U.S. Code, something which (I'd hope) Cohen is familiar with. On the other hand, "undocumented" does not appear.

Latinos: the new Model Minority to keep Pittsburgh strong!

Richard Delgado is university distinguished professor of law and Derrick Bell fellow and Jean Stefancic is research professor of law and Derrick Bell scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where they teach courses on race and civil rights.

Now, they offer us a slice of all-American thinking entitled "Let's welcome Latinos to Pittsburgh". If you thought George Bush talks like he's in the fifth grade, step back a grade or two and enjoy the racialist thinking from the cream of academia:
Pittsburgh needs more Latinos. Pious, industrious, roll-up your-sleeve immigrants from Mexico and Central America, raring to work at jobs like construction, food processing, restaurants and old age homes, save their money, send their kids to school, move up the ladder and relive the American dream...

...Latinos love working in the construction industry...

...Imagine what it would do for this region if you could remodel your house for $23,000, not $30,000; or eat a fine restaurant meal for $14, not $18; if your kids could go to a neighborhood school instead of one a mile away because the local one closed...

...Construction foremen, restaurant owners and hotel managers love Latinos, who enjoy a reputation for working hard, not complaining and showing up on time...

...In some parts of the country, every work site features Latino and non-Latino workers working together to build houses, repair roads, and make things grow. Wouldn't it be nice if Pittsburgh had more of this? [Oh! What a wonderful dream, even if it sounds like it was written by and for five-year-olds -- LW]

...Latinos, with their strong work ethic and traditional respect for elders, are the logical choice, both nationally and here.
The authors are literally race pimps, demeaning not only those of the same race as they, but other races as well. Now, let's try an alternate version of their article. Tell me what you think about this:
Pittsburgh needs more Whites. Pious, industrious, roll-up your-sleeve immigrants from Europe, raring to work at jobs like construction, food processing, restaurants and old age homes, save their money, send their kids to school, move up the ladder and relive the American dream...

...Construction foremen, restaurant owners and hotel managers love Whites, who enjoy a reputation for working hard, not complaining and showing up on time...

...Whites, with their strong work ethic and traditional respect for elders, are the logical choice, both nationally and here.
Now, of course, if Richard Delgado said that he'd be a racist, now wouldn't he?

Is "color is cool and white is washed out" racist?

The L.A. Times offers us "Networks Have an Ear for Spanish". After several other disturbing quotes, it ends with this wonderful statement:

["Gary Bassell, chief executive of the Bravo Group, a New York advertising agency that specializes in reaching Latinos"] predicts that if handled deftly, such themes could appeal not just to Latinos, but to young people of all ethnicities "who've been shaped by an American pop culture today that increasingly proves that color is cool and white is washed out."

In the world of "liberalism", that is not an extremely racist statement. Therefore, if you object to that extremely racist statement, don't support "liberals".

Sadler Elementary School and Reeducation Camp

Jan P. Hall was, until last week, a fifth-grade teacher at Sadler Elementary in Orange County, Florida. She was suspended for allegedly writing a "racist" letter to an unknown congressman. She hasn't admitted writing the letter, no copy of the original letter has been printed, and it's also questionable whether the content of the letter itself is "racist" or whether it's just politically incorrect but largely fact-based. There are also questions of the First Amendment here, but don't expect the ACLU to get involved. How did the letter become public knowledge? Is she allowed to send a letter to her congressman without worrying about political repercussions? Can the school district take action against her for her political speech? How far will the teacher's union go to defend her and protect her right to speak?

Several links about this are here. Jan Hall wrote the letter in English, but so far the only copy made available is one that was printed in El Nuevo Dia; it was translated into Spanish before being printed there. An automatic translation into English is here. Without seeing the original version, it's difficult to go through it point-by-point and find out what's "racist" and what's uncomfortable fact.

"Teacher faces hearing on letter" has more on this modern-day witch hunt:
The letter, supposedly written to a congressman, complained that Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Haitians, Middle Easterners and others should not be allowed to stay in the country. The letter denigrated the education of Puerto Rican teachers and stated that "Puerto Rican children are holding back American children academically."
Is there evidence to support that assertion or not? Don't expect the school district to seek the truth, that would be "insensitive." What about the training of Puerto Rican teachers, as mentioned in "Teacher's suspension roils district"? Are they indeed weak in math? Is there evidence for or against that?
...[A parent] said she took offense when Hall suggested her daughter be evaluated for a learning disability. A final blow was that Hall directed her daughter to special-education classes and then to repeat the fifth grade...
Perhaps that student should be reevaluated then. If it turns out that Hall was incorrect, then there's a problem. If not, will she get her job back?
...However, another parent of a Sadler student said she had no complaints about the woman who taught her 11-year-old granddaughter...

The woman she met in the classroom did not seem like the one being portrayed as a racist on the six o'clock news, Brown said. The letter was published Wednesday in the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día.

"It's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," Brown said. "I had met her. She wasn't arrogant or nothing. All the teachers were nice in that school. I have no complaints."

...Sadler Principal Anne Lynaugh seemed ambivalent Friday as she spoke about the case that disrupted her school's operations.

Lynaugh reported Hall to the school district for investigation and was the administrator to whom Hall confirmed that she had written such a letter. Although Lynaugh has condemned the contents of the letter, she described Hall as an "excellent teacher."

The principal said she had received no complaints about Hall, and that she was "a caring professional" committed to children...
And, from this:
Manuel Rodríguez, who identified himself as one of Hall's students, told El Nuevo Dia that during a social studies class last week, the teacher said that "Colombians bring drugs (to the country)." "I was very offended by what she said, because I am Colombian. That is not true about the people of my country," said the ten-year-old boy.

He added that he felt sad to some extent, because "she was a good teacher and she gave me an "A" in everything.” But on the other hand, he was glad she was sanctioned, "because I didn't like her talking like that about Colombians."
At Sadler Elementary School, apparently we're to forget that Columbia is indeed one of the major drug-supplying countries. Just forget about that. It's not true. Look, a witch!

Now with 20% more Asian content!

virginia fields campaign flyer airbrush Picture to the right are NYC mayoral candidate Virginia Fields and her supporters. The bottom photo was produced from the top by Photoshopping in two Asians who were not supporters. Apparently the airbrushing was done by her direct mail company. (Via this).

From "C. Virginia Fields tries damage control over doctored photo":
Ominously, Fields refused to rule out the existence of other doctored photos, saying her staff was looking into the matter.

The presser had a weird Watergate aura, with a rattled Fields saying she wanted to make it "perfectly clear" no wrongdoing had been done, TV reporters inexplicably referring to her as "Madam President" and one TV person asking her "who ... knew what, when?"
On a more serious note, Fields supports non-citizen voting.

And, her opponent Fernando Ferrer is a buddy of former MEChA member and current Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

And, in other pandering news, "Mayor Mike fully supports illegal immigration".

Canada signs "cyberhate" law, now as bad as China

Last week Canada joined Europe in fulfilling Orwell's nightmare: "Canada signs protocol to fight 'cyberhate'". According to Canada's Justice Minister Irwin Cotler:

"No one country alone can combat racist hate, particularly cyberhate... This is an anonymous, borderless, faceless crime. We've gone from five hate sites on the Internet in 1995 to 5,000 in 2005. These are horrific sites. They're used for purposes of recruitment. They particularly target the young. It is predatory hate of the worst kind... We believe that incitement to hatred is the most proximate cause of terrorism itself. Therefore, if you're combating incitement to hatred, you're combating terrorism..."

I haven't read the law, but CNN defines "cyberhate" as "the online dissemination of xenophobic propaganda". All you need to do is look at all the times that "liberals" attempt to smear people and statements as "xenophobia" to see just how dangerous this is.

A note to my Canadian friends/mes amis Canadienne:
Welcome! Je vous encourage de lutter cette loi avec toutes votres forces! Dit <<non>> a la thoughtcrime!

Welcome! I encourage you to fight this law with all your might! Say "No" to thoughtcrime!

Bloggers and other may have to consider blocking Canadian access to their sites unless this is overturned.

(On a literally parenthetical note: If you want to see how bad G's SERPs suck, search for 'Orwell'. Wow. I ended up linking to WP since I didn't want to scroll any further down.)

More "liberal" racism

Pennsylvania Rep. Thomas Yewcic of Cambria County in SW PA was speaking in PA's house in favor of a bill that would allow members of homeowner's associations to fly American flags even if the covenants prohibited it:

"I don't think we should be embarrassed or ashamed to support the American flag or what it represents," Yewcic said. "If any ethnic group wants to fly ... a flag, and they're embarrassed to fly an American flag, they should go back to their ethnic origins and fly it there."

Yewcic is white, and that prompted Philadelphia's Rep. John Myers, who's black, to utter the following:

"I think that those type of remarks would come from a cracker"

Not only that, he followed it up with an "apology":

"I'm hearing my colleague. I appreciate him standing up and being a man, and I'd like to do the same thing. I'm sorry for referring to him as a cracker..."

According to the AP, the last prompted "hoots of laughter mixed with boos." The same or a similar AP report is in the S.F. Chronical, but note that they edited out the full explanation of the "apology." And, you can see "liberals" supporting this use of the word "cracker" here.

In previous reports, you can see a very similar reaction to the use of that racial epithet from the DUmmies here. And, you can read about Al Franken's "liberal" racism here.

Colorblind casting, indeed

AP:
When Jackie Gleason was growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn in the 1930s, many of his neighbors resembled his family, Irish and working-class. Today, the residents remain mostly working-class, but almost all are black.

Perhaps, then, it makes sense that a film remake of Gleason's classic TV comedy "The Honeymooners" would feature a mostly black cast, with Cedric the Entertainer as the new face of loudmouthed Ralph Kramden.

The film, which opens in theaters Friday, reflects a growing trend in recent years called cross-casting - casting minorities in roles originally played by whites...

Colorblind casting in remakes, some say, is a hopeful sign that Hollywood executives are increasingly understanding that talented actors of color can fill prominent roles - and drive ticket sales...
Obviously - obvious to everyone but the AP - this isn't colorblind casting. This is about the money: apparently that studio decided that they'd make more money with this configuration than with, say, Alec Baldwin as Ralph and Janeane Garofalo as Alice (just to choose two names). Also, let me know when - for instance - The Color Purple is remade with an all-Bollywood cast.

Minneapolisians celebrate diversity, global connectedness, sweetness, light

The wife (Megan O'Hara) of the mayor of Minneapolis (R.T. Rybak) offers us a wonderful, heartwarming, life-affirming lesson that's not just about that city's Minneapolis MOSAIC Arts Festival, it's about how absolutely wonderful immigration is. If you haven't yet had your daily cup of treacle, dip into "Our urban culture reflects heritage of immigrants":
Immigrants have come from across the world to leave their mark on Minneapolis. French fur traders and European settlers made their living in trade with the Native Americans living here for millennia. One hundred years ago it was Swedes, Norwegians and Eastern Europeans... [etc. etc. etc.]

...Despite a Minnesota tradition of welcome and strong social services, recent surveys have shown a strain in the fabric of generosity in our state. Some Minnesotans worry that immigrants put too high a burden on our public services and take our jobs.
Ah hah! I knew this editorial had a point. Apparently some Minnesotans - xenophobes all - are trying to inject some reality into O'Hara's multiculti fantasy world.
But if the post-9/11 world has shown us anything, it is that we live in state of global connectedness. As trade barriers have fallen and immigration has risen, the faces we see all around us are part of the new economy and the new society...
In other words, like it or not, this is what we're going to do, so you might as well just get used to it. As for the 9/11 bit, that's verging awfully close into Ward Churchill territory.
[...she goes on...] There is no better way to understand each other than to revel in the songs, drumming, dance, theater and spoken traditions of our neighbors. But it's not just celebrating diversity, it is celebrating our common life... [...she goes on some more...]
Think of her as a condescending, useful idiot, Sally Struthers of globalization and free trade.

I'll stipulate that immigration is great, if people like O'Hara are willing to fully disclose exactly why they and their associates are so much in favor of it and are willing to discuss the downsides as well.

Berkeley to be renamed Ramseyville

Parents, staff, and students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley, CA recently voted to change the name of their school to... Sequoia Elementary School. The name change still needs to be approved by the school board:

The drive to change the name of Jefferson Elementary School was launched more than two years ago by Marguerite Talley-Hughes, an African-American teacher, and two other teachers who felt the name was offensive because the nation's third president was a slave owner.

Talley-Hughes did not return calls for comment Wednesday but said in an earlier interview, "I think it's difficult to ask people to accept someone as a hero who enslaved their ancestors..."
Other candidates for the name change included:
Ohlone, Rose, Peace;... farm worker organizer Cesar Chavez; Ralph Bunche, a United Nations diplomat; Sojourner Truth, a leader in the abolitionist movement; and Florence McDonald, a former Berkeley City Council member...
What's slightly funny here is that the city of Berkeley was named after Bishop George Berkeley. And - surprise! - he was a slave owner. More on that here. Perhaps they could rename the whole city after Ramsey Clark. Or - even closer to home - how about Susanmedeabenjaminton?

What's not funny about this is that - whether intended or not - it's part of a general trend of trashing America's past towards anti-American ends. See "Gramscian Methods Broadly Defined!" for more.

What's missing from this picture?

Can anyone tell me what's missing from the picture here?

Here's a hint. It's not missing from the pictures here or here. It's not missing from this large and not exactly pleasing picture. This picture is not missing that unknown factor, and the left-hand side of it is quite a bit better as well. The unknown factor is not missing from here, nor here, nor here nor here. As you can see from the last few links, that unstated factor is even available in clipart form. And, here's that unknown factor in GIF form.

I could care less about what some pizza chain in Texas does. But, if you asked a "liberal" to explain why the first picture is not like the others, well, I'm sure you can imagine the reaction. Words like "historical oppression" and "mean-spirited" would flow like water. So, I'm just providing yet another example of "liberal" hypocrisy, albeit being hypothetical in this case.

"Too Controversial for the University of Denver"

Former CO Gov. Richard Lamm was a professor at the University of Denver before he became governor, and he returned there afterwards. At some unspecified date in the past he wrote an article entitled "Two Wands" that "was in response to a particularly offensive screed on white racism by one of our affirmative action officials. I felt it should not go unanswered."

However, it was repeatedly turned down for publication in the campus newspaper, from the lowest rungs to the chancellor of the university. He refused to publish the article as well. However, last year a journal published it, and you can read it here. Send it to the "liberals" you know.

No, Jackie Goldberg doesn't have anything better to do

The L.A. Times article "'Redskins' Face Possible Statewide Ban" describes CA state Assymbmn. Jackie Goldberg's attempts to forbid school teams being named after Indians. A stomach-churning taste:
Dozens of civil rights groups and Indian tribes have endorsed the measure. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has endorsed a broad ban...

Goldberg has been backed by the Alliance Against Racial Mascots, a group that seeks the elimination of American Indian mascots, logos, team names and nicknames in all California schools and educational institutions...

"The genius of America is not about majority rules, it's that the minority is not allowed to be stomped on just because they have smaller numbers. That's a very different approach than most other countries in the world," Goldberg said. "We give that up every time we say, 'Gee, people like the name Redskins.' "

Caption this pic!

Please caption this picture:

Now, caption this picture:

(Via the suddenly disreputable Captain Kevin Drum)

The second picture is of a robot jockey being tested in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The Captain says about as much about this as I do, but it's quite possible he's more interested in the neat-o techology of robot jockeys than the subtext. Of course, if it were, say, Swedes who gathered around a robot jockey who looked like the first picture, then and only then would we expect some outrage.

As for me, I'm less outraged than I am interested in the cultural subtext.

And, I'm wondering why the jockey has red lips.

Yes, it was apparently the victim's fault

DALLAS -- A high school teacher faces an assault charge after police say she walked into a middle-school classroom, grabbed a teacher's hair, yanked her out of her chair and dragged her across the room while punching her in the face and kicking her. According to the police report, Paulette Baines grabbed Mary Oliver in front of a class full of gifted students Friday. Baines was angry because Oliver told her daughter to quit loitering by lockers and go to class, Dallas school district spokesman Donald Claxton said. Oliver said Baines was yelling at her as she entered the classroom. "I want you to know I didn't raise a finger. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't do anything to aggravate the situation," Oliver said...

And, that would be the end of that tale. Except, the alleged assaultor Baines is black and the alleged victim Oliver is white.

In a low point in MSM commentary, that results in "Scott Parks: Is trouble at Travis a matter of race?" Apparently, it was Oliver's fault for what happened, and a new round of sensitivity training will be required (after Oliver recovers from her injuries, of course.)

PETA's Horrible Secret

From September 3, 2003:

We all know that PETA is quite possibly the most annoying and certainly the most arrogant of all the leftist groups currently attempting to alter our way of life. However, I doubt that outside of a few nosy people and former PETA employees anyone knows how they care for homeless pets in Hampton Roads, Virginia (their headquarters, right)...They kill them!

That's right, this warm fuzzy bastion of animal rights kills every once beloved family pet who has the misfortune of being carried through PETA's doors. People take animals to PETA instead of local shelters because they believe that they will be placed into a home and will not be put down. Unlike local animal shelters, PETA doesn't even bother trying to find homes for these pets. All of them are killed within a few hours. In fact, PETA has gone through several area vets, and they refused to euthanize healthy animals. Finally PETA constructed their own facilities for this practice...

PETA doesn't stop with animals who are dropped off at their facility. No, they actively seek out animals throughout the community to kill. PETA sets traps to catch roaming animals all over Hampton Roads. These traps are designed to catch cats, many of these are not just strays but people's pets. They have even ventured onto a local federal installation, where they captured dozens of cats and immediately killed them...

"Holy Moses!" you might be saying. Could this be true? Is this a satire, or an urban legend? How could sweet, sweet Lisa Franzetta be mixed up in something like this?

Well, would you believe the Associated Press (for the most part)? This page appears to have a rewrite of an AP article about PETA's policies. And, in fact, PETA has a page that discusses their euthanization policies.

Part 2 of the quoted article is here. It goes into alleged mind-control by PETA of their employees. And, Part 3 is here.

"Heteronormative"? WTF?

Drudge linked to the article "Pinkett Smith’s Remarks Debated" earlier, but I think it deserves its own post here. I just sent out a message to VRWC-l suggesting that all members print it out and use it in their conversion rituals. Even "liberals" will be able to recognize when their side has gone so far they've gone off the edge.

UPDATE: The Boston Herald weighs in:

...While neither group specified what Pinkett Smith said that was so offensive, a previous edition of the Crimson included a quote from the actress from the event at Sanders Theater.

"Women, you can have it all - a loving man, devoted husband, loving children, a fabulous career," she said. "They say you gotta choose. Nah, nah, nah. We are a new generation of women. We got to set a new standard of rules around here. You can do whatever it is you want. All you have to do is want it."

Isn't that Prof. Thomas Klocek behind the gag?

Good guess! That's who it is:

Last fall, DePaul University professor Thomas Klocek was suspended without a hearing for challenging the viewpoints of certain Muslim students on campus at a student activities fair. He is now demanding a public apology from the university president in order to avoid litigation.

Klocek showed up to the news conference bound and gagged, illustrating what he believes the university did to him by censoring his views on the Middle East. Klocek says he was unfairly suspended for his views on the Muslim and Palestinian people...

UPDATE: There's much more about Klocek and one of the people the reporter of this piece interviewed here. Hint: the word "reporterette" is involved.

Blacks, Hispanics to join, fight against other groups

The Houston Chronicle's "Minority groups 'fighting as one': NAACP, LULAC align in symbiotic, and sometimes strained, pursuit of common goals" has all the details:

...The groups took the idea further on Monday in Austin, when LULAC state director Roger Rocha and Texas NAACP President Gary Bledsoe stood side by side on the steps of the Capitol during a rally with 100 members of their organizations.

"We are here together as two organizations, fighting as one," said Rocha. "Everything we've worked so hard for will not go silently into the night."

Bledsoe described Hispanics and blacks as "communities under siege..."

"Do Asian Americans Count in L.A.?"

Raphael J. Sonenshein, "a political scientist at Cal State Fullerton", suggests ways that Asians can achieve the wonders of corporate pluralism in L.A. in "Do Asian Americans Count in L.A.?":

..One way to jump-start Asian American electoral success in L.A. would be to create smaller City Council districts or separate boroughs, with their own elected councils, but such ideas may never materialize. More immediately, the city's new neighborhood councils provide leadership opportunities with a real electoral future, and these positions could supplement current Asian American civic participation as public employees, community activists and members of city boards and commissions...

Perhaps Sonenshein should take a field trip up north to find out how they're doing it: "Oakland's Bilingualism - No Americans Need Apply".

Debbie Schlussel and Deep Throat

Su piel es su vota

The LAT wonders why more Latinos are vibed up about the L.A. Mayor's race. After all, aren't not one but two of their own in the race?

Mayor's Race Registers a Big Nada ends with this:

"Villaraigosa is a man of the community, he's one of us," said the 33-year-old laborer. "When he lost, I felt that we as Latinos let him down, because we should have elected him. This time, he is going to win."

Translating that quote into white, black or asian, and dealing with the shitstorm that would follow, is left as an exercise.

"No whites need apply"

From the "liberals" in the frozen north:

CRITICS ARE calling it "craziness" that the Correctional Service of Canada is disqualifying candidates for parole officer jobs because they're white. An Ontario job-seeker received a rejection letter recently, advising that only aboriginals and visible minorities need apply.

"Please be advised that effective immediately the Ontario region of the Correctional Service of Canada is no longer maintaining an inventory for parole officer applications from the general public," the Feb. 19 letter reads.

"Due to staffing resources we will continue to accept applications from aboriginal and visible-minority candidates only."

CSC is committed to having a "skilled, diversified workforce reflective of Canadian society," the letter continues, adding that future vacancies may be posted that are open to the "general public..."

"Who in the World is George Washington?"

(CBN News) - As the nation observes the 273rd anniversary of George Washington's birth, our first president's accomplishments are fading from the nation's consciousness. Many public school children no longer learn about President Washington in the classroom.

Some states have even removed required teaching about Washington from their standards of learning (SOLs), saying specific instruction about Washington is not needed...

A recent survey conducted by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni shows that four out of five seniors from the top 55 colleges and universities received a grade of "D" or "F" on their knowledge of American history. They could not identify Valley Forge, famous words from the Gettysburg Address, or even the basic principles of the Constitution.

Why don't they know the basics of American history? Part of the reason may be because students can now graduate from 100 percent of the top colleges in the United States without taking a single course in American history.

And 78 percent of colleges and universities do not require students to take any history at all...

"Andean Storm Troopers"

What? First I've heard of this:

While President Bushs sweeping vision of worldwide democracy was never more vividly conveyed than in his recent inaugural speech, he has thus far failed to acknowledge an alarming anti-democratic movement festering within Americas own hemisphere: the increased radicalization of Indians in South Americas Andean region and their assumption of anti-democratic, reactionary and strikingly fascistic attitudes. This trend is increasingly powerful in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru and, if not dealt with quickly, will lead to the regions collapse into a political, economic and social Stone Age, posing a danger to the entire world.

In addition to their vocal opposition to capitalism, the United States and democracyall characteristics that explain their close ties to the Left in their countries as well as to the Chavez regime in Venezuela and to Castros Cubathese movements are also openly racist. Indeed, they advocate a return to the preColumbian Inca state, with the European cultural and ethnic (i.e. white) additions removedby force. In any other circumstance, the combination of racism and historic nostalgia would instantly produce cries of fascism from the politically correct Left. But, not surprisingly, it views the situation in South America far differentlyafter all, to the Left, the oppressed races cannot be racist, only the white oppressors can and are...

Ward Churchill to spend more time with family

"Professor Resigns as Department Chair Amid Furor Over 9/11 Remarks":

DENVER (AP) - A University of Colorado professor who provoked a furor when he compared victims of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks to Nazis resigned as a department chairman Monday but will retain his teaching job, the university said...

Churchill resigned as chairman of Colorado's Ethnic Studies Department, telling university officials in a letter that "the present political climate has rendered me a liability in terms of representing either my department, the college, or the university."

University officials welcomed the move.

"While Professor Churchill has the constitutional right to express his political views, his essay on 9/11 has outraged and appalled us and the general public," interim CU-Boulder Chancellor Phil DiStefano said.

On the one hand it's good to see him go. On the other hand, he does have the right to say outrageous things about one of the only countries that gives him that right. And, this might invite retaliatory actions from the loony left establishment at other schools.

College Republicans get Gramscians' goats

EDMOND, Okla. -- A University of Central Oklahoma student group is planning what it calls "Straight Pride Week" on campus...

"The general gist is that if you are a straight student on campus be proud, be loud, this is your time to shine," said college Republican Kyle Houts.

The group has posted fliers on campus that read, "we're here, we're conservative, we're out..."

Needless to say the Gramscians are not pleased:

Members of the Gay Alliance for Tolerance and Equality say they consider the College Republican's celebration an attack on gay and lesbian students.

"What is there to say about it, 'I'm proud, and I'm straight and I guess white,' I don't know?" said GATE member Jennifer Rodriguez. "I think they definitely are being discriminatory because there's probably a lot of gay Republicans out there..."

Ah, the subtle whiff of liberal racism.

And, the DU thread on this has inspired 227+ comments, most of which can be summarized with this one:

I live in Okla-HELL-ma, and I worked for a university here. This does not surprise me at all! It should be called "Hate Week" as that would be more appropriate.

This reminds me when I was a kid and I asked mom, why is there a "Mother's Day" and a "Father's Day," but no "Kid's Day?" She looked at me and said: "Everyday is kid's day!"

Shit like this is OK. People would scream bloody murder if there were a "White Pride Week." However, since it is just "fags" being the target of hate, then that is OK, especially in this state! I am all for people being proud of who they are, white, black, Jew, Christian, gay, straight....but when your pride is done to denigrate another group, that is not pride, that is plain ol' HATE!

And that's just the addendum

I quote:

...The preceding was a "first take" reading, more a stream-of-consciousness interpretive reaction to the September 11 counterattack than a finished piece on the topic. Hence, I'll readily admit that I've been far less than thorough, and quite likely wrong about a number of things.

For instance, it may not have been (only) the ghosts of Iraqi children who made their appearance that day. It could as easily have been some or all of their butchered Palestinian cousins.

Or maybe it was some or all of the at least 3.2 million Indochinese who perished as a result of America's sustained and genocidal assault on Southeast Asia (1959-1975), not to mention the millions more who've died because of the sanctions imposed thereafter.

Perhaps there were a few of the Korean civilians massacred by US troops at places like No Gun Ri during the early 50s, or the hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians ruthlessly incinerated in the ghastly fire raids of World War II (only at Dresden did America bomb Germany in a similar manner).

And, of course, it could have been those vaporized in the militarily pointless nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

There are others, as well, a vast and silent queue of faceless victims, stretching from the million-odd Filipinos slaughtered during America's "Indian War" in their islands at the beginning of the twentieth century, through the real Indians, America's own, massacred wholesale at places like Horseshoe Bend and the Bad Axe, Sand Creek and Wounded Knee, the Washita, Bear River, and the Marias...

Bear in mind, that's just the addendum. What comes before has to be read (or, more precisely, has to have its first few paragraphs scanned before you get an inkling of where it's going) to be believed.

Now, you might be asking, what's all this about? "CU prof's essay sparks dispute" explains it all:

A University of Colorado professor has sparked controversy in New York over an essay he wrote that maintains that people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were not innocent victims.

Students and faculty members at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., have been protesting a speaking appearance on Feb. 3 by Ward L. Churchill, chairman of the CU Ethnic Studies Department...

Churchill's essay argues that the Sept. 11 attacks were in retaliation for the Iraqi children killed in a 1991 U.S. bombing raid and by economic sanctions imposed on Iraq by the United Nations following the Persian Gulf War.

The essay contends the hijackers who crashed airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11 were "combat teams," not terrorists...

One of the VRWC members implanted at DU tries to oppose the professor, but is met with righteous resistance. Other VRWC members suggest the Prof.'s been hitting the pipe, but righteous liberals put them on the correct path.

Special Bonus Fun Tip for the Kids!

Peel back the URL containing the Prof.'s screed, and check out the kool t-shirts!

"Spokane's 'creative class' plans to build a gay district"

SPOKANE -- Gay activists in this staid Eastern Washington city are planning to create a neighborhood of gay-oriented homes, businesses and nightlife, which religious conservatives complain will be at odds with Spokane's family-oriented culture.

A gay district would signal that Spokane is tolerant and progressive, proponents contend, the type of community that can attract the so-called "creative class" that will build the economy of tomorrow.

"We're talking about an actual physical part of town we would like to establish as a gay district," said Marvin Reguindin, owner of a Spokane graphic design firm, who envisions an area similar to the Castro district of San Francisco or Capitol Hill in Seattle...

...Or, perhaps the new non-straight district in Oaktown. See Oakland to create gay ghetto by government fiat, remove straights.

"Can I lose weight and support Zimbabwean land reform... at the same time?"

Yes! From "'Obesity tourism' is Mugabe's answer to feeding Zimbabwe":
ZIMBABWE has come up with a bizarre proposal to solve the food crisis threatening half its population with starvation. It wants to bring in obese tourists from overseas so that they can shed pounds doing manual labour on land seized from white farmers.

The so-called Obesity Tourism Strategy was reported last week in The Herald, a government organ whose contents are approved by President Robert Mugabe's powerful information minister, Jonathan Moyo.

Pointing out that more than 1.2 billion people worldwide are officially deemed to be overweight, the article exhorted Zimbabweans to "tap this potential".

"Tourists can provide labour for farms in the hope of shedding weight while enjoying the tourism experience," it said, adding that Americans spent $6 billion a year on "useless" dieting aids.

"Tour organisers may promote this programme internationally and bring in tourists, while agriculturalists can employ the tourists as free farm labour.

"The tourists can then top it all by flaunting their slim bodies on a sun-downer cruise on the Zambezi or surveying the majestic Great Zimbabwe ruins."

The notion that oversized, overpaid Americans could be enticed into paying to spend their holidays working free for those who seized the country's commercial farms illustrates how far the Mugabe regime has descended into a fantasy world...
I love it how they managed to diss not only Mugabe but Americans. Meanwhile, here's a (no doubt slim) British person who's both white and a supporter of Mugabe:
"In my view, comrade Mugabe is the most important African leader since Nkomo. Under his leadership, he challenged the imperialists," he says, venting his feelings.

His decision to join Zanu-PF stems from the fact that he grew up in leftist politics and the communist party of Britain, having been recruited by Ronnie Kasrils, South African minister of intelligence.

"During my travels I met a Zimbabwean lady. As a communist, there is one party I can belong to in Zimbabwe, that is Zanu-PF.

"I first joined the party in 1989 when I was outside the country in Botswana. I started becoming active again in 1998," says Deddowes.

Born in Birmingham, England, in his 20s Deddowes lived in London and was an active member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and the construction unions...

Racist liberals? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Since most "liberals" would jump to defend the people who made the following quotes, is there any reason not to call those "liberals" what they are: racists?
MARIO OBLEDO - (1998 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and former head of Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund - MALDEF) "California is going to be a Mexican state, we are going to control all the institutions. If people don't like it they should leave."

ART TORRES (former chairman, California Democratic Party) - "Remember, [Proposition] 187 [the measure to cut public benefits to illegal aliens] is the last gasp of white America."

GUS SAVAGE (former U.S. Representative from Chicago to a white member of the press) "I don't talk to you white motherf******. You bitch motherf****** in the white press. F*** you, you motherf***ing assh*** white devils."
Many more here.

And, from this:
"We are pioneers. We might as well be in covered wagons because 10 years from now, this state is brown,'' said Rep. William Delgado (D-Chicago).

". . . we have to fight for our race, we have to find the leaders who represent us." -- George P. Bush

"We are politicizing every single one of these new citizens that are becoming citizens of this country.I gotta tell you that a lot of people are saying, 'I'm going to go out there and vote because I want to pay them back.'" -- Gloria Molina, Los Angeles County Supervisor

"They're afraid we're going to take over the governmental institutions and other institutions. They're right. We will take them over. . We are here to stay." -- Richard Alatorre, Los Angeles City Council
The next time a "liberal" starts the standard "racist conservatives" BS, send them this link. If they mean what they say, they'll attempt to drive people like Obledo and Torres out of their party.

"Sister of Daley insider gets sweet deal"

This story has it all: good old Chicago corruption (as usual inextricably linked to the name "Daley") as well as a peek behind the curtain of affirmative action:

Virginia Reyes -- the sister of Victor Reyes, Mayor Daley's key political operative -- was on the verge of snagging a contract as a minority-owned business to supply toilets and other plumbing items at O'Hare International Airport.

But she had two problems.

She needed City Hall to quickly certify her firm, Toltec Construction, as a minority vendor of plumbing supplies.

And she needed plumbing supplies...

[...was certified in two days...]

...City officials didn't need to ensure that Reyes -- an attorney then at City Colleges of Chicago -- actually had any plumbing supplies to sell.

Reyes, 41, the president of Toltec, told the city she would just be reselling items bought from a suburban plumbing supply company -- a firm owned by white men...

...Toltec didn't even have to deliver the supplies for the two O'Hare warehouses built for the city by Centerpoint Properties.

Toltec ordered the supplies from the white-owned business, Builders Plumbing and Heating Supply Co.

Builders then delivered the plumbing material to Cecchin Plumbing and Heating, the white-owned contractor running the O'Hare plumbing job.

Inserting Toltec into the deal cost taxpayers more money. How much is unclear. Overall, Toltec got about $218,000 for the work on two buildings, starting in 2003, city records show. Toltec got another $480,000 for helping Cecchin with the infrastructure at O'Hare, city records show...

Ain't "liberalism" grand?

And, the difference between this and affirmative action is...?

BostonHerald:

Bank of America is trying to block a shareholder motion that would limit ``white men'' to no more than half the nominations to its board.

The bank took steps to exclude the motion from the vote at the planned stockholders' meeting due to take place on April 27...

The bank, which last year acquired FleetBoston for $48 billion, has received outside recognition for its commitment to diversity.

Four years ago, it received the highest rating of any major bank in an NAACP survey based on minority employment and community reinvestment, among other measures.

Fortune magazine also rates BofA among America's top 50 employers for minorities.

Nick Rossi, the stockholder behind the motion, could not be reached for comment. He holds $31,000 worth of BofA shares.

Rossi is apparently a professional corporate gadfly who owns or co-owns a hardware store in Boonville, CA. He "described his politics as libertarian and fiscally conservative." Considering the information at the WSJ link, his proposal seems to be serious rather than a Swiftian satire.

Other aspects of the new law:

* Vicious dogs. Grants authority to Department of Animal Care and Control hearing officers to prohibit owners of vicious dogs from owning a new dog for three years
* Dog bites. Requires dog owners to exchange personal contact information and rabies vaccine history with any person their dog bites, or the guardian of any bitten animal, as well as to notify Animal Care and Control

Source: [San Francisco] Board of Supervisors

From "Bark and bite in city's new dog care laws: Better treatment standards set for man's best friend." I searched for the legislation but couldn't find it. I'll search later, because I really want to see this.

Wikipedia Watch: You'd think she was Mother Teresa

Can Wikipedia be trusted? Here's their article on Hawaiian separatist and University of Hawaii professor Haunani-Kay Trask.

Until you get to the very last link you'd think everything was just haole-dory. But, there at the bottom - added by an unknown and lone contributor, appears a link to the article Hate America Professor:

We need to think very, very clearly about who the enemy is. The enemy is the United States of America and everyone who supports it.

The statement transcribed above is but a small sampling of the venom and hatred that typically spills from the mouth of Haunani-Kay Trask, a Professor at the Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. A guru of the racial separation/ethnic nationalism movement, Trask routinely abuses her position an educator (and American tax dollars) to spread racist and anti-American doctrine throughout the University of Hawaii student body, sometimes violently opposing the dissenting voices that arise on campus and elsewhere on the Island...

...Professor Trasks' racial instigation is not restricted to mere verbal assaults. On September 5th, 2002, the Honolulu Advisor reported, threats of violence had intimidated the director of the Academy of Lifelong Learning and frightened away the elderly students who had signed up for [Professor Kenneth] Conklins course on Hawaiian sovereignty.[11] In response to this incident, Professor Trask not only expressed her outrage that a man who opposes the racist elements of the Hawaiian sovereignty movement would be allowed to speak at the Center for Hawaiian Studies but also overtly endorsed physical violence as a means by which to protect the racist agenda of the Hawaiian sovereignty movement. When asked to comment on the cancellation of the class due to threats of violence, Professor Trask responded that, its great that somebody came back at [Professor Conklin] and threatened him...[12]

It's not racism, it's affirmative action in action!

From this:

JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) - On his first day on the job, the new sheriff called 27 employees into his office, stripped them of their badges, fired them, and had rooftop snipers stand guard as they were escorted out the door.

The move Monday by Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill provoked an angry reaction and prompted a judge to order him to rehire the employees...

...Hill, 39, defended the firings and said the new sheriff has the right to shake up the department in whatever way he feels necessary. He told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he fired the employees to "maintain the integrity of the department..."

...The firings had a racial overtone. Hill was among a spate of black candidates elected last year in the county once dominated by rural whites...

...The fired employees included four of the highest-ranking officers, all of them white. Hill told the newspaper their replacements would be black...

At post time, there appear to be just two blogs discussing this, and neither of them appear to be "liberal" blogs. I'm sure the "liberals" are just composing their profound thoughts.

To help them, please leave the bestest "liberal" excuse you can think up in the comments. Bonus points for using "oppression"; double-plus bonus points for using "dialectic" or somehow weaving Noam Chomsky or Noel Ignatiev into your tale.

UPDATE: The DU post on this story doesn't bring up the "racial overtones" mentioned above, despite linking to an AP report on the TBO AP feed and at al Guardian.

However, they have a good excuse: three paragraphs of the story linked to above have been omitted from most of the AP reports. Here are the missing paragraphs:

The firings had a racial overtone. Hill was among a spate of black candidates elected last year in the county once dominated by rural whites. The county seat was the setting for the fictional plantation Tara in "Gone With The Wind."

The fired employees included four of the highest-ranking officers, all of them white. Hill told the newspaper their replacements would be black.

Another of the newly elected black officials, Eldrin Bell, called the move illegal and filed for the restraining order granted by the judge. Bell is the new county commission chairman and former Atlanta police chief.

There are around 92 media sites with this report.

But, only ten of them include those paragraphs.

Gosh, that's interesting.

There's also a non-AP, local report in "Showdown seizes county government".

Lil' Marky wants some attention

Aw what the heck. Just so we know what's wrong with San Francisco:

Do you care much that greasy ol' Pizza Hut gave tens of thousands in PAC money to the GOP last year? How about the fact that Taco Bell stopped pumping out their happily toxic semirancid meatlike substances just long enough to write a fat check to the conservative Right? Isn't that weirdly fascinating, in a depressing and indigestible sort of way?

Does it matter a whit that, say, Fruit of the Loom underwear gave nearly 100 percent of its corporate donations to tighty-whitey-wearing Republicans, nearly every one of whom I'm guessing wouldn't know appetizing undergarments from a flap of burlap and some string?

[etc. etc. etc.]

Fred Muscara, Nancy Serpis win the Dean Wheeler Award for Sensitive Excellence

If Sully can create awards, so can I.

From 'Santa' told to lose costume at Hampton school dance:

A student dressed as Santa Claus was told to remove the suit and white beard when he arrived at a Hampton [New Hampshire] Academy Junior High School dance last Friday...

Nancy Serpis, chairman of the Hampton School Board [insisted] the dance was a "holiday" event and that dressing as Santa Claus was "inappropriate..."

...Principal Fred Muscara, who declined to be interviewed for this story, is quoted telling a Hampton newspaper: "It was a holiday party. It was not a Christmas party. There is a separation of church and state. We have a lot of students that go to Hampton Academy Junior High that have different religions. We have to be sensitive to that..."

Have a very Merry Yulemass

If you'd like to enter into the Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays debate, the L.A. Times has enough scary quotes in "School Yuletide Observances Shift Into Neutral" (also here) to fill your stocking to the brim.

The ironic thing about all this is that in their urge to strike against displays of Christianity, the secularists/multiculturalists/"liberals"/a-holes have brought the pagan part of Christmas to the fore. Mangers are verboten, but gift giving and Christmas trees are OK. Perhaps those in favor of a (real) holiday season could sue to stop all such favoritism towards paganism.

Even the word "yule", as used in the title of the L.A. Times article, is derived from a pre-conversion Germanic pagan festival. And, the word "holiday" is derived the Old English for "holy day". That formulation may have appeared in Germanic languages before the conversion to Christianity. In that case, a "holiday" would have meant a pagan festival and it now literally means a holy day.

There's more on the past history of the Winter Fest in the following:

When is an Asian-Pacific Islander not an Asian-Pacific Islander?

Your guess is probably close, but, to make it exact, here's a hint: Sacramento.

Now that your guess is almost 100% correct, here's the article.

"Two lawmakers seeking membership in Democrat-only Asian caucus":

Two Asian lawmakers are asking to be admitted to the Legislature's Asian-Pacific Islander Caucus, or be given money to start a club that will include Republican lawmakers.

Republican Assemblymen Alan Nakanishi, of Lodi, and Van Tran, of Garden Grove, said they're being unjustly excluded from the Democrat-only caucus, even though members of the vast Asian community in California have many varied political views...

They do?

..."I think the caucus represents only 50 percent - if that - of the (Asian) constituency," Tran said. "It should live up to its spirit, as Speaker Nunez said, to represent the great diversity of California. As it stands right now, it does not..."

...Asian Caucus Chairwoman Judy Chu, D-Monterey Park, said the group debated whether to include Republicans when it formed in 2001, but members ultimately decided to be Democrats-only...

The only surprising thing in the article is that Leland Yee - whose very name instantly makes me roll my eyes - supports just one caucus.

Of course, whether we need race-oriented caucusi in the first place is quite an open question, not least because the Asian-Pacific Islander caucus costs (us) $100k a year.

Barbara Boxer not "liberal" enough for some

From this:

It's an old adage that politics makes for strange bedfellows. Perhaps the latest example of this might be liberal California senator Barbara Boxer's support of the California Mission Preservation Act, a bill signed into law last week by the president. The Act sets aside $10 million over five years as funds for the restoration and preservation of California's twenty-one missions, their artwork, artifacts, and indigenous plants. Boxer emphasizes on her website that aside from their historical significance, the missions bring in substantial income for local businesses from tourists visiting the state. The Chicago Tribune offered a helpful comparison on that pointthe missions bring more money into the state's economy than any other public attraction, excepting Disneyland.

All well and good, but there's a catch one that Ms. Boxer has apparently decided to overlook. Nineteen of the twenty-one missions are owned by the Roman Catholic Church and, moreover, have active congregations. Americans United for Separation of Church and State filed a lawsuit in a federal court last week, asserting the bill violates the Constitution...

Here's the board for Americans United for Separation of Church and State. That organization has been around for 50 years, but I'm not familiar with them and I don't know if there's a tie to the Ford Foundation, PFAW, or other fine groups.

There's another report on the controversy in "Missions are dear to Californians, but should they get U.S. funds?"

In slightly related news, today's Disturbing Visual is the picture of Boxer and Feinstein at this link. Little sister/big sister? Barbara takes her Geritol? Feel free to provide your own disturbing tagline.

Santa's visit to the little sex-slaves of Bangkok canceled

Merry XMas from Canada:

...What, Santa Claus real? You might as well say that there is no such thing as hunger, that poor children never sleep on the street while bankers bloat themselves on six-figure salaries. Virginia, some people even complain that not enough children are in prison. They say this though they know that to imprison a child is the surest way to turn a single mistake into a life of crime. Why do they want to lock away the children? Because they are so poor in spirit as to hate and fear the young.

What a world it would be, if only a jolly elf could come down once a year, and bring sweetness, light, and plum pudding to all the children of the world, one half of whom go without enough to eat. What a better place if one magic sled could do the job that a hundred aid organizations can never manage, because there are never enough resources.

Santa Claus won't be coming to the murdered children of Fallujah this year, nor to the little sex-slaves of Bangkok. He won't be visiting the children crippled by cluster bombs or torn open by shrapnel. There will be no Santa for the orphans of Afghanistan or Palestine. In the birthplace of the Prince of Peace, there will be no peace this Christmas.

Santa Claus does not exist, as surely as hatred and greed and violence rule the world. Alas Virginia, how dreary life is for Santas real helpers, the Asian children who labor to manufacture the war toys under your tree. Theres no childlike faith on the factory floor, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable their daily existence...

New survey finds Republicans hate minorities

Away down towards the end of "Survey finds support for restricting Muslim-Americans' freedoms" we find this bit:

Can you say "observer bias"? Note that that clear case of observer bias follows other questionable quotes from the same "researcher."

"Hate has no place in [insert your community's name here]"

I'm no psychologist, but if you are and you're looking to write a paper, you might want to check out a few of the links at these searches:

rally "against hate" (13,500 hits)

rally "against hatred" (7,820 hits)

rally "anti hate" (4,830 hits)

A small sample:

University [of Toronto] to hold anti-hate rally: Discrimination not welcome on campus, organizers say

Bainbridge Island Anti-Hate Rally

Rally holds anti-hate message

Anti-hate resolution may not turn into force of law

Rally Against Hate

L.A. County hate crimes decline

the transcript of Kerri Dunn's anti-hate speech

Life After Hate: How Racial Crimes Affect the Culture
of Northwestern University
(another fake hatecrime)

Now, one might ask, what would motivate so many people to try to stomp out hate?

Is it money, or power, or far-left ideology, or it is something deeper?

Many of these rallies appear to be self-flagellation rituals designed to drive out inner demons disguised as attempts to drive out external demons. Now, for all I know psychologists or mythologists have already studied this, but if not it's certainly be an interesting thing to look into.

The Two Hour Anti-Hate

"Anti-hate vigil lights up Tam High"

Students, teachers, parents and community members gathered in front of Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley last night to declare their solidarity against recent hate speech at the school.

Illuminated only by streetlights and the candles they held in their hands, 250 demonstrators crowded shoulder to shoulder on the hillside facing Miller Avenue. Peace activists, student speakers and local leaders, as well as representatives from the Anti-Defamation League and the office of California State Assemblywoman Carole Migden, encouraged rally attendees to continue to be compassionate and kind in the face of last week's anti-gay vandalism...

"The acts of hatred and violence that have taken place have shocked the school and the community,"

...Last night's rally was the latest in a number of recent student-led efforts aimed at promoting tolerance and spreading an anti-hate message...

...The Leadership class and other students have distributed nearly 600 lavender ribbons to students and community members who are wearing them in solidarity against the hate crime...

"We're hoping the community and school will recognize Tam is still a safe place... Just because we've had a few instances of hate speech does not mean we're a gay-bashing school."

..."I don't see this as a reflection of the typical Tam student. It's just not in the culture of the school, and that's what raised the concern level... It was bizarre, but it shows us that no one is immune to this. There are no guarantees - no matter how progressive, how well-educated the community is - there are no guarantees there aren't going to be some people with a problem..."

At the close of the rally, as Tam student George Hines led the demonstrators in singing the Beatles' "Let it Be," a tear slid down the cheek of a gray-haired man in a blue track suit. Bob Jacobs, a science teacher for 14 years at Mill Valley Middle School, wiped his face when the song ended. Among the many Tam High students he has taught is the young girl the community came to support.

"Obviously, this is very sad," Jacobs said as a few of his current students came to greet him. "The students at this school should just keep their heads up and realize they're a wonderful group."

No word yet on whether Sammy Hagar showed up to burn a big "HATE" sign.

"Exclusive: UN Conference Shuts Up Reporter; Calls Global Warming Science Questions 'Silly'"

Buenos Aires, Argentina (CNSNews.com) - The moderator of a panel discussion at the United Nations climate change conference here shut down questioning by a reporter who asked about disputed scientific claims regarding global warming, calling such questions "silly."

The panel discussion featured representatives of the Inuit people, who were announcing their intention to seek a ruling from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights against the United States "for causing global warming and its devastating impacts."

But when asked by CNSNews.com to defend the science behind the group's legal challenge, the moderator of the event cut off the reporter's questions and threatened "to put a stop to this..."

"Former Claremont professor who faked vandalism gets year in jail"

I didn't expect Kerri Dunn to receive any jail time at all, and I think the sentence is quite harsh:

A former Claremont McKenna College psychology professor convicted of falsely reporting her car was vandalized and spray-painted with racist and anti-Semitic slurs was sentenced Wednesday to a year in state prison.

Kerri Dunn, 40, of Redlands, had claimed her car was targeted in what at first appeared to be a hate crime while she was speaking at a campus forum on racial tolerance...

Dunn was convicted Aug. 18 of one misdemeanor count of filing a false police report and two felony counts of attempted insurance fraud stemming from the March 9 incident. She had faced anywhere from probation to three years in prison...

Previous Kerri Dunn coverage starts here.

UPDATE: Apparently there's a press release or similar statement here, but I can't access that page at the present time.

The 11/22/04 entry here starts with: "I am not embarrassed that I was hoodwinked by Kerri Dunn. I was present at the fervent meetings that transpired in the days after the hate crime happened, including a prayer walk and vigil at the Claremont Colleges Walker Wall. I heard the inexplicable shouts emanating from a passing car on Foothill, trying to intimidate our collective..." and goes downhill from there.

UPDATE 2: There's a local report here. It includes these quotes from the judge: "What she did was at least temporarily terrorize the minority students on campus and make suspects out of the rest." "Something is going on with her such that she hasn't been able to get a grip on herself." "I have literally laid awake nights wondering about the tack she's taken."

Putting the "X" back in Xmas

TalkLeft is exercised about this AP report, but for different reasons than the ones I quote:

Emboldened by their Election Day successes, some Christian conservatives around the country are trying to put more Christ into Christmas this season...

The push from the religious right troubles Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. [Barry Lynn is apparently a "normal"...]

...But the "keep the Christ in Christmas" contingent is particularly agitated this year over what its members see as a troubling trend on Main Street: Target stores banning Salvation Army bell ringers; UPS drivers complaining to a free-speech group that they have been told not to wish people a "Merry Christmas" (an accusation UPS denies as "silly on its face and just not true"); and major corporations barring religious music from cubicles and renaming the office Christmas bash the "end of the year" party...

Conservative radio and TV talk show hosts have chortled over some recent incidents of what they consider political correctness run amok.

In Kansas, The Wichita Eagle ran a correction for a notice that mistakenly referred to the Community Tree at the Winterfest celebration as a "Christmas Tree." And the mayor of Somerville, Mass., apologized after a news release mistakenly referred to the Dec. 21 City Holiday Party as a "Christmas Party."

But to many ["normals"], the threats and demands that stores put up "Merry Christmas" signs are no laughing matter...

"Liberalism" at its finest

Sure, it's just a comment from a semi-anonymous "liberal", but it's also a peek into the wee little world of "liberalism":

Some pundits say that a Democrat should seize a "Sister Souljah moment." But Clinton was very careful about launching his attack. Sister made a comment about killing white people and was later invited to speak at the Rainbow Coalition meeting. There was very little ambiguity that what she said was out of bounds.

Clinton felt free to scold her for what she said. He didn't say she was a bad person. He didn't say she didn't belong in the party. He only rebuked her for a single statement that she made. A few people were upset, but reasonable people knew he was right.

What were those people upset about? That he only rebuked her one statement, or that he rebuked her at all? I suspect the author means the latter.

Kumbaya, amen.

Both Josh and Sully are up in arms about the networks refusing to air an ad from the United Church of Christ.

After seeing a snippet of the commercial, I don't see what the problem is. All it does is show a white bouncer and a black bouncer turning people away from a church. First, a straight white male parishioner with a John Edwards-style pompadour is allowed in by the white bouncer. Then, the white bouncer (assisted by his black bouncer in the background) starts turning Parishioners of Color and Parishioners of LGBT Genderial Orientation away. Then, the commercial closes with pictures of other Parishioners of Color smiling broadly. (I didn't hear Kumbaya in the background, but the snippet I saw was without sound.)

The commercial sends the message that the United Church of Christ is not just for straight white people, and that there are no white bouncers (with black sidekicks) who'll turn you away despite your Melatonin Index or Gender Identification. It's truly a wonderful, inclusive, completely harmless message and I see absolutely no problem with this commercial.

Amen.

I know how Verity feels

The samizdata thread "Multiculturalism versus Security" has a large number of comments, and some are interesting. On the one side is "Verity" and a few others, and on the other are the dhimmis-in-training named Julius and a_t. Here are a few comments from Verity:

Now Robin Cook, a shining example of his ilk and too dim to hide his light under a bushel, makes it even clearer. We are now dependent on Muslim immigrants to make our society - a success by any measure for around, oh, a thousand and more years - a "successful" multiculti mess? A great Gramscian stroke...

In addition, incompetent as it is at governance, this government has a vast army of allied leftists willing to help force its agenda through. The universities, the vast teachers' union, a large number of young students, all the lefties in local government, the lefties at the head of the police service, the lefties at the head of the prisons service, and not least the BBC and all the socialist journalists - numbering, my guess, well over a million soldiers active in the cause of forcing multiculti claptrap on people who never had a chance to vote for it...

What is so attractive to Julian about this? Many lefties cleave to immigrants from less developed cultures because they are able to position themselves as broad-minded saviours. I don't want to accuse Julian because I don't know him, but he certainly fits the pattern...

However, as I said before, there is a vast army of Gramscians more than willing to do their work for them, forcing the British to accept a primitive culture which is anathema in the enlightened west. There are librarians removing books from the shelves that mention pigs; there are teachers training children to respect Eidl Fitri or whatever it's called because 'the Muslim culture has so much to teach us', intense coverage on the Bolshevik Broadcasting Corporation any time a self-appointed Muslim spokesman for a self-styled 'Muslim Council of Whatever' has something he wants to get off his chest...

So, A_t, no, the Muslims cannot, on their own talent, force Islam on anyone. But they have at least a million helpers in the public sector intent on doing it for them...

Dear old A_t, No, the public sector isn't sitting around thinking up ways to advance the notion of jihad in Britain. It is their woolly left mindset that is the Trojan horse. 'Look how tolerant I am, how appreciative of multiculti, how unthreatened I am by 'foreignness', what a mahatama I am!"

This is fine. Some people have a need to feel they are superior souls and who cares? But their basking in bright sun of their own 'tolerance' blinds them to the agenda being forwarded by Islam. They have constantly said they will conquer Europe, and this time, as they know they can't do it by the sword, they'll do it through births. Most Muslims in Britain did not come to Britain to find a new, more enlightened life. They came to continue their old, bigotted life, but with more comforts.

Islam is toweringly offended that the powerful people of the West do not embrace Islam, and they're going to try to force them to convert. They made a good start in Spain, where they blew up around 100 people and swung the election. The fact that we exist as free, independent spirits and don't acknowledge their Allah, is offensive to Islam.

Believe me, they are not seeking multiculti -- they are working towards uniculti - their culti. And every day, some public service worker - I include BBC employees and denizens as public sector workers - hands them one more tiny victory.

"Islam is not an exotic addition to the English country garden"

From a column in the Telegraph UK:

One thing we are supposed to welcome in modern Britain is "diversity". The theory is that the mixture of races, cultures and religions which we have more and more become is a source of strength and should therefore be nurtured and celebrated. Although there is a great debate about how strong the overarching idea of Britishness needs to be for the diversity to work, there is clearly much to be said for the theory.

The authorities therefore set to work to accommodate, within reason, the special requests of the minorities...

HSBC now boasts of "Our Sharia Board" stuffed with learned sheikhs and Justices from Arabia and Pakistan. Isn't all this an encouraging example of how the resourcefulness of modern free societies can achieve tolerance and market efficiency?

But when you look a little further into the question of Islamic banking, you find that it is not, in fact, required by Islam...

So what is being proposed with Islamic banking is actually a hardening of the religion, not an accommodation of its existing custom... And when you look at HSBC's Sharia Board you find that a couple of its members have links with the Deoband, the long-standing ultra-conservative group whose schools in Pakistan educated many of the Taliban.

Two others are Wahhabis...

I return to the question of diversity. What happens if an important element of the mixture does not itself believe in diversity, but solely in the advance of its own interest?

...It does not necessarily follow that most Muslims will try to impose their beliefs on this country by violence... But it perhaps does mean that we cannot just regard Islam in Britain as a charmingly exotic addition to the English country garden...

...Once there are Islamic financial institutions, how long will it be before Muslims insist that the state and business direct all their monetary dealings with Muslims through these institutions (boycotting businesses with Jewish connections en route)? How long before Muslims, extending the logic of their concentration in places like Bradford and Leicester, seek to establish their own law within these areas, the germ of a state within a state? And how diverse would such a state be?

Some people will accuse him of racism. Some will attempt to downplay the possibility of a state within a state. The next post's for you.

Kerri Dunn to get probation, write book, give lectures, appear on Oprah...

Former Claremont visiting professor Kerri Dunn has been convicted of insurance fraud charges. Dunn staged a phony hate crime by slashing her own tires and writing racist graffitti on her own car.

She won't be sentenced until Sept. 17, so the rest of the title is just speculation. But, I don't think the sentence is going to involve much prison time, if any.

There are reports on the testimony here and here, and previous coverage starts here.

12/15/04 UPDATE: Dunn's been sentenced to 1 year.

More fun with Disinfopedia

A while back, I posted about how I'd updated Disinfopedia's report on the Ford Foundation.

Looking at that last link, I notice two changes.

First, someone else seems to have updated the bit about Henry Ford: "The Ford Foundation was founded in 1936 by Henry Ford, well known anti-Semite and receiptant of the Grand Cross of the German Eagle by Nazi diplomats in 1938."

And, more to the Lonewacko-related point, my links about the Ford Foundation have been moved to a new page: "Conservatives target the Ford Foundation".

I don't really like my links having been moved off the front page into the "evil conservative" section, but at least the links are still there and people can read them and make up their own mind.

Yes, but is a reeducation camp really the answer?

Al-Guardian reports that George Orwell's spinning speed has now reached 50 RPM. In other news:

90% of whites have few or no black friends

More than nine out of 10 white Britons have no or hardly any ethnic minority friends...

The poll found that 94% of white people say most or all their friends are of the same race, while 47% of ethnic minorities say white people form all or most of their friends. More than half of white people, 54%, said they did not have a single black or Asian person they considered a close friend.

More than eight out of 10 white people have no friends who are practising Muslims, and only one in 10 white people was close to a Hindu or Sikh...

The CRE chair, Trevor Phillips, said... the lack of close knowledge could lead white people to believe lurid tabloid headlines and racist propaganda. "When it comes to race and religion this clearly demonstrates we are dealing with a difference of which most people in this country have no first-hand experience, and therefore it is not surprising that they can be misled about blacks, Gypsies and Muslims, and it's not surprising that for no apparent reason they can become hostile and racist..."

Mr Phillips said integration could not be left to chance. He believed the government should fund US-style summer camp places for 16-year-olds where they can take part in activities with teenagers they would otherwise not meet...

Well, I guess that explains why all those whites are crypto-racists. And, given the UK's inability to stand up for minor things like privacy and against minor things like rampant political correctness, I'm sure they'll just get on trains and head right on down to the nearest reeducation camp.

Note also the name of the article's author: Vikram Dodd.

On a personal note, a couple of months ago Lonewacko briefly met an English lady of Indian extraction. If she had not gone back to London on a family emergency, Lonewacko would have eagerly added her to his (currently empty) Friendster clique.

All people must speak out against Richard Riordan's racist remarks!

The protest over former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan calling a young girl a "stupid, dirty girl" is gathering momentum:

LOS ANGELES -- State Education Secretary Richard Riordan jokingly told a child her name, Isis, meant "stupid dirty girl," prompting the head of the California NAACP on Thursday to call for his resignation...

Alice Huffman, president of the California chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said Thursday that Riordan "is not suitable to lead education in our state" and should be removed...

Democratic state Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, who had scheduled a protest by civil rights organizations, canceled the demonstration after an apparent mix-up over the girl's racial background.

Dymally was quoted in the San Jose Mercury News Thursday saying the child was "a little African-American girl. Would he (Riordan) have done that to a white girl?"

The girl is white, with blonde hair.

Dymally did not return telephone calls. His office issued a statement Wednesday calling Riordan's remarks to the girl "outrageous and irresponsible," then issued another statement Thursday saying, "To err is human; to forgive is divine."

"Race is not a factor in this issue," Dymally said in Thursday's statement, adding that Riordan had apologized a second time. "It is time for us to move on."

What Riordan did was bad, but at least the race pimps showed where they're really coming from.

Dymally - a former Lt. Governor - was last featured here when a presumably private conference he was having with Jackie Goldberg and other "progressives" was inadvertantly broadcast live throughout the Capitol.

"Say 10 Hail Gaias and attend a voluntary re-education course"

The College of Education -- which is ranked eighth out of the nation's education graduate schools, according to a 2005 U.S. News and World Report survey -- has many diversity initiatives in place, she said. The school was recently awarded an Interdisciplinary Reading Group Award from the University Center on Diversity and Community, which will allow a group of the college's faculty members to study methods for developing culturally responsive practices.

Shadiin Garcia, student support-services coordinator for the Sapsik'wal (Teacher) Education Program, said problems have existed in the college for years. But an incident during the February Career Beginnings conference, during which students learn tips for future interviews, "brought it to the forefront," she said.

At the conference, students in the college learned the importance of firm handshakes and direct eye contact when meeting with potential employers. When a student of color raised concerns that her culture does not encourage such interactions, a comment by Springfield school district's Director of Human Resources Roger Jordan was perceived to be culturally insensitive.

Jordan said he had explained what he calls "the blemish effect," which is something that might distract a potential employer during the interviewing process, such as cultural differences. He said the meaning was misconstrued and that he did not intend to propose that the student's culture was a "blemish."

"My comments there caused quite a flap at the University," he said. "And that bothers me tremendously."

Since then, Jordan said he has tried to improve his understanding of what it means to be culturally sensitive.

If you too would like to be culturally sensitive, read this: 'Education school aims to address mulitcultural crisis'.

For English, please press '1'

Recently, MD Gov. Robert Ehrlich referred to the multiculticult as "bunk" and "crap." Now Michelle Malkin takes on the multiculticultists who are whining about it:

Two politicians in Maryland are now in trouble for stating the obvious: People who work in customer service should speak English. And out-of-control multiculturalism is to blame for the failure to preserve America's common language.

The professional victims are up in arms as usual -- demanding apologies, whining to the press and clamoring for government subsidies to nurse their hurt feelings. But for once, the truth-tellers refuse to back down. They are role models for the rest of the nation's spine-deprived public officials...

The language-Balkanizers naturally attack their opponents as racists and immigrant-haters. Jorge Ribas, a Hispanic activist, likened Gov. Ehrlich to Adolf Hitler and Gov. George Wallace. Most politicians would crumple in fear and start singing "Kumbaya." But both Ehrlich and Schaefer have refused to retract their remarks. Befuddled professors and reporters view the controversy as some kind of calculated political maneuver by Ehrlich, instead of a rare outbreak of common sense.

Buying into housing discrimination

The city of Baltimore is holding home-buying fairs in a program called Buying Into Baltimore where they take people around Baltimore on trolleys, encouraging them to buy houses in that city. In fact, the first 50 people who buy a house through the program will get $3000. What the page linked to above doesn't mention is this:

Baltimore is offering 15 $3,000 grants to Hispanics who buy homes in the city... Legal scholars aren't sure the program could pass legal scrutiny -- in part because it singles out one minority group for special treatment...

There's more in this press release from the city:

In addition to 50 $3,000-grants available to the general public, ten grants will be reserved for Hispanic families participating in the workshop on September 6thand the trolley tour program. The Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development is undertaking this expanded grant program in cooperation with the Mayors Hispanic Liaison Office, Live Baltimore Marketing Center, Fannie Mae, and Centro de la Comunidad. According Jos Ruiz, Hispanic Liaison and project coordinator, "The Road to Your Home in Baltimore / El Camino a Su Hogar en Baltimore workshop and tour will provide participant with the main ingredients to becoming homeowners. The chance to receive a $3,000 grant will be a great incentive to participants who might otherwise be unable to make a down payment. For more information and to register contact Lorena Beltran at 410-545-6532. Special thanks to Assisi House, Home Down Payment Gift Foundation, BB&T Mortgage, Chase Manhattan Mortgage Corporation (see also this), Countrywide Home Loans, Live Baltimore, El Mensajero, El Tiempo Latino, and Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).

All animals are now supposedly equal, it's just that some animals are, well, you know the rest.

As you can see from the above, the feds are involved via Fannie Mae. So, contact your congressmen about this example of blatant housing discrimination and suggest they do something about it. Also, I'll be looking up the contact information for the corporations mentioned. Centro de la Comunidad is a non-profit, and, based on past experience, is probably a recipient of money from the Ford Foundation. Their annual report is not available online, and their 990 (from guidestar.com) doesn't say where their money comes from. Note however that one of their directors is associated with a foreign consulate (the Dominican Republic) and their president seems to have had a bit of trouble of late.

Charges have been filed against Claremont professor Kerri Dunn:

Prosecutors charged a Claremont McKenna College professor Monday with filing a false report and insurance fraud in connection with her report of her car being vandalized and spray painted with hate messages.

Kerri Dunn, 39, faces as many as six years in state prison if convicted as charged. She is set to be arraigned May 19 in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Pomona.

"You can't commit a hate crime against yourself,' said Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons. "So we couldn't file a hate crime charge against her.'

Ditching Diversity

The Derb has an interesting column asking whether the elites will return to racism: 'Ditching Diversity'.

He thinks there's a 90% chance that over the next generation the elites will drop multiculturalism (i.e., the idea that every culture is just as worth "celebrating" as any other, and that the old idea of assimilation into a common American culture is "oppressive" and "racist") and the chance of the elites turning racist, approving a new social order in which legal privileges will accrue to races over-represented in the cognitive elites, and be denied to races over-represented in the underclass is about 25%.

Racism in heavy rotation

A while back I discussed the HUD/Ad Council commercial that uses racism to show that racism is bad. I just saw this TV commercial on both CNN and MSNBC.

In the commercial, an actor makes calls about an apartment for rent. He uses various ethnic voices; after each he's told the apartment has been rented. Only when he uses his WASP voice does he find out the apartment is available.

In other words, our government is spending money to convince people that only WASPs are the perpetrators and beneficiaries of racism. In other words, our government is using our money to show us how one ethnic group is bad.

My attempts to draw attention to this commercial have so far failed, but maybe now that more people are seeing it someone might get interested in doing something about this.

Book: "How to get stupid black women out of office"

Oops! A wee bit of a typographical error there. The book's title is actually "How to get stupid white men out of office":

How to Get Stupid White Men Out of Office documents 20 success stories from the past five years of young people who have swung or won elections from city councils to the Senate in 16 states, South Korea, and on the Internet.

  • Alisha Thomas, a 24-year-old black woman won a state legislative seat in suburban Cobb County, Georgia, the heart of Newt Gingrich country.
  • University of Michigan students leveraged a student government election to catapult themselves into and shift the national debate about affirmative action.
  • A 21-year-old city council member in Providence, Rhode Island, and a 25-year-old mayor in New Paltz, NY both Greens.
  • Young Native Americans in South Dakota who swung a Senate seat by 528 votes in 2002.
  • Ras Baraka, Newark's hip-hop deputy mayor.
  • The young Latina campaign manager who beat the Daley machine in Chicago.

How to Get Stupid White Men Out Of Office puts its finger on the pulse of an unprecedented historical moment when the blossoming youth led political movement from Seattle to peace to sweatshops to immigrant rights to hip-hop has awakened and begun to flex its cultural influence and organizing muscle in the nasty new battlefield of electoral politics.

...Editor William Upski Wimsatt created the League of Youth Voters, a political action committee designed to raise awareness amongst younger demographics...

Just keep repeating to yourself: It's not racist, it's true! It's not racist, it's true! It's not racist, it's true!

More fun with Kerri Dunn

In my earlier post 'Hey Kids! Make your own Hate Industry Rationalization!' I had a bit of fun with the Kerri Dunn untruehatecrime incident at Claremont McKenna Collega.

For a mainly more serious take on this matter, consult these posts at academic blogs: this, this, this, and this.

That last link includes the words of Ms. Dunn herself (MP3 here):

Many people responded with, well you know Professor Dunn, weve always been taught that we should be racially blind, and that by not paying attention to it and not calling attention to differences we would minimize them. You know, thats a beautiful, beautiful, explanation... or should I say, um all right, piece of shit...

(Applause)

It has absolutely no substance and no utility in society wherein we are founded on diversity. The Statue of Liberty stands every day of all of our lives theoretically welcoming people to this land to become part of us. So to say that we should act like were color blind I really believe is an excuse. I believe its an excuse to remain lazy, its an excuse to turn your head. And its an excuse to allow these idiots to continue with their agenda.

(Applause)

< snip >

And I just, you know, I want to end this by saying as a group, we stand here, and we say were pro-diversity and anti-hate (applause) and that the people who espouse these hateful ideologies, really, I said earlier today should go underground. What I meant is that they should go to hell.

God help us if she ever becomes a dictator or something.

This post has a bit of fun with it too.

Hey Kids! Make your own Hate Industry Rationalization!

The Claremont McKenna College professor who appears to have been the victim of a hate crime is now suspected of perpetrating a hoax.

A hoax? Imagine that, a fake hate crime.

After giving an anti-hate speech, she went out to her car to find the windows smashed and it covered with hate graffitti. Thence followed marches, speeches, sit-ins, sit-downs, stand-ins, repudiations, the airbrushing of photos, posthumous rehabilitations, etc. etc. Now she's suspected of causing all the damage herself.

Let's turn this lemon into lemonade and a fun project!

Let's see who can come up with a Press Release closest to the upcoming Official Rationalization. Using the Language of the Oppressor is OK, just keep it to four paragraphs or less.

Here's a start: the article linked to above is titled 'Professor Suspected of Staging Hate Crime'. The very same AP report is entitled 'Calif. Professor Suspected of Vandalism' in al-Guardian and many other papers.

White European Christians victims too, scholar says

From the article 'A million Europeans enslaved':

An American historian says that more than a million Europeans were enslaved by North African slave traders between 1530 and 1780, a time of vigorous Mediterranean and Atlantic coastal piracy.

The number of white European slaves is only a fraction of the trade that brought 10 million to 12 million black African slaves to the Americas over a 400-year period, historian Robert Davis says, but his research shows the slave trade was more widespread than commonly assumed. The impact on Europe's white population was significant.

"One of the things that both the public and many scholars have tended to take as given is that slavery was always racial in nature that only blacks have been slaves. But that is not true," said Mr. Davis, an Ohio State University professor...

In a new book, "Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800," Mr. Davis calculates that between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by pirates called "corsairs" and forced to work in North Africa during that period.

And, from this longer blurb:

...Davis said the vast scope of slavery in North Africa has been ignored and minimized, in large part because it is on no ones agenda to discuss what happened.

The enslavement of Europeans doesnt fit the general theme of European world conquest and colonialism that is central to scholarship on the early modern era, he said. Many of the countries that were victims of slavery, such as France and Spain, would later conquer and colonize the areas of North Africa where their citizens were once held as slaves. Maybe because of this history, Western scholars have thought of the Europeans primarily as evil colonialists and not as the victims they sometimes were, Davis said.

Who knew? Here I thought I was just an Evil Oppressor, and now it turns out there lies victimhood in my past. Of course, I'm not as much of a victim as an Oppressor, but at least I'm not 100% Oppressor.

But, seriously, it wasn't just those "corsairs" enslaving Europeans. Other Euros enslaved other Euros. For instance, the word "Slav" is the same as the word "slave." The Slavs were enslaved by the Germans, and their name became the name for slaves. And, people around the world have occasionally enslaved people outside their group. Even sometimes those inside their group. There are still slaves in some countries today.

There's another report on the book here.

...a collaborative project to produce a directory of public relations firms, think tanks, industry-funded organizations and industry-friendly experts that work to influence public opinion and public policy on behalf of corporations, governments and special interests. We are already working on 3785 articles.

Sounds good, except for what follows:

The United States is supposed to be a democracy, but today powerful business interests dominate government, most citizens don't even vote, civil liberties are surrendered for national security, gunboat diplomacy alienates world opinion, and one overtly pro-business party dominates all three branches of government and the news media. What's going on, and what can be done?

PR Watch editors Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber are working on a new book, titled Banana Republicans: How the New Right is Turning American Into a One-Party State. You can help with the research, right here on the Disinfopedia.

Ah, I understand.

Nevertheless, I edited their page on the Ford Foundation (see the 'External Links' section.)

The links I added can be found by clicking the 'More' link directly below. Underneath the links are the source code for updating the Wiki page, just in case "something happens."

"How the Ford Foundation Created Multiculturalism"

FrontPage Magazine is starting a series on the Ford Foundation. I previously discussed the Ford Foundation's links with a UCLA report proposing voting rights for illegal aliens.

The first episode in their series is an older article from Heterodoxy magazine:

In an afternoon session entitled "Restructuring the University," spokespersons summarized the thinking of the workshops that had taken place earlier that morning. Robert Steele, a Professor of Psychology at Wesleyan, noted that his group was aware that coercion would be required to change the university: "People will not be quietly assimilated to multiculturalism by truth through dialogue." They will have to be bought off as well as brought along. Steele described the terms of the deal: "You get research assistants, you give mentoring." In other words, using the largesse of Ford and other philanthropic institutions, advocates of multiculturalism convince the hesitant to join up by paying for research assistants. These assistants mentors of multiculturalism must be women or people of color...

"The Foundation is a creature of capitalism," Henry Ford II said when he resigned in disgust from the foundation that bears his family name in 1977, adding that it was hard to discern any trace of capitalism "in anything the foundation does. It is even more difficult to find an understanding of this in many of the institutions particularly the universities that are the beneficiaries of the Foundation's grant program." The foundation, lamented Hank the Deuce, was ignoring the very economic system whose abundance made it and all other philanthropic foundations possible.

In talking to Henry II, former Treasury Secretary William Simon noted that by the late 1960s Ford was "engaged in a radical assault on traditional culture, under the rubric of the 'public interest' and 'systematic social change'.-Simon asked Henry Ford II how such a thing could have happened. "I tried for 30 years to change it from within to no avail," said Ford...

The ultimate target of all this energetic social transformation, however, is America's educational system, particularly its system of higher education. By the early 80s, Ford, whose activist staff was networked not just into the nerve centers of "progressive" politics but into the ganglia as well, saw that the university would be (that is, could be made to be) the battleground for an apocalyptic effort to force multiculturalism into the intellectual life of this country...

Morris Dees, racist and FBI informant

The article "Declassified FBI memo
reveals twists in probe"
about the Oklahoma City bombing contains the following information relating to Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center:

"(Name redacted) telephone call from (name redacted) on or about 4/17/95, two days prior to the OKBOMB attack, when (name redacted) of the SPLC, was in the white supremacist compound at (redacted), Oklahoma, notes the director."

The Daily Gazette reports, "References to an informant working for the SPLC at Elohim City on the eve of the Oklahoma City bombing raises serious questions as to what the SPLC might know about McVeigh's activities during the final hours before the fuse was lit in Oklahoma City but which the SPLC has failed to disclose publicly."

Dees confirmed the presence of an informant at Elohim City at a recent press conference, the paper reported.

"If I told you what we were doing there, I would have to kill you," Dees replied when asked to explain.

Dees has been critical of the so-called right-wing militia movement in the U.S., having written books and articles about the subject. His critics believe the attacks have been exploitive and designed to raise donations for his tax-exempt foundation.

"A lot of hate groups don't like me," Dees said. "I'll tell you when you put them out of business and take their double-wides (mobile homes), they don't like it. We've sued a lot of these vicious hate groups over the years."

Let's just file away for future reference that the SPLC has worked as an informant for the FBI.

What about the bit about the "double wides?" Isn't that a bit of a racist remark?

HUD: Fighting racism with... more racism

Somewhere in New Mexico, I heard a radio commercial from the Department of Housing and Urban Development which sends a bit of a not-so-subtle racist message. The message is that the word "racism" specifically implies white-against-minority racism, and that only white people - and specifically WASPs - can be the beneficiaries of racism.

Despite that subtext, the commercial recently won the Ad Council's "Golden Bell Award" for the best PSA of 2003:

"Accents," the award-winning PSA, features a prospective renter who, while using varying accents, inquires about an apartment by phone. The PSA focuses on how he is treated differently solely because of his perceived race or ethnicity. The innovative PSA was produced for HUD by the New York-based advertising agency Merkley, Newman & Harty under the direction of Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund and the National Fair Housing Alliance. To view the PSA go to HUD's website at www.hud.gov/offices/fheo/

In the commercial, the impersonator pretends to be, in order, the following:

Juan Hernandez Sanjay Kumar Tyrone Washington Chin Lee Khalib Moshe Goldberg Graham Wellington

After each voice except the last, the landlady says that the apartment has been rented. "Graham Wellington" learns that the apartment is still available.

HUD's message is that housing discrimination is a bad thing. HUD's subtext is that housing discrimination is only practised by whites/WASPs against various flavors of oppressed minorities.

Are there not landlords and landladies of various ethnicities? Don't some of them discriminate against people of various ethnicities? As far as I know, there is only one version of this commercial. While white-vs-minority discrimination might be the most frequent, it certainly isn't the only kind. But, in HUD's world that appears to be the only kind, or at least the only kind that they care about.

I'm sending an email to HUD about this, and I'll print whatever response I get here.

"City ends plan to let white teacher instruct black history"

From this:

An Ohio school district has scrapped its plan to assign a certified white teacher for a combined black-history and U.S.-government course because a black instructor was not certified to teach government, The Washington Times has learned.
"The black teacher is going to teach the course, and he will also teach government under an alternative certificate which our district can secure for him," Oberlin School Superintendent Beverly Reep told The Times.

Likewise, can we finally put an end to black teachers teaching white history? Nothing is more annoying and disconcerting than listening to a Teacher of Color trying to teach about Ancient Greece or Rome. Let's be frank: they just can't relate to our white history.

Oh, wait...

Even I have to admit that comment was unfair and snarky. There is a huge difference between a Person of Pallor teaching about black history and a Person of Color teaching about white history. The History of People of Color is a history of oppression. Why should Students of Color be forced to listen to an White Pale Pallid Oppressor of Pallor tell them about their Oppression at the hands of that selfsame White Devil Oppressor?

Wait, that last comment was snarky as well, and just shows that I as an Oppressor of Pallor don't understand the Trials and Tribulations that I have put Persons of Color through. For which I am deeply, deeply sorry.

NRO, Congressman validate this blog's existence

You'll recall that 10 days ago I discussed the Angry Clam's post about the "conservatives are crazy" academic study.

You, my blogees, will recall that I spent a couple hours of my precious time hunting down the various bosses of the paper's authors, and suggested that they be contacted about the paper.

Remember how, in the "UPDATE 2" section of that post I discussed how this paper was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Science Foundation, and even provided email and web addresses for those fine institutions?

Well, here's what Byron York of NRO had to say in their Friday edition:

Congressional investigators have found that the study was financed by $1.2 million in federal funds. According to the House Republican Study Committee [warning: PDF file], Kruglanski received National Institute of Mental Health grants totaling $976,762, Glaser received National Institute of Mental Health grants totaling $48,464, and Jost and Kruglanski together received an estimated $213,800 from the National Science Foundation...

In an interview with National Review Online, Florida Republican Rep. Tom Feeney, who looked into the study and its funding, called the project "outrageous."

"Taxpayers shouldn't be required to pay for these things," Feeney said. "If private universities, privately funded, want to study ridiculous hypotheses for political agendas, they have a right to do so, but when you are basically confiscating money from taxpayers to fund left-wing rhetoric and dress it up as scientific study, I think you have a real problem with credibility."

Here's your take-away: you don't need NRO. You don't need the high-falutin' House Republican Study Committee. All you need is the Lonewacko Blog. We've got you covered.

Oh, and Byron York/Congress, take note of the following. This is how we do things 'round here:

(NRO link via California Insider)

I'm not suggesting that Byron York or the congressman came to this blog and my post set their investigation into motion, nor am I suggesting that they did that and intentionally avoided giving me my props. I'm just being wacky about the props part of things.

Conservatism Kills!

From this Nature article of 9/20/02:

A nation's suicide rate increases under right-wing governments according two studies that have looked at Australia and Britain over the past century.

Alienation and isolation may run higher in societies driven by competitive market forces, suggest the teams behind the findings. Left-wing rule, focusing more on equality, might put people under less pressure...

In total, there were 35,000 extra British suicides under the Conservatives. "One for every day of the century, or two for every day that the Conservatives ruled," Shaw points out...

"However," Cooper adds, "political parties now are not so distinct." He predicts that with the political gulf between parties narrowing, the suicide gap "will close quite dramatically in the next 50 years".

These studies just confirm what I already knew. And, most likely that goes for the researchers as well.

See this post for another study that found what they wanted to find.

Only full-blooded Asians need apply

From "Fox's 'Banzai' angers Asians":

HOLLYWOOD - Fox is sticking by its newest reality show, "Banzai" - despite protests from Asian-American groups who find the show offensive...

Aki Aleong, president of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, believes the exaggerated accents used by the narrators in "Banzai" reinforces negative stereotypes of Asians here.

"This is America," Aleong said. "They do not do shows with the 'N' word anymore. They took off 'Amos n Andy' when it was a top-10 show. They took off the Frito Bandito because it was offensive."

Aleong said his group wasn't looking for Fox to cancel "Banzai" but would like it "retooled" to eliminate the accents or have some Asian actors who speak English clearly.

"We laughed at the games on the show," he said. "We would support this show in a minute if it had some balance."

Berman said future episodes of "Banzai" would have the narrators speaking more clearly. But she added that the accents of the Asian actors on the show are real and there are no plans to change them.

"We are working with Asian people," she said. "These are the voices of these men. We're not putting other voices on them."

Perhaps FOX should send them a big box of lollies and blankies in an attempt to make amends.

No, they can't do that, but hopefully one day someone will. MANAA, you will recall, are the same crybabies who protested the casting of John Cleese as Lucy Liu's father in the work of art known as Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. In their LA Times editorial, they said that Lucy was obviously a "full-blooded Asian," and decried the auteur's inability to feature a nice, normal Asian nuclear family.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that Banzai, or at least some of its skits, appears to be lensed in jolly old England.

"Black like me"

Peter Kirsanow, a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, has an interesting column on exactly what qualifies some people to be more equal than others:

Yes, we know that the Supreme Court permits selective colleges to award a "plus" to black, Hispanic, and Native-American applicants. But just who, exactly, qualifies as black, Hispanic, or Native American?...

Is an applicant of Moroccan descent an African American entitled to a plus or is he an Arab American, who gets none? Does an ethnic German applicant recently emigrated from Peru get a Hispanic plus? Does a white applicant with a black great-grandfather get an African-American plus? And why doesn't a native Hawaiian get a Native-American plus, as do Alaskan natives?...

Some states employed the "one drop" rule any black ancestor, however remote, rendered one black. Alabama held that anyone at least 1/32 black i.e., who had at least one black great-great-great-grandparent was to be excluded from white schools. North Carolina, on the other hand, only went back four generations...

These are similar to the questions I raised in the old post "Three-fifths of a job applicant":

I wonder, do bi- or multi-racial people have an advantage when helping a corp meet its Diversity Goals? Will ProFound require a breakdown of ones ethnic components? Would someone who's, say, half-Colombian and half-Lebanese count as 1 person of each, or would each half only contribute .5 to the corresponding Diversity Goal?...

If someone is three-fifths black and two-fifths white, do they count as one black person towards my company's Diversity Goals?

What if someone is mainly white, but has a little bit of black blood in them. Even if it's just one drop, can they count as black for our Diversity Goals?

"Conservatives" also object to Lysenkoism

From the UC Berkeley press release "Researchers help define what makes a political conservative":

BERKELEY Politically conservative agendas may range from supporting the Vietnam War to upholding traditional moral and religious values to opposing welfare. But are there consistent underlying motivations?

Four researchers who culled through 50 years of research literature about the psychology of conservatism report that at the core of political conservatism is the resistance to change and a tolerance for inequality, and that some of the common psychological factors linked to political conservatism include:

  • Fear and aggression
  • Dogmatism and intolerance of ambiguity
  • Uncertainty avoidance
  • Need for cognitive closure
  • Terror management...

Hitler, Mussolini, and former President Ronald Reagan were individuals, but all were right-wing conservatives because they preached a return to an idealized past and condoned inequality in some form. Talk host Rush Limbaugh can be described the same way...

Glaser acknowledged that the team's exclusive assessment of the psychological motivations of political conservatism might be viewed as a partisan exercise. However, he said, there is a host of information available about conservatism, but not about liberalism.

...Yet, they noted that some of these figures [Stalin, Khrushchev or Castro] might be considered politically conservative in the context of the systems that they defended. The researchers noted that Stalin, for example, was concerned about defending and preserving the existing Soviet system.

Although they concluded that conservatives are less "integratively complex" than others are, Glaser said, "it doesn't mean that they're simple-minded."

Wait, let me get this straight. They're saying that Hitler, Mussolini, Reagan, and Limbaugh are equivalent "in some form." And, they're trying to call some aspects of Stalin, Khrushchev and Castro "conservative." Apparently, they have a problem with a slippery definition of "conservatism." I wonder, was Stalin a conservative when he killed millions of people in the name of Communism?

This doesn't appear to be a joke, or just another demented posting at democraticunderground. The study itself doesn't appear to be online, but I have no doubt it exists.

Perhaps these researchers could have gone the extra step and published in, for instance, the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, calling "conservatism" a disease and suggesting that, for the betterment of the Union, they should he shipped off to gulags. Naw, that's been tried before.

Now, let's do something about this.

Here is the contact information for the researchers and their bosses:

Assistant Professor Jack Glaser of the University of California, Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy
Home page and faculty page, including email and phone. "He is a social psychologist whose primary research interest is in stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination."

The board of advisors of the School of Public Policy is here, and their Dean's page is here (email: mnacht@socrates.berkeley.edu).

Visiting Professor Frank Sulloway of UC Berkeley
Home page, includes phone
He works in Berkeley's Psychology Department; the chair of which is Karen De Valois (email: valois@socrates.berkeley.edu).

The UC Board of Regents is here. Ward Connerly can perhaps bring this issue to wider attention. Apparently an email relating to donations is givetocal@dev.urel.berkeley.edu

Associate Professor John Jost of Stanford University's Graduate School of Business
Page at Stanford, page at NYU.

Professor Arie Kruglanski of the University of Maryland at College Park
Home page
From this, the Dean of the Psychology Department's email is whall1@umd.edu. The emails of the UMD Dean are dmote@umd.edu and DMOTE@DEANS.UMD.EDU. The UMD Alumni Association is here, and the UMD College Park Foundation's pages are here and here

(Via the Angry Clam)

UPDATE: There's an informative post about this from a former sociology professor here. He's had several articles about conservatism and authoritarianism published in journals.

UPDATE 2: Per the first comment, the 7 Meg PDF file containing the study is here. From the study, here's another example of their attempt to portray Stalin as a "conservative":

The clearest example seems to be Stalin, who secretly admired Hitler and identified with several right-wing causes (including anti-Semitism). In the Soviet context, Stalin was almost certainly to the right ofhis political rivals, most notably Trotsky. In terms ofhis psychological makeup as well, Stalin appears to have had much in common with right-wing extremists.

In other words, millions didn't die in the name of True Communism.

Also, it contains this information about where the funding for this study came from:

This work first began while John T.Jost was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland at College Park, supported by National Institute of Mental Health Grant R0l-MH52578, National Science Foundation Grant SBR-9417422, and a Research Scientist Award K05-MHO 1213 to Arie W. Kruglanski. Work continued while Jack Glaser was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Personality and Social Research at the University of California, Berkeley and sponsored by National Institute of Mental Health [nimhinfo@nih.gov] Grant F32-MH12195 and while Arie W. Kruglanski (supported by National Science Foundation Grant SBR-9022192) and Frank J. Sulloway were fellows at the Center for Advanced Studies of Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. Further financial and administrative support for this project was provided by the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and the Jackson Library Document Delivery Service.

Danegeld, then and now

Then:

The Danegeld was an English tax raised to pay off Viking raiders (usually lead by the Danish king) to save the land from being ravaged by the raiders...

the amount of silver paid impressed the Danes with the idea that it was more profitable to extort payments from the English than to take whatever booty they could plunder.

Now:

Corporate benefactors lined up on the dais of the Miami Beach Convention Center last week as the NAACP's national convention wound down, toting their generosity in the form of huge checks made out to the civil rights group.

One by one, corporate spokesmen from Wal-Mart, Shell Oil, General Motors and American Airlines announced donations ranging from $100,000 to $250,000 to the tax-exempt group, whose stated goal is "to advocate civil rights of minority groups in the U.S.A."

Then the Wachovia banking corporation produced a $1 million contribution to the NAACP's education initiatives, prompting an audible gasp and a standing ovation from the audience...

NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, in his keynote speech for this year's convention, said Republicans appeal "to the dark underside of American culture, to that minority of Americans who reject democracy and equality."

Bush and Blair are liars who should stand trial for genocide

...Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair [are] "liars" who should stand trial for genocide over their invasion of Iraq earlier this year.

"They have told lies to the world. They have committed genocide, and they are criminals these two, Bush and Blair," he said.

That's a statement by Robert Mugabe, the legally elected President of Zimbabwe. Note that he's not the Selected pResident like Shrub, he was actually elected by the people. President Mugabe, who was recently actually elected to the African Union, is a true patriot who is bringing peace and freedom to his people.

In other news, President Mugabe "warned Britain and the United States that their descendants living in the country "will be the first to die" if the two countries launch an attack." And good for him!

Is there some way to get Dean to come out in support of Mugabe? Maybe Kerry (who fought in Vietnam, by the way).

"PETA RENEWS REQUEST FOR NONVIOLENT 'SAUSAGE' AFTER PIRATE ATTACK"

Comrades:

PETA has written to Milwaukee Brewers President Wendy Selig-Prieb, renewing its request that a fifth contestant be entered in Miller Park's famous "Sausage Race" in light of the recent incident in which Pittsburgh Pirate Randall Simon attacked the "Italian Sausage" with a baseball bat. Traditionally, four participants dressed to represent various meat sausages race from the outfield to home plate, and last year, PETA requested that a vegetarian "soysage" be included in the race. Now, PETA recommends that, in order to set a nonviolent example to offset the recent brawls and "beanings" in MLB, the Brewers should field a Sausage Race participant that does not represent the violence inherent in meat production, which includes castration, debeaking, dehorning, and throat-slitting. [etc. etc. etc.]

[From their letter to Selig-Prieb:]

...Miller Park already offers veggie hot dogs in the stands - in fact, PETA named Miller Park one of the Top 10 Veg-Friendly Ballparks in our annual list this year. Why allow veggie dogs into the ballpark but then exclude them from the race? Perhaps Randall Simon was simply expressing his frustration at the fact that the vegetarian hot dog was not allowed to compete. By allowing the peaceful "soysage" in the race, you could possibly avoid future player-meat confrontations...

Ha ha. Good joke! Unfortunately, even after the Arafat letter, and the Chicken Holocaust, some people still continue to not only take PETA seriously, but to cave into their demands. See "PETA-Fried":

If KFC thought that it had bought peace and security from PETA by so clearly and publicly caving in to the organization's threats and intimidation, it didn't know its enemy. I use the word enemy in its literal sense. PETA's goal is not to reform KFC's practices. It isn't ultimately seeking a universal standard for humane treatment of chickens by food producers. These goals are mere tactical efforts on the way to PETA's ultimate goal: driving KFC - and all other meat-serving fast-food restaurants - out of business.

Indeed, in a follow-up five-page "Dear Cheryl" letter, PETA's Newkirk warned darkly that the Kentucky Fried Cruelty campaign would continue more energetically than ever unless KFC agreed to the rest of PETA's demands. Not only that, Newkirk more than hinted that PETA's current demands are merely the "bare minimums" of what they will ultimately seek from KFC now that the animal liberationists believe they have gained the upper hand against the corporation. In a preview of coming attractions, Newkirk served notice that PETA will one day require that KFC's chickens be "given sunlight, fresh air, the ability to dust, bathe or raise their families - in other words to be the animals nature intended them to be" (Emphasis added)...

Sometimes laughing at a crazy person only makes matters worse

Diane Ravitch, author of the book The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn, has an article in the WSJ giving some examples of those wacky multi-culti cultists at work, and offering a solution:

A freelance writer sent me the "bias guidelines" for a major publisher of texts and tests. The "bias guidelines" consist of advice to writers and editors about words and topics that must be avoided, as well as specifications for illustrations. Like other publishers, this one requires adherence to gender and ethnic balance. All lessons, test questions, and illustrations must reflect the following ratios: 50-50 male-female; 45% Caucasian; 25% African American; 22% Hispanic American; 5% Asian American; 5% American Indian and others; and 3% "persons with disabilities." These figures do not total 100%, nor do they represent actual U.S. Census numbers, but the principle of representation is well understood by writers and editors. American society, as represented in the textbooks, is perfectly integrated by race, ethnicity, gender, age, and disability...

The specifications for photographs, I have learned, are exquisitely detailed. Men and boys must not be larger than women and girls. Asians must not appear as shorter than non-Asians. Women must wear bras, and men must not have noticeable bulges below the waist. People must wear shoes and socks, never showing bare feet or the soles of shoes, and their shoelaces must be solid black, brown, or white. People must never gesture with their fingers, nor should anyone be depicted eating with the left hand. Things to avoid: holiday decorations and scenes in which a church or a bar appears in the background...

And of one thing I am convinced: The widespread censorship of language and ideas in education caused by the demands of advocacy groups will not end unless it is regularly exposed to public review and ridicule. The next time someone in a publishing office or a state education agency suggests deleting a literary passage from a test or textbook because it contains the word "anchorman" or shows a witch flying around on a broomstick, perhaps someone in the room will say, "Wait, if we do that, people will laugh at us."

I and many others have been laughing at these assholes for years, and it hasn't done a bit of good. Like Pod People, they just keep coming and coming and self-replicating.

While millions of people joining to ridicule them would be fairly effective, the PC assholes would just circle their wagons, and their supporters would rise to their defense. Even if one set of assholes were no longer able to spew for fear of being ridiculed, another set would spring up to replace it.

Ridicule is a big step in the right direction, but it isn't enough.

The entire multi-culti cult must be completely extirpated and its fields salted. Their movement must be completely and utterly discredited. They must be declared to be delusional and treated like crazy people. Anyone who continues to support them must be marginalized and compared with them.

And, their funding must be cut. A reduction in PC university courses and programs. Schoolbooks similar to those mentioned above must be boycotted. Other economic measures must be taken to ensure that this is a most unprofitable movement. If that means giving these mental midgets make-work jobs where they can't do any harm, consider the alternative.

OK, I sound a little Coulter-esque in the foregoing. But, believe me, they'll either just brush off ridicule, or it will even make them stronger by appealing to their persecution complex and sense of utter self-righteousness.

Aloha means good riddance

Joanne Jacobs links to this article about a "Hawaiian Supremacist" professor at the University of Hawaii:

However, Professor Trasks' racial instigation is not restricted to mere verbal assaults. When asked to comment on the cancellation of the class due to threats of violence, Professor Trask responded that, its great that somebody came back at [Professor Conklin] and threatened him.[12]

Not even our Southwest separatists go this far.

All straight, white, Christian males must Unite!

Wait, you can't say that!

Who the heck are you?

I'm your PC filter.

So, why can't I say that?

Because you'll be roasted and toasted throughout the blogosphere like a "heretic... in 15th-century Spain."

Point taken. But, what if I say something like this:

Now is the time in history when Blacks and Jews, along with Latinos, Asians, Women, Gays and all others have the potential to work together. Together we can eradicate not only racism, sexism, anti-Semitism and homophobia, but also the poverty, corruption in government, destruction to our environment, corporate control, undermining of our civil liberties and a womans right to choose, and ongoing warfare that threaten us all. Now is the time to unite.

Of course, no one listens to what Babs says, but similar things are said by many other "liberals," for an example, see the end of this post. The titular phrase is nothing more than the natural corollary to the quote above. You can't spell "divisive" without the root of "divide," can you?

Jesse Jackson promises hope, growth, opportunity

I'm very surprised by this story from the Washington Post:

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - The Rev. Jesse Jackson visited the streets where rioting broke out this week, but he turned his attention across the river to the town's wealthier neighbor, St. Joseph, saying the residents of Benton Harbor should look across the river for an example of how to do things.

"Rather than attempting to shake-down corporations who are afraid of being called 'racist,' I think we should look inward, and attempt to solve our problems ourselves. Rather than trying to get money out of the guilty white residents of St. Joseph, or accusing them of conspiring against us, why don't we just get something done ourselves? There will be no more trivial law suits. There will be no more law suits based on a persecution complex.

Biblically speaking, the bible does not support socialism, and neither will I! Furthermore, I hereby denounce Bill Clinton and my role as his Spiritual Advisor," he continued.

Wait, I'm sorry, that was just the Alternate Universe Jesse Jackson. Here's the real version.

Obligatory Jayson Blair content

Historians of this blog will note that I haven't previously posted on the various NYT scandals (this doesn't count).

For my obligatory NYT-scandal content, let me direct you to this flashback from the NYT of November 12, 2002: "Colleges Find Diversity Is Not Just Numbers".

Regarding this article, this post says "It is tempting to treat this article as an unintentional parody."

The WeeklyStandard article "Dartmouth Does Diversity" says:

THE COUNTRY IS ON THE BRINK OF WAR, it faces the likelihood of another terrorist attack, and the New York Times is worried that Americans are not paying enough attention to race and gender. Two front-page articles on November 12--one on college diversity programs, the other on a golf club's all-male membership policy--offer a stunning demonstration of the loony irrelevance of Howell Raines's Times...

But this dreary monotony is just the point. The diversity industry, of which the New York Times is an integral part, perpetuates itself by constantly repackaging as new old nostrums about alleged ethnic friction and its therapeutic solution...

The college diversity scam contains four perennial features: (1) administrative deceit; (2) the pretense of acute minority and female fragility; (3) the hypocritical insistence on having it both ways; and (4) assiduous avoidance of the one true difference problem on campus...

...The second standard assumption of college diversity discourse is the psychological frailty of non-white and female students. According to the Times, an "internal" Dartmouth report (actually produced by the Committee on Institutional Diversity and Equity) found that minority students "felt damaged" by the college. Not just minority students, however. In the hyperventilating style favored by difference ideologues, the report's authors wrote that to hear from "students of color, women of all races and gay, lesbian or bisexual students who felt hurt, unvalued and ultimately less important to the mission of the college than others was searing indeed."

That "others" is particularly choice. By elimination, the only group not feeling pain at Dartmouth, it would seem, are heterosexual white males. The committee could have had the courage to name those insensate boors...

The rest of the article is pretty good as well.

Pilgrim invaders and Cranes of Color

Geez Louise:

At the meeting, the senate also voted to approve a mural to be placed in the Commons. There was some concern voiced by the senate about the contents of the mural.

"I see some pilgrim invaders here," said Elisa Haro, academic affairs director. "It kind of reminds me of my colonization, and I don't like that."

The artist of the mural said that the pilgrim invaders were meant to be Shakespearean actors and that he would try to make that more clear.

Other concerns with the mural included the depiction of white cranes, which the senate demanded be changed to color cranes.

They were also concerned with the lack of a same sex couple depicted, which the artist agreed to add. The senate voted to approve the mural in light of the adjustments being made.

This is from the University of California at Riverside.

UCR hosts El Plan de Aztlan (link on this page).

UCR is where this phrase was uttered: "We shall overcome...by the vote if possible and violence if necessary."

UCR is the home to Armando Navarro.

Diversity takes a holiday

Wouldn't it be nice if the diversity industry would take just one day off?

For instance, I did my once-a-week check of lablogs.com, and I found two posts about diversity.

The first concerns the medical school graduation at UCLA:

After the conferral of degrees and the administration of the Hippocratic Oath (which, of course, was adapted from the original to be more inclusive), the new doctors had a chance to project their diversity. One representative from each ethnic minority stood at the podium and said a few nice words in his or her native language. Swahili, German, French, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese...

...But the diversity rah-rah of the esteemed surgeon general just didn't resonate with me."

His complaint boils down not to the fact that the diversity industry might have major problems, but that his particular ethnic sub-group was not adequately represented. And, even if that were "addressed" by the diversity directorates of the land, one can imagine that there would then be the issue of, for instance, geographical representation. After having achieved a proportional number of Filipinos within the Asian-American And Pacific Islanders grouping, are too many of them from Manila and not enough from Mindanao? And, then there'd be the problem of...

The second diversity industry spotting is a bit more subtle.

A posting about the L.A. Public Library's "LA Kids Read Festival" includes the press release for the event:

Travel back to the Wild West and celebrate America's diversity at the Los Angeles Public Library's FREE L.A. Kids Read Festival on Saturday, June 7, 12 noon - 4 p.m., at the Central Library, 630 W. Fifth St., downtown Los Angeles.

Don't we celebrate America's diversity 24/7/365 around these parts? Or must even a press release about a book fair include a nod to our favorite secular god? Did the writer put that in there subconsciously, as a bit of a nervous tic?

I'm going to call the LAPL tomorrow, find out who wrote that press release, and find out.

UPDATE: Sometimes the Lonewacko gets things wrong. Like 180 degrees wrong. The author of the first link informs me:

Actually, I *was* complaining about the problems of the diversity industry, as these sentences indicate:

"It then occurred to me that this experience highlighted one of the contradictions of affirmative action....

"I raise this point because I object to the presupposition of the affirmative action policy at hand."

My point was *not* that I wanted to be adequately represented, but that the whole idea of ethnic representation was stupid to begin with. The med school graduation showed that no matter how much UC holds itself up as the paragon of diversity and bends over backwards for minorities, it still finds a way to look like a hypocrite.

Of course, I didn't want to ruin my friend's special occasion by using such words as "stupid"; I tried to maintain the solemnity of the ceremony, while criticizing its flaws.

BTW, I worked on the Prop 209 campaign and had such derogatory phrases as "white man's slaves" thrown at me, so please believe me when I say that, even as a minority, I find the diversity industry as despicable as you do.

"Seperate [sic] ceremony honors European-American graduates the night before main graduation"

Yet another article from the DailyTrojan, this one about a graduation ceremony:

On May 15, the night before USC's main commencement, a more intimate ceremony took place to celebrate the achievements of some European-American students.

More than 180 people walked at the 25th annual European-American graduation, said Cindy Schnitzel-Gruber, co-chair of the graduation planning committee. Undergraduates, graduates and doctorates all participated...

Parts of the ceremony, organized by the Indo-European Assembly, were conducted in French, German, Russian, Italian, Gaelic and Norwegian, while the rest was in English.

Joanna Hill, who received degrees in political science and sociology, was one of many students who said they preferred the European-American graduation to the main commencement ceremonies.

"All my friends are in this, and it's easier for my family to attend this one," Hill said. "This is the one that means more to me, this is the one I'm excited about."

Jessica von Stuebung, who graduated with degrees in psychology and sociology, agreed.

"It's more personal and intimate," von Stuebung said...

Before the speakers began, two dance groups, Hansa der Tanzen and Ye Beowulfen, blessed the ceremony through traditional dances.

Graduate Priscilla J. O'Reilly was selected to lead the procession and hold the Cultural Staff. The staff is covered with runes and is carried by a member of the European-American Honor Society who has demonstrated exceptional involvement and leadership, said Raquel Galliano, director of I Centro Italiano.

O'Reilly was also selected to be a speaker at the ceremony, during which she noted that just over one quarter of European-Americans graduate from college...

In addition to the ceremony for European-American students, the Asian Graduation Committee and the Center for Asian Cultural and Student Affairs held a separate graduation ceremony for Asian-American students.

The DailyTrojan's report is here, and my comments on other European-American graduation ceremonies are here.

It's important to note that "European-Americans" make up 16% of the USC student body. Apparently, there were 8000 students at the main ceremony this year. Even if just 10% of those graduates were "European-American," then the "European-American" graduation described above only attracted about 25% of USC's graduating "European-Americans."

STOP the Racist Fare Hikes!

While getting ready to take the Blue Line after doing the River Ride, I noticed the above flyer posted all over the Long Beach station. It's from the wonderful people at the Bus Rider's Union.

Apparently, later today (Thursday 5/22), the L.A. MTA will be voting to raise the price of a monthly bus pass from $42 to $52 and to eliminate $.90 tokens and paper transfers. I'm taking this information off the flyer, I don't have any more information, nor can I be bothered to look for it.

What concerns me about this flyer is the overt race-baiting. Just because a fare hike might have a disproportionate impact on Bus Riders of Color doesn't make it racist. The flyer itself implicitly says that it will affect People of Pallor as well: "A yes vote will force many Black, Latino, Asian and working class riders to choose between food, rent..."

I guess the phrase "working class" includes not just the fair number of People of Pallor who ride the bus, but also Pacific Islanders, American-Indians, Middle-Easterners, Australian Aborigines, Inuits, and all the rest. But, bringing up the subject of the People of Pallor who would be affected by the fare hike would blunt both their attempts at getting white liberal guilt and anti-white sentiment, so I guess we can see why they left it off. Viva la revolucion, comrades.

"Macy's Hit With $100M Discrimination Suit"

[UPDATE: The first link doesn't work. There are later reports here and here.]

According to this:

Sharon Simmons-Thomas, 40, said she was leaving the [a NYC Macy's store] with Christmas presents Dec. 17 when she was hauled into a detention room and accused of shoplifting by Macy's security guards because she is black.

Simmons-Thomas, a legal assistant, said she was singled out by plainclothes guards and, despite producing receipts, detained for an hour while she was searched, accused of stealing and forced to sign a confession.

At a news conference outside Macy's at Herald Square on 34th Street, Simmons-Thomas and her lawyers said they want to stop Macy's and its parent company, Federated Department Stores, from falsely accusing other black customers of shoplifting.

I'm sure she was detained by security. They might also have their side of the story concerning why she was selected. The complaint makes various allegations relating to mistreatment, and, once again, the security guards might have acted as described, or they might not have.

What makes me suspicious, however, are a few of those pesky facts things.

First, she signed a confession despite being a legal assistant, that is, in a position one would think to know better than to sign a false confession. I mean, many legal assistants know a fair bit about legal matters. Especially if she's been doing it for a while, she's probably heard what to do and what not to do. She's probably heard, typed, or read plenty of horror stories giving object lessons.

And, she just let them haul her off to a detention cell without demanding to speak to the police. In fact, after being released by store security, she passed by two NYPD officers and apparently didn't discuss what had just happened.

And, what also makes her case weak is the interminable race-baiting in the complaint:

"12. Prior to the discriminatory, humiliating and harassing conduct described below, Ms. Thomas was a loyal, long-time customer of Macys..."

Why wasn't she stopped on previous occasions, if they only selected her this time because of her race?

"Ms. Thomas walked up a set of stairs leading from The Cellar to the main shopping floor and approached one of the store exits. At that time, she was stopped by two plainclothes security guards, an Hispanic male and an Hispanic female... The security guards walked Ms. Thomas to a set of stairs to the balcony, where they were joined by another plainclothes security guard, an Hispanic male..."

But, aren't People of Color supposed to stick together? Not when they're Tools of The Man.

"37. She was falsely imprisoned in this detention area against her will for well over one hour. Throughout her false imprisonment, Ms. Thomas saw only African-American or non-white detainees or prisoners in the detention area. She never saw any white detainees or prisoners.

38. Specifically, Ms. Thomas observed that there was an African-American male and another dark-skinned male who appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent in one of the holding cells in the detention area, and that a teenage Hispanic girl was being held in another cell. There was also another African-American female prisoner who was handcuffed to a bench in the detention area."

So, in other words, Macy's needs to diversify its detention cells.

"40. Rather, the security guards stripped Ms. Thomas of all of her dignity and treated her as if she, as an African-American, had no rights that they were bound to respect..."

Wow, quite a bit of mind-reading there.

"[various threats and profanities ensued, all perpetrated by non-African-Americans] As this threat was made, five non-African-American security guards began to closely surround Ms. Thomas in an intimidating manner...

It was clear that Ramos found it hard to believe that Ms. Thomas, as an African American, could be employed at such a prestigious law firm."

Whence followed several more instances of intimidation, which were done despite knowing that she worked at a prestigious law firm. Can any group of rent-a-cops be that stupid? (The answer is probably no.)

"Rather, each one of the security guards she encountered that night, not one of whom was African-American, summarily presumed her to be guilty of shoplifting because she was black."

More excellent mind-reading.

"As she walked out of Macys, Ms. Thomas saw two uniformed NYPD officers enter the store"

Then would have been a good time to complain about what she had just supposedly gone through. Why didn't she?

The events might have happened somewhat as she described, minus the interminable race-baiting. But, one would need to hear from others of her class, and interview the 8 or more security guards involved.

I think in addition to a lawyer, she needs a shrink to help her deal with her persecution complex.

No liberal media bias here, folks

Peggy Noonan is joining MSNBC. Here's Reuter's (or perhaps the Hollywood Reporter's) report:

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - MSNBC has added another conservative commentator to its stable, hiring speechwriter-author-columnist Peggy Noonan, who also will contribute to NBC News, the news cable network said Friday.

MSNBC has moved to hire several conservative commentators in recent months...

In MSNBC's defense, Matthews is a former staffer in the Carter administration, but many critics argue that Matthews is more of a maverick middle-of-the-road pundit than a liberal.

In other words, having a network stocked with "liberals" (what the rest of us just call lefties) is the normal state of affairs. When a network hires a bunch of conservatives, it's necessary for high-minded "liberals" to come to the network's defense.

"[UK] Government lawyers say burglars 'need protection'"

From the Independent UK:

Government lawyers trying to keep the Norfolk farmer Tony Martin behind bars will tell a High Court judge tomorrow that burglars are members of the public who must be protected from violent householders.

The case could help hundreds of criminals bring claims for damages for injury suffered while committing offences...

Martin's solicitor, James Saunders, says that [the risk of Martin's use of excessive force when he is either burgled or attacked in his home] is significantly diminished since he no longer owns a gun and has agreed to fit an air-raid siren to his home that "could be heard all over the Fens".

"Persons of Pallor"

A few days ago, E. Volokh noted that he had come up with that titular phrase and had thought he was the inventor of same until checking google. Considering "people of pallor," "person of pallor," and "persons of pallor" as one, there are several mentions on web pages and on Usenet, and the first Usenet mention was in 1991. It was also mentioned in this 1994 thread featuring a future blogger.

Many of the mentions appear to be ironic, however, after reading the following interview with Donna Spencer, founding director of the Firehall Theatre Society in Vancouver [Canuckistan], a few times, I think they're both dead serious:

[Interviewer] You are of pale pallor and running a theatre with a mandate to program and support work of "multi-cultural content... Have you ever felt this was a conflict in perception, or do you feel that being on the outside, but working on the inside, has made you a more effective advocate for artists and work of diversity? Do you feel you are seen as having all "the power"?

[Spencer] ...One of the challenges I have faced as the Artistic Director/Producer at the Firehall, is how I fit into the mix. I am a person of pallor from a diverse cultural background; however, because of my pallor, I have sensed questions around my right to choose the work I choose; to direct the work I have chosen when it may be seen as ethno-specific and to function as an advocate for inclusivity in the theatre. These questions, these challenges and in some cases insults, and "bad-mouthing", have come from both sides - the culturally diverse community and the "white" mainstream community. I have been teasingly called a "wannabe" by both groups and have had my motives challenged at funding assessment committees.

Jeebus.

No matter how much you make fun of PC, it's never enough. I hearby call for a zone-flooding of "Persons of Pallor," as well as an increased usage of such terms as "[Anything and Everything] of Color:" "Blogs of Color," "Usenet Commentators of Color," "Homes of Color," whatever. Oh, wait, that last one is taken.

Maybe one of these days people like Donna will get the joke.

I coined "transnational progressivism" too

[Update: the Michael Ratner mentioned below is also trying to use the ICC "as a tool to restrain American military power" as described here and here.]

Several lefties are mad with glee over their discovery of errors in a National Review article ("Liberate the universities") about something called "transnational progressivism."

First, they say there's no such thing as a "transnational progressivism" movement. And, more importantly, they point out that the author mistakenly believes that Princeton University has a law school.

As I pointed out in the comments to the post linked above, some professors and others "[envisage] an international political monolith with which to replace America" as the article states. For an example, see the piece "Could U.N. use military force on U.S.?":

Could the U.N. use military force to prevent the United States and Britain from waging war on Iraq without a Security Council mandate?

Some anti-war groups are urging the world body to invoke a little-known convention that allows the General Assembly to step in when the Security Council is at an impasse in the face of a "threat to the peace, breach of the peace or act of aggression."

The willingness by the U.S. and Britain to go to war with Iraq without Security Council authorization is the kind of threat the U.N. had in mind when it passed Resolution 377 in 1950, said Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights, a human-rights group in New York City.

In a position paper, Ratner wrote that by invoking the resolution, called "Uniting for Peace," the "General Assembly can meet within 24 hours to consider such a matter, and can recommend collective measures to U.N. members including the use of armed forces to 'maintain or restore international peace and security.'"...

As far as the statement "Within such a regime the key political unit would not be the individual citizen who voluntarily associates with fellow citizens but the racial, ethnic, or gender group into which one is born," that should ring some bells. Multiculturalism, "corporate pluralism," etc.

Three-fifths of a job applicant

The LA Examiner reports on a new job search website from the Tribune Co. which is specifically targeting "minorities."

The press release for the new service ("ProFound") is here:

The joint effort will create a unique job recruiting resource for recruitment specialists who are seeking top caliber candidates with professional experience and diverse backgrounds. ProFound will help fulfill diversity initiatives that an increasing number of companies have implemented in order for their organizations to reflect changing demographics. The partnership aims to be the primary resource for human resource recruiters by bringing thousands of professional Hispanics and African Americans under one banner...

"Among the options available to HR recruiters are traditional job postings, resume searches utilizing ProFound's extensive database of professionals and banner advertising that targets candidates with specific qualifications."

This caused me to post the following comment:

In other words, ProFound is going to help support diversity by (presumably) only accepting applications from Job Applicants Of Color.

I wonder, do bi- or multi-racial people have an advantage when helping a corp meet its Diversity Goals? Will ProFound require a breakdown of ones ethnic components? Would someone who's, say, half-Colombian and half-Lebanese count as 1 person of each, or would each half only contribute .5 to the corresponding Diversity Goal?

(I was thinking of Shakira, as I often do, when constructing that last example.)

A couple more comments I might make include:

If someone is three-fifths black and two-fifths white, do they count as one black person towards my company's Diversity Goals?

and:

What if someone is mainly white, but has a little bit of black blood in them. Even if it's just one drop, can they count as black for our Diversity Goals?

I think I'll post cleaned-up versions of these questions to an HR board or two, and wait for the serious replies to come in.

I'll also remark that the Tribune Co. has lots of money, and lawyers like money, so...

Clamping down on cuteness

According to "Sisters Suing Southwest Over 'Racist Rhyme'":

A judge has set a trial date in a discrimination lawsuit filed against Southwest Airlines by two black passengers who were upset when a flight attendant recited a version of a rhyme with a racist history.

Grace Fuller, 48, and her sister Louis Sawyer, 46, were returning from Las Vegas two years ago when flight attendant Jennifer Cundiff, trying to get passengers to sit down, said over the intercom, "Eenie, meenie, minie, moe; pick a seat, we gotta go."

The sisters say the rhyme was directed at them and was a reference to its racist version that dates to before the civil rights era: "Eenie, meenie, minie, moe; catch a n----- by his toe."

"It was like I was too dumb to find a seat," Fuller said. Sawyer said fellow passengers snickered at the rhyme, which made her feel alienated.

Altogether now: AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

People of Color for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

According to this article:

Just when you thought the white male could stoop no lower, PETA tells us that white men don't care about animal cruelty.

No, this isn't a joke, though I thought it was when a postcard from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) making such a claim crossed my desk a few days ago. Here's how the PETA assault on white males begins: "If the idea of animals' being castrated without anesthetics on factory farms isn't at all unsettling to you, chances are you're a man and you're white..."

Here's PETA's spin on the white man's carnivorous ways: "Could it be because white men are raised on `sports' such as fishing and rodeo? Or taught to `appreciate' the outdoors with a rifle in their hands? Do they feel like they're betraying Dad if they don't give their sons hot dogs at ballgames or that they won't grow `hair on their chests' without a slab of meat on their dinner plate?

"On the other hand, could it be that people who themselves sometimes feel disenfranchised and oppressed might, for that very reason, be sympathetic to the plight of animals?"

Racist? Check. Wouldn't dare say such things about non-white males? Check. Time to look up the emails of publicists who represent celebrities who support PETA? Check.

"No deals with the White Man"

On tonight's edition of KCET's Life & Times program, co-host Jess Marlow referred to an upcoming story about the Pechanga Indians (owners of a casino in Temecula) with something similar to, "They're succeeding by not making deals with the White Man."

Shortly after that, when introducing the segment, Val Zavala said something similar to "They're succeeding by not making deals with the White Man."

Then, at the beginning of his report, Life & Times correspondent Philip Bruce said something similar to "They're succeeding by not making deals with the White Man."

Lord knows, we white men have a bit of a tragic history with most Indian tribes. But, do we really need a borderline racist tagline like that, especially when the report in question had very little discussion of who the Pechangas are dealing with?

If the Pechangas are successfully running their casino without outside help, that's one thing. If other Indian tribes have had problems running casinos with outside companies, tell us about it. But if the Pechangas are illegally discriminating against people based on race or national origin, hopefully KCET will run another report to discuss that.

Say it with statistics!

Orange County's CalPundit links to an LAT story about the LAPD's racial profiling statistics.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics. L.A. is a huge city, not just in terms of population but size as well. It can take over an hour to get from, say, Chatsworth to Harbor City, even at 4am. Both of those are in L.A. City proper, they aren't independent cities.

These statistics mix together stops of gang-bangers driving lowriders in South Central and East L.A. with stops of meth-types driving in the Valley with stops of middle-class families in West L.A.

A more honest treatment would consider not just the race of those involved, but several other factors, such as the year/make/model/condition of their car, their age and assumed socioeconomic status, how many other people there were in the car and their age and socioeconomic status, what part of the city they were in, what time of day it was, and what was the reason for the stop (weaving or no plates, or just a broken tail light).

One of the reasons I started this blog was because of a disconcerting run-in with the LAPD. I'm no apologist, but I think that when analyzing these statistics, all of the factors involved in who they decide to stop and who they decide to search have to be taken into account. It'd be good if that analysis were done from a non-PC standpoint, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

On a related note, remember CA State Sen. Kevin Murray? You know, sponsor of a "driving while black" bill (later changed to "driving while black or brown", and then later changed to "driving while being anything but a member of the white devil oppressors"). Remember how he was caught getting a BJ in his state-owned car, and that was hushed up?

That's quite an accomplishment for a Student of Color!

I've been attempting to help the Atriosians dilute their KoolAid a tad by posting a bit in their comments section. Why, even Atrios himself has put my name on his page a couple times. Of course, it's real cute that he spells Lonewacko wrong and doesn't include a link.

One of the things I and my new friends were discussing is Ward Connerly and academia.

For instance, did you know that several universities hold separate graduation ceremonies for people of various ethnic and sexual groups? UCLA alone has separate graduations for "Latinos" (read: Chicanos), Filipinos, Asian Pacific Islanders, African-Americans, Iranians, American Indians, and Gays. It's like a census form come to life!

Actually, the Gay version, named the Lavender Graduation, in a munificent example of inclusion, encompasses lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and same-gender-loving students.

UCLA's "Latino" graduation is organized by the separatist organization Mecha, and has been going on for 25 years. And, other universities throughout the U.S. have been holding separate graduation ceremonies for blacks for the past few years. A poster at Atrios' site says:

The ancillary recognitions at graduation time were started as a way to increase the comfort level of some minority students and parents. A disproportionate number of minority students are the first to finish college in their families. Their parents, family and friends might feel less overwhelmed than at the larger ceremony. Also, the specialness of the students' achievement is recognized at the luncheons or dinners.

Well, while I haven't attended any of these wee little kaffeeklatschen yet, I get the feeling that, especially with a budget of tens of thousands of dollars, these aren't just little get-togethers, they're full blown ceremonies, paid for with taxpayer money. And, I don't think white people, or other Peoples Not In The Set of Peoples Of Color Or Other Oppressed Minorities would be allowed to hold their own ceremony. Here's my follow-up to "Mac Diva":

Look, MD, all I'm asking for is a fair shake. Many white people aren't "comfortable" around Peoples of Color. I'm just trying to increase their comfort level, and help them recognize the specialness of the event. That's all. They might feel a little "overwhelmed" when surrounded by all the peoples of other hues.

This is all old news to the blog-o-sphere, of course. Others have already raised the same points as I have, as pointed out in this article:

Predictably, white students have protested the event as separatist. As one wrote in a letter to the[Michigan State University] student paper, "What would happen if some students tried to organize an all-white graduation? All hell would break loose. They would be labeled bigots." Just as predictably, MSU is countering such criticisms with thinly veiled accusations of racism: "The response of critics is indicative of white privilege, because they don't really understand why this is a significant accomplishment for black students," said Nikki O'Brien, MSU's coordinator for African-American Affairs...

Events at MSU are following what is by now a set choreography of rhetorical and institutional moves. Black Celebratory will happen; campus conservatives will mock it as separatist and campus radicals will call the conservatives racist. Meanwhile, the administration gets to have it both ways: in supporting the Black Celebratory, MSU both demonstrates its enlightened understanding of the special needs of minorities while at the same time suggesting that without special programs and special events and special congratulation--without the institutionalized pity exemplified by comments like June's--minorities would never get anywhere at all.

Another interesting article is "Color-coded diversity":

Michael Meyers, executive director of the New York Civil Rights Coalition, a former official of the NAACP, calls these practices of separation a "ghettoisation" of those campuses in the name of "diversity."

This article has more. Here's a letter from a student. This article includes Mecha quotes. It closes with this (somewhat) hopeful statistic:

In 1997, for instance, about 300 students participated in the La Raza Graduation attracted, but according to University statistics, a total of 855 Hispanics graduated. And while Natalie Stites estimated that a majority of American Indian students participated, a similar pattern of low participation emerged with other ethnic graduations. 170 students participated in the 1997 ceremony for Asian students, for instance, while 1,874 Asians got their degrees.

This is a good, longer treatment. Here's a 1998 interview with Ward Connerly. And, this Michelle Malkin article touches on broader questions.

In closing, I'll leave you with this article from the other side. Scroll down to the "Ethnic Studies Under Attack in California" section. The page itself is named "black power revival," and the article contains so many misstatements and emotionally-charged adjectives that I'm surprised it doesn't use words like Whitey. Examples: "oppressed groups," "so-called Ethnic Studies programs," "racial pride, which he feels has no place in public universities," "encourage the admission of Africans and other traditionally oppressed nationalities," "tremendous drop in freshman enrollment of Africans, Hispanics and Native Americans," etc. etc.

How's this for condescending?

Check out this babe. Now compare her text with that of, say, Victoria, or, better yet, Lori, who also is of working-class origins.

Frankly, while Susan's pretty hot, if I had to choose and I had lotsa money, this might be another option.

I found out about this wonderful talent search from this via this.

England, home of Orwell

The London cops are cracking down on hate crimes. Their campaign includes a set of posters just screaming at the top of their lungs for parody; my first attempt, achieved only with paint.exe, is available to the right.

Maybe this is all part of a campaign to make getting rid of their militant Islamists seem like part of a larger push against hate crimes, but I doubt it.

UPDATE: There's a longer analysis here.

When is a hate crime not a hate crime?

Apparently everyone except D.A. Steve Cooley thinks the West Hollywood beatings were anti-gay hate crimes.

According the D.A.'s own release, "Statement indicate the suspects wanted to 'rob rich white people'"

As in, "rob rich white people."

Why didn't they just say they wanted to rob "rich people?" Would they have tried to rob, say, Shaquille O'Neal, or would they have given him a free pass? Even if for some reason unknown to anyone else Cooley can't get them on anti gay hate crime, it would seem like he could get them on an anti-white hate crime. Except, I guess wanting to rob white people isn't a hate crime.

Ron Fineman makes the same point. I'm linking to him even though he won't link to my Newsbabes page. See, unlike me he's a serious journalist.
