Prop. 200 vs. the elites

Prop. 200 vs. the elites is discussed in "Arizona Calling: The brewing immigration backlash" and "Fighting back".

Comments

The opposition to Prop 200 keep saying that
1. Illegals aren't trying to vote.
2. Illegals are just here to work, not get on welfare
3. This law won't make a difference or stop illegal aliens from crossing the border.

So if they are right then what is the big deal, it won't affect anyone then right? None of the illegals would face deportation because they aren't trying to vote, or they aren't signing up for welfare benefits. The arguement that it won't stop illegals from crossing the border might be true but it will make AZ less appealling than other states who will provide services to illegals and this might make the illegal population in AZ to decline. State social service workers will be forced to do their jobs and investigate the entitement rights of people applying for benefits that the citizens of AZ have to pay for. These people are entrusted with the taxpayer's money and should be held responsible if they are negligent.

This, as well as semi-related issues having to do with the OUSD school board election, illustrate the tensions of a republic. At what point do our elected representatives follow the will of the majority, and at what point do they not do so? And, if a republic is governed by the rule of law, what happens when the existing laws are not enforced?

They're quite right that the people have spoken overwhelmingly on this issue of nurturing illegal immigration. The only problem is that officials aren't about to give up their best chance of destroying the country, and fishing dictatorship out of the smoking ruins of it. Now that Kerry is presumably off the stage, Bush must be walloped with inquiries as to whether he is not in gross violation of the legal requirement to register as a foreign agent of Mexico. Likewise, his cabinet officers, who just went down to the place where organized crime-family values don't stop at the Rio Grande. They must be asked to register as foreign agents of Mexico, if they obediently serve the policies of that country to the detriment of our national interest.
